Chapter 28: "Fishing" Upgrade
Chapter 28: "Fishing" Upgrade
As the waves crashed onto the shore, a two-meter-long and one-meter-wide Abyssal Tide Worm emerged from the sand.
This Tide Worm was covered in a hard shell, a deep brown hue with dark purple patterns, and had over a dozen insect-like legs beneath it. Its head featured a terrifying maw, making it a truly horrifying sight.
The Tide Worm's shell was incredibly tough, impervious to sword strikes, making it one of the most well-defended lower-tier Abyssal Monstrosities.
This Tide Worm crawled onto the shore, following the scent of blood, and swallowed a rat on the beach, slowly chewing it in its stomach.
Upon seeing this creature, Su Mu Yu tensed up and instinctively gripped Lu Heng's wrist tightly.
Lu Heng pulled her up and took out a crossbow, placing it in her hand, "Here! Aim at it and try shooting an arrow."
This crossbow, prepared earlier, had impressive power, capable of piercing a 3-centimeter thick wooden board within a 20-meter range.
Su Mu Yu held the crossbow, aiming at the Tide Worm, but as she had never used such a weapon, her aim was a bit shaky.
"Don't be nervous, aim for its eyes and shoot," Lu Heng supported her arm, teaching her how to aim.
As Su Mu Yu aimed, she asked, "After hitting it, will it run away? It's not easy to lure it to the shore."
The two waited under the shade of a tree for nearly an hour before they managed to lure a single Tide Worm. It would be a pity if it escaped.
"No, this thing is bloodthirsty. When it sees food, it won't run," Lu Heng was very familiar with the Tide Worm's behavior.
"Seeing food?" Su Mu Yu was a bit puzzled, looking around. Apart from a few bags of bread in her backpack, she had no other food.
Soon, she realized something, looking at herself and then at Lu Heng.
Lu Heng nodded and smiled, "Yes, it's us."
As Su Mu Yu aimed, she controlled the Recon Eagle to get a closer look, "The demon energy on this Tide Worm seems quite strong. What level is it?"
Lu Heng observed its size and replied, "Around level 8."
Most Abyssal Monstrosities' levels and sizes were proportional, and experienced Metahumans could judge their level by their size.
"Then I'll shoot."
"Mhm," Lu Heng nodded.
Su Mu Yu took a deep breath, steadied her aim, and pulled the trigger.
Bang! Swoosh!
The crossbow bolt shot out, embedding itself with a "ding" into the shell on one side of the Tide Worm's head.
Hiss!
The Tide Worm discovered its prey and let out a sharp hiss, moving its dozen chest legs to charge forward.
"You retreat first."
Lu Heng ordered Su Mu Yu to fall back and then grabbed a glass bottle filled with gasoline, throwing it at the Tide Worm.
Clang!
The glass bottle smashed onto the Tide Worm, shattering and dousing half of its body with gasoline.
Immediately, Lu Heng sparked a fire, igniting the gasoline, and then backed off, maintaining a 5-meter distance, leading the Tide Worm on a walk along the beach.
Flames engulfed the Tide Worm, causing its shell to sizzle.
It hissed angrily and pursued Lu Heng, but no matter how it chased, Lu Heng always kept the 5-meter distance, like flying a kite, leading it in circles on the beach.
After chasing for a few hundred meters, the Tide Worm's shell turned red-hot, and the high temperature began to damage its body beneath the shell.
Angrily, it opened its mouth and spat a glob of mucus at Lu Heng.
This mucus was corrosive, and once it stuck, it was difficult to wash off.
If a Metahuman was hit, they would be in serious trouble even if they survived.
Lu Heng was familiar with the Tide Worm's attack methods, and by maintaining the 5-meter distance, he was waiting for this moment.
The Tide Worm's mucus attack range was exactly 5 meters.
Lu Heng had been staying at the limit of the mucus attack range, and with his preparation, he easily dodged it with a swift step.
The Tide Worm's mucus attack missed, and the flames on its body had turned its shell red.
It hissed angrily, no longer pursuing Lu Heng, and turned to escape into the sea.
Lu Heng let it flee towards the ocean without trying to stop it. Instead, he waited for it to dive into the seawater.
A wave crashed onto the Tide Worm.
The red-hot shell suddenly came into contact with seawater, emitting a "sizzling" sound.
Due to thermal expansion and contraction, the Tide Worm's shell cracked open.
Lu Heng immediately chased it, drew his sword, and executed the "Moon Pursuit" technique, stabbing into its vital spot through the cracked shell.
Roar! The Abyssal Tide Worm let out a mournful cry, collapsing onto the waves.
[Hunt the Abyssal Tide Worm, absorb 40 points of Demon Energy.]
Lu Heng turned to look at the shore and asked, "Did you absorb the Demon Energy?"
Su Muyu emerged from her invisible state, nodding excitedly, "Yes, and I've leveled up. I'm already at level 7."
When at lower levels, the leveling speed is faster, so her level gradually caught up.
Lu Heng used his sword to pry open the Tide Worm's head shell, extracting a Demon Crystal Core.
[Corrosive Mucus Crystal Core]
[Corrosive Mucus: Secretes corrosive mucus with corrosive effects on various materials like metal and organic substances. Skill Consumption: 30 points of Demon Energy per kilogram. Skill Level: D-rank.]
Lu Heng handed the Skill Crystal Core to Su Muyu, smiling as he asked, "Do you want to learn it?"
After reading the skill's effect, Su Muyu's face showed resistance, shaking her head like a rattle, "No."
The skill's effect was actually quite good, but secreting corrosive mucus was indeed something many couldn't accept.
Of course, there are those with peculiar tastes who might enjoy such an unusual skill.
Lu Heng's face broke into a mischievous smile as he passed the Crystal Core, chuckling, "As we agreed, you have to obey me unconditionally."
Su Muyu's eyes widened in shock, and she turned to run, "I don't want to, you can't do this."
"I was just joking, don't run," Lu Heng waved, calling her back.
Next.
The two continued to sit under the shade, "fishing," waiting for the "fish" to take the bait.
"I didn't realize hunting Abyssal Tide Worms could be this easy. Next time, we'll bring a mat, set up some snacks, and wait while having a picnic." Su Muyu rested her chin on her hand, gazing at the azure seawater and the clear blue sky.
Who would've thought that beneath such a beautiful scenery, a massive crisis lurked.
Lu Heng shook his head and chuckled, "Wait until thousands of Abyssal Tide Worms crawl ashore, then see if you can still be so relaxed."
Su Muyu glared, "By then, I'll definitely turn and run. I don't think the Abyssal Tide Worms have the ability to sense invisibility, right?"
"They don't, but they can track scents." Lu Heng spread his hands.
"That's a bit troublesome. [Invisible Veil] only has optical invisibility, which is a bit of a pity." Su Muyu began to realize the skill's shortcomings.
"Don't worry, after the skill levels up, new functions will appear." Lu Heng explained briefly.
"Then I need to practice the skill proficiency quickly." Su Muyu nodded seriously.
