Chapter 28: Li Xinhuan, with Many Enemies
Chapter 28: Li Xinhuan, with Many Enemies
"The poison is in the oil!" Tian Qi said.
You Longsheng replied nonchalantly, "Why don't you try eating some of that white rice then?"
Tian Qi remained silent, his eyes scanning the room until they landed on the wooden bucket used for steaming rice. He opened it and, with a scoop of the ladle, revealed a black spider the size of a fist.
"A double insurance," You Longsheng marveled. "Impressive. Impressive indeed." This black spider was not mentioned in the original story.
"Amituofo!"
Without another word, Master Xinmei placed the bowl of porridge he was holding onto the table in the kitchen.
You Longsheng glanced at him sideways. He couldn't very well say that the porridge was actually fine, as it had been certified safe in the original story.
"Who is this person, to be so malicious?" Tian Qi demanded angrily.
Li Xinhuan sighed. "I knew he would come sooner or later."
Tian Qi turned abruptly, "You know who poisoned the food?"
You Longsheng shrugged. "It seems to be one of Li Xinhuan's many enemies."
You Longsheng looked at Master Xinmei and the others and said sarcastically, "Look at the kind of people who are Li Xinhuan's enemies, and how formidable they are. No wonder Li Xinhuan said he has few friends. I guess they've all been dragged down by him."
Li Xinhuan was about to speak when he was almost choked, "None of my friends have been killed by my enemies!"
"If you say so," You Longsheng continued, "Stop wasting time. Who is this uninvited guest?"
You Longsheng asked, "Even if we die, let us die knowing the truth. Otherwise, when Yanluo Wang asks, we won't even know how we died, and we won't be able to find the culprit to seek justice. How humiliating."
Duan Qian and Feng Wan exchanged glances, feeling that the recent behavior of the lord of the village was like that of a different person. The way he spoke was simply infuriating.
Li Xinhuan said helplessly, "The poisons in this world can be roughly divided into two types: plant poisons and animal poisons. There are many people who can refine poison from plants, but fewer who can extract poison from snakes and insects. Even fewer are those who can kill with snakes and insects without a trace, and there are only a handful of such people under the heavens."
Tian Qi's pupils contracted, and he exclaimed, "Are you talking about the Five Poison Boy from the Extreme Joy Cave in Miaojiang?"
Li Xinhuan sighed, "I wish it wasn't him."
Tian Qi asked, "How did he come to the Central Plains? What is he doing here?"
Li Xinhuan replied calmly, "Just as Brother You said, he's here for me."
Tian Qi's face turned ugly, "You really have a lot of enemies."
You Longsheng nodded, "Enemies like Ru Yi and the Five Poison Boy. If I had just one of them, I wouldn't be able to sleep. But Li Xinhuan can still eat, drink, and sleep soundly even after being acupunctured. It seems he really is..."
Duan Qian continued, "...incredibly formidable."
You Longsheng shook his head, "He's just reckless."
Everyone: "..."
Li Xinhuan sighed and explained, "I haven't been enemies with him for long. It was just the other day when I entered the pass and killed his four disciples."
The four disciples in red, yellow, black, and green actually died at Ah Fei's hands, but Ah Fei was avenging Li Xinhuan, and the news that spread later was that those who were with Ah Fei, like Cha Meng, were going to deal with Li Xinhuan. So it was understandable that the Five Poison Boy mistook Li Xinhuan for the killer of the four disciples and came to take revenge.
You Longsheng gave a thumbs up, "The way you use the word 'only' is really spirited. Don't you think the phrase 'reckless' suits you perfectly?"
Tian Qi didn't want to talk to Li Xinhuan, and now Li Xinhuan didn't want to talk to You Longsheng either.
But You Longsheng continued to talk to himself, "However, although the Five Poison Boy is good at using poison, his martial arts skills are not that high. At least we can sleep soundly tonight without worrying too much."
...
The next day, as they set off again, You Longsheng retrieved scorched pancakes and dried beef jerky from a large bag in the carriage.
Tian Qi's eyes widened at the sight of the two large bags of food. "Is this what you call our lifeline?"
You Longsheng retorted, "And why wouldn't this be our lifeline?"
Li Xinhuan joined in with a hearty laugh, clapping his hands. "Of course, it's a lifeline to have an abundance of pancakes and beef appear out of thin air when we're starving."
Tian Qi turned to You Longsheng. "How did you know we'd encounter the Five Poison Boy on our journey?"
"I didn't," You Longsheng replied.
"Then why did you bring the pancakes and beef?" Tian Qi pressed.
"Have you never heard of being prepared for any eventuality?" You Longsheng countered, rolling his eyes. "Do you think I bring Duan Qian and Feng Wan along on my travels just to keep me company during meals?"
Tian Qi was left speechless.
Duan Qian and Feng Wan exchanged a glance and wisely decided to remain silent. They certainly weren't going to mention that when traveling with You Longsheng in the past, they rarely carried food that was convenient for storage.
Regardless of whether Tian Qi still had his suspicions, the four monks from Damo Court now regarded You Longsheng with newfound admiration. After all, he had saved their lives by preventing them from eating the poisoned food the previous day.
So, they drank water from the river and ate the pancakes and beef that You Longsheng had brought, traveling for three days without incident.
Along the way, Tian Qi grew tired of eating pancakes and began to crave a change in taste, as he found the river water dirty.
However, everything he tried—from buns bought from the carriage driver to random purchases of steamed cakes on the street, and even wine from a peddler selling liquor in a basket—was poisoned!
Tian Qi was stunned. "Is he a worm in our stomachs? How does he know what we're going to buy?"
As they traveled through the town, Tian Qi couldn't help but lift the carriage curtain to search for the Five Poison Boy, wondering if he was following them and poisoning whatever they bought.
"There's no need to look," Li Xinhuan said. "Although the Five Poison Boy is famous, no one has ever seen his true face. He's either extremely skilled at hiding or a master of disguise."
"But we'll see his true face soon enough," You Longsheng added.
"Why?" Tian Qi asked.
"Because we're approaching Shaolin," You Longsheng explained. "Do you think the Five Poison Boy would dare follow us there?"
Before Xinmei could respond, Tian Qi answered confidently, "Of course not."
In the world of Gu Long's novels, Shaolin Temple didn't stand out much, but that didn't mean it lacked strength.
As a millennium-old temple and a pillar of the martial arts world, if it weren't powerful, it would have been destroyed countless times by now!
Although Yi Kui was arrogant and unruly, and could hold his own against Xinmei or Xinshu in a one-on-one fight, even daring to mock them, he would never dare intrude upon Shaolin.
The same went for the Five Poison Boy.
Shaoshi Mountain was filled with monks, leaving no room for him to disguise himself or hide. Moreover, the Shaolin monks had their own methods to counteract poison, so if he ventured there, it would be like a meat bun hitting a dog—a one-way trip.
"Li Tanzhua is currently powerless to fight back, and these two days before he reaches Shaolin are the Five Poison Boy's last chance," You Longsheng explained. "If he still seeks revenge, he won't be able to resist taking action during these final days."
As his words fell, the short, sharp sound of a bamboo flute could be heard outside the carriage.
