Chapter 279: The Carmen Mahjong in the Basement (First Update)
Chapter 279: The Carmen Mahjong in the Basement (First Update)
Thursday, November 1, 2012.
Today is Halloween, and Aisha's middle school dismissed early, before three in the afternoon.
Although Halloween isn't a public holiday, it is well-known, and most schools are considerate enough to let students off early so they can celebrate at home.
So, Aisha was one of the first to return to the villa.
Teacher Berry had some school business today and would probably be back later. Her father, Has, would arrive home around seven or eight, as usual.
Her beloved brother, Jerry, had come home the previous night to prepare a feast, celebrating the arrival of Halloween. So, he wouldn't be coming back tonight.
After returning to the villa, Aisha turned on the TV and grabbed a large bag of snacks her brother had given her, starting to munch away.
In the past, her brother had been quite strict about her eating snacks, saying that many of them were unhealthy and could affect her growth if she ate too much.
But for some reason, every time he came home now, he would bring her a big bag of snacks and no longer restrict her from eating them.
He even told her to finish the snacks within a week, and if she couldn't, to throw them away.
Despite this, she always felt like she couldn't get enough of the snacks her brother brought.
As she turned on the TV, a bright smile appeared on her face when she saw "Cinderella 3: Time Magic." However, after a moment of hesitation, she pressed the remote and switched to a popular dance competition show.
During class today, she had heard a few classmates talking about this show, and she wanted to watch it so she could join in the conversation next time.
However, just as she started watching, she heard a strange sound coming from the first floor.
"Is there a burglar?"
Aisha quickly ran to Has's room, grabbed the Pillar of Judgment sword from his cabinet, and carefully made her way downstairs.
Jerry, who was invisibly floating in mid-air, couldn't help but sigh. His sister wasn't as quirky as before, but her temper hadn't changed a bit. She was still quite bold.
If it really was a burglar, her small frame going downstairs would be like offering herself up.
However, it was precisely because he understood Aisha's temper that he felt she needed more protection.
Has and Teacher Berry were adults who could make rational decisions in dangerous situations. They also had a house-elf who could use Phantom Shift to escape danger, and the Mini Cooper for additional protection. They were fine.
Aisha, on the other hand, was still young and not very level-headed. He was afraid that if danger came, the house-elf wouldn't have time to use Phantom Shift, and she would put herself in harm's way.
As for whether Aisha might do something wrong after receiving his Carmen Cards due to her immature mind, Jerry was confident that wouldn't happen.
He knew Aisha. Although she was bold, she had a kind and just heart.
Besides, with the Azure Dragon watching over her, nothing bad would happen.
Aisha carefully made her way downstairs. After a thorough search, she found no burglar but followed the sound to the villa's basement library.
The basement library had been there when they moved in, with several bookshelves filled with hundreds of books, left by the previous owner.
Since the villa was large and the basement wasn't used much, Has and Belle hadn't bothered to have the books cleared out.
“What’s glowing?”
As soon as Aisha entered the basement library, a blinding light flashed before her eyes.
Upon closer inspection, the source of the light turned out to be a book.
The Carmen
Curious, she reached out and pulled the glowing, peculiar book from the shelf.
The cover featured a pattern of an Azure Dragon bound by chains, with the English name "Carmen" inscribed on it, the same surname as her brother.
Snap!
Just as Aisha was wondering why a book would glow, thinking it might be covered in fluorescent powder, the book’s clasp suddenly popped open, startling her.
Opening the book, she found a card slot inside, containing twenty small, thumb-sized blocks.
“What’s this?”
Aisha picked up one of the blocks. Its front was a light blue, and the cover depicted a woman with closed eyes. Above the woman’s head was a dragon head pattern, containing a Chinese character she didn’t recognize. Below the woman’s feet was the English word "The Windy."
“Wind?”
Aisha read aloud.
As soon as she spoke, a sudden gust of wind appeared out of nowhere in the basement library, blowing all the books off the shelves and causing her to scream in fright.
“Seal!”
At that moment, an elderly voice suddenly emanated from the book in her hands, and the wind subsided.
Before Aisha could figure out what was happening, a small azure dragon flew out of the book and slowly opened its eyes to look at her.
“Little girl, each Carmen Mahjong tile possesses immense magic power and should not be used carelessly, or it could cause trouble. Also, thank you for waking me up!
I am the guardian beast of the Carmen Mahjong, the Azure Dragon of the Four Celestial Beasts!”
“Carmen Mahjong? The Sealed Beast Azure Dragon?”
Aisha blinked, completely stunned.
Meanwhile, Jerry was floating in mid-air, watching the scene below and struggling to suppress his laughter.
Clow Reed used fifty-four types of magic to create fifty-four Clow Cards, the same number as a standard deck of playing cards.
He had planned to use one hundred and eight types of magic to create one hundred and eight cards, but then he realized that no deck of cards had one hundred and eight cards, not even two decks for a game of Dou Dizhu.
So, he had a brilliant idea and changed the cards to mahjong tiles, as a standard mahjong set has exactly one hundred and eight tiles.
The medium didn’t matter much; whether it was cards or tiles, it wouldn’t affect the power of the magic.
Of course, part of it was his mischief.
After all, he was now using this method to give the twenty completed mahjong tiles and the guardian beast Azure Dragon to Aisha, one of his mischievous acts as a brother.
However, in just three short days, he had only managed to create twenty tiles.
Of Clow Reed’s fifty-four Magic Cards, he had studied twenty-one, including all but the Time Card. He had thoroughly understood the twenty others and quickly replicated and created them.
With the fifty-four Clow Cards, he had a template, so as long as he could understand the magic principles, replicating them wasn’t too difficult.
The real challenge was creating the remaining fifty-four new tiles, or new mahjong tiles, on his own.
But for now, these twenty tiles and the guardian beast Azure Dragon should be enough to handle most situations.
He couldn’t wait to see his sister’s reaction when she found out she would become a Magic User!
