Chapter 279: Lookout City
Chapter 279: Lookout City
If this were a legendary tale, Lindsey's journey across the world would certainly warrant some attention.
But the truth is...
Even though Lindsey had achieved the miracle of slaying the Dragon Beast, as he approached Lookout City with Hanske's guidance, a significant problem awaited him—money.
Lindsey examined his travel bag.
Rough copper coins, 127 in total, and two rough silver coins.
One silver coin could be exchanged for twenty copper coins, and the value could vary drastically depending on the region and social circumstances.
If he were to convert it...
One copper coin could buy a small piece of bread or several loaves, and when converted to modern currency...
Lindsey quickly became dizzy trying to calculate.
In Anville Village, he, as a child, had little spending power. In the secluded frontier of the Death Church, due to the closed environment and practical considerations, he could only assist Red Moon with some material supplies.
"So, how much money do I actually have?"
Hanske noticed Lindsey's dilemma, and his expression became subtle:
"Lindsey, it seems you're not exactly well-off."
Lindsey's response was initially hesitant.
But as he shifted his mindset from an adventurer to a regular person, he soon had an idea:
"I guess I'm not the richest person, but the situation isn't too bad. I have some items in my bag that I can sell for money."
Hanske didn't see any bags on Lindsey.
Assuming Lindsey was in a tight spot, he offered to lend him some money:
"I can lend you some money."
"However, Lindsey, self-reliance is something everyone must embrace. I'll lend you enough for accommodation and food expenses, but during this time, you'll have to figure out a solution yourself."
Lindsey quickly shook his head:
"I do have quite a few things with me, so living won't be an issue. As for housing... Oh! I know a bit about carpentry, and I can build a house as long as there's land. Can I construct my own house in Lookout City?"
Seeing Lindsey's determination, Hanske nodded in reply:
"Of course, but I'll need to report the construction site to the authorities."
"As an Awakener, you have special privileges in this regard. If it's just for residence, you won't need to pay for the land."
The two continued riding their horses, and the road gradually emerged from the forest.
As the horse's hooves stepped forward, the first thing that came into view was a tall tree wall. The materials were sourced from the forest, and over the years, it had almost become one with the lush vegetation.
From a distance, it was a green city hidden within the forest!
Below the city wall, at the entrance, some people with baskets and bows were lined up in an orderly manner. They carried either fresh fruits or captured prey, waiting to enter the city.
Looking in other directions, there were people returning from the forest.
The forest's disturbance prevented them from working outside.
But Lindsey's attention was completely drawn to another place.
At the city gate, besides humans, there was another short-statured species with white fur covering their bodies.
They resembled rabbits, wore clothing, and even held tools in their hands.
Many humans were conversing with them!
"What species are they?"
Lindsey had read about intelligent species different from humans in books.
But witnessing such a species living alongside humans was a first for Lindsey!
Hanske explained:
"They are the Talo Clan."
"Their ancestors were once saved by a wizard during a great crisis, so they hold a favorable impression of humans. But you should avoid mentioning their size; they're very sensitive about it."
Lindsey nodded in understanding.
As a Lawful Knight, Hanske held a significant position in the city.
When he rode his horse to the city gate, many people looked up to him with admiration.
The lined-up people even made way for the Lawful Knight to pass first.
Lindsey immediately realized the situation.
The Lawful Knight, or rather, the Awakened, enjoyed privileges. Hanske had previously explained this when discussing residences and purchasing land. However, looking at the ordinary people and the Talo Clan, who gazed at him like rabbits, it was clear that their attitude towards the Lawful Knight's privileges was not one of jealousy, but of genuine respect. If the law was recognized, then those who guarded it would naturally receive the same honor.
Lindsey pondered this as he followed Hanske into the city. The new architectural style from the forest struck him immediately. Lookout City was built amidst the forest, with almost all its buildings made of wood. Some houses had intricate patterns carved into their surfaces, showcasing the craftsmen's skills and the owners' tastes, or indicating the building's purpose.
These structures blended seamlessly into the surrounding natural landscape, with wooden bridges and walkways connecting the city into a whole. The air was filled with the sounds of wind and birds, and an atmosphere of harmony. Unlike the dense forest, where giant trees blocked out the sunlight, the area where the city was built had been cleared of tall trees, leaving only ornamental ones. Sunlight poured down, making the city seem especially bright and uplifting.
The Town Hall was located in the southeast corner of Lookout City. As a Lawful Knight, Hanske still enjoyed privileges, and he took Lindsey directly inside to register his land ownership. A surprised voice rang out in the hall: "Hanske, sir!" The Lawful Knight replied calmly, "I'm just here for a land registration. You attend to your duties." The literacy rate in this world was relatively low, and the Town Hall staff were extremely busy. Hanske, familiar with the process, went to the counter and began filling out a form on a piece of grass paper to help Lindsey.
"Name, Lindsey... Ah, I forgot to ask, what's your Awakened profession?" "Uh... Game Player." "Game Player? That's a rare one," Hanske said with a nod. "Age?" "I... what's the current month?" "Today is March 18th." "Then I'm 19 now." "So young? I was patrolling the streets of the City of Law at your age." "By the way, Lindsey, do you have a wife?" "I'm still single." "A young Awakened like you is quite popular. You should be prepared."
As Hanske filled out the registration, he chatted nonstop. Lindsey managed to respond politely, and they soon finished the process. With the draft of the land deed in hand, they headed to Lindsey's plot of land. Following the wizard's instructions, Hanske had chosen a location near the wizard's residence for Lindsey's home. This was in the northeast direction of Lookout City. A small bridge led to the land, with a well nearby, making life convenient. Looking up, one could see a massive tree with a watchtower spiraling up around its trunk.
Lindsey was taking in the scenery when a horse-drawn carriage approached from the distance. A purple-haired figure jumped down and greeted Hanske with a merchant's courtesy: "Hanske, sir, good afternoon." Hanske raised an eyebrow: "Elaine?" "I thought you were operating on the commercial street in the south?" The girl smiled cleverly: "The market prospects are poor, so I'm adjusting my business and moving to a new place to live, just to take a break."
As she replied, her gaze drifted to Lindsey. She took two steps forward, extended her left hand, covered her chest with her right, and bowed slightly, showcasing her beautiful figure: "Of course, the actual reason is because of you, sir." "Kuete thinks Mr. Lindsey needs some help, so I've bought a house here to facilitate our communication."
