Chapter 28: Our Silence is Truly Too Strong
Chapter 28: Our Silence is Truly Too Strong
At Kaiba Land, a venue designed in the shape of a white dragon, countless small mirror panels were pieced together to form a dragon scale-like structure, reflecting a colorful light. Outside the venue, people came and went, the atmosphere was lively yet tense.
This was the site of the Duel Academy's annual practical admissions assessment.
The student exams were divided into written and practical tests. Only those who passed the written test would be eligible for the practical assessment. Furthermore, the practical exam admission numbers were assigned based on the ranking in the written test, and the corresponding assessment difficulty was determined by the written test scores.
The final admission decision was based on a composite score from the written and practical exams. Duel Academy adhered to an elite education system, emphasizing strength in all aspects of life and learning. Upon enrollment, students were assigned dormitories based on their academic performance. Aside from luxurious hardware facilities, the superior students also enjoyed superior dining and services that underachievers could not compare to.
Of course, there were also differences in credit rewards, priorities for purchasing rare cards, and discount rates, among other things.
The academy's dormitories were divided into three tiers, each named after the legendary Three Egyptian God Cards at the pinnacle of Duel Monsters. The highest-ranked dormitory was called "Obelisk Blue," followed by "Ra Yellow," and the lowest-ranked, which was looked down upon by the entire academy, was "Osiris Red."
However, every time he saw this setting, You Xuan felt that there was definitely some underhanded business involved on the part of Kaiba Seto, the founder and chairman of the academy.
In the Duel City arc, Obelisk was the Egyptian God Card used by Kaiba himself, while Osiris was the one possessed by his rival, Atem.
So, one could imagine that when Chairman Kaiba was making the dormitory assignments, he must have been gritting his teeth in rage: "Damn you, Yugi! After beating me, you just ran off without a word.
I'll get my revenge by placing Yugi's dormitory, no, the Osiris dormitory, at the bottom of the hierarchy!!!"
Lackey: "Yes, Chairman!"
". . ."
The written test results had been announced the day before. As expected, You Xuan had secured the top spot relatively comfortably, earning him the admission number 001.
Holding this admission ticket, You Xuan recalled something.
He remembered that in the original TV series, there was a character who was supposed to be the top-ranked student. Had he taken that character's place?
Was it Four-Piece Puzzle? Or maybe Six-Ryo Sakura? Oh, now he remembered—it was Daichi Misawa. But it didn't really matter. As far as he could recall, that character was just a high-achieving extra with zero impact on the plot. Of course, at least he hadn't dragged Judai down like some of the other teammates in GX who were constantly slacking off.
You Xuan proceeded to the exam venue entrance. All candidates were required to complete the registration process before entering the exam site.
Seated at the entrance was one of the teachers of Duel Academy, Nurse Ayukawa Emi. She wore an Obelisk Blue jacket and a short skirt, her white legs crossing and pressing against each other, exuding a sense of fullness.
She belonged to the category of characters that, when you try to reminisce about your childhood, surprise you with the realization of "Wow, she was actually quite well-endowed," and leave you wondering, "Why did I only focus on the card games back then?"—a true D-tier powerhouse.
However, You Xuan's heart remained unmoved, for his mind was fully occupied with thoughts of which deck to use in the exam, its configuration, and his dueling strategy.
Dedicated duelists are always single-minded. Only by emptying one's mind can one be fearless, and only by having cards in one's heart can one achieve unity with them.
"Name?"
"Yuki Judai."
"Admittance number?"
"001."
"Great! Now, please register your usual deck." Teacher Emi requested amicably.
She had volunteered for this registration duty out of curiosity to see what the incoming freshmen looked like. And this year's top student was already making a good impression. Not only was he academically excellent, but he also had a pleasant appearance and seemed polite and elegant, likely a sunny young man.
"I need to register my deck, too?" This was something You Xuan hadn't expected.
In this world, duelists seemed to have their signature decks, along with symbolic ace monsters. However, You Xuan had been varying his deck to prevent others from studying and countering his strategies. He had planned to observe the examiners' decks first and then decide on his own configuration.
He wondered if registering his deck here meant he wouldn't be able to change it later.
"Are you okay, young man?" Teacher Emi tilted her head in confusion.
Anyone who had made it to the Duel Academy was already an accomplished duelist. Why would they need to think about their deck now?
She paused to consider and then kindly explained, "Oh, this isn't a strict review. It's just a simple registration. Many students may not have a clear series or theme to their decks, so you can register based on the races, attributes, or tactics you commonly use."
You Xuan thought for a moment.
"Hmm, then my usual cards would be Magic Cards, Trap Cards, Magic-User Tribe, Warrior Tribe, and Machine Tribe as external support."
Teacher Emi: "?"
Are you sure that's what you call a deck?
"Hahaha, what a joker you are." Teacher Emi laughed dryly, "Some students may have more eclectic decks. So, feel free to tell me about your trump card or your favorite card."
You Xuan fell into deep thought.
While he switched up his monster cards, certain elements remained constant across all configurations: the versatile Red Pit, interrupting his opponent's resistance, and the violent Filter Draw that earned him cards.
With this in mind, he silently pulled out a Pot of Greed and then abruptly stopped.
He had sensed an ominous aura, and when he glanced sideways, he was startled to see the usually reclusive Shy Magician, Silent Magician, floating beside him in a spectral form that only he could see, silently standing there with a plaintive look in her eyes as if accusing him of not loving her the most.
Without making a sound or moving, her mournful gaze spoke volumes.
You Xuan took a deep breath, driven by a mysterious will to survive. He quickly put the Pot of Greed back and pulled out the Silent Magician instead.
"You have the Silent Magician?!?" Teacher Emi exclaimed in shock, "That super-rare card used by the Duel King, Yugi Muto?"
The teacher's respect for him grew even more.
After completing the registration, You Xuan felt a weight lift from his shoulders. When he turned around, the spectral figure had vanished.
He breathed a sigh of relief.
That was close, but thankfully, his quick thinking had averted disaster.
Perhaps this would also deepen his bond with his sprite?
Ya☆su☆ro (Excellent).
While he might not need to use the real Silent Magician in this exam, it wasn't a big deal.
The real Silent Magician was so powerful that it could win duels without even making an appearance. His Silent Magician deck was truly formidable.
