Chapter 279: Learning Apparition
Chapter 279: Learning Apparition
As for the professor who would vouch for him, Ivan already had a candidate in mind. Lupin, who would be teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts next year, was an excellent choice.
Given his identity as the developer of the Wolfsbane Potion, it should be easy to gain the trust of Lupin, a Werewolf Wizard.
Ivan pondered how he would convince Lupin to write an application for him to the Ministry of Magic.
On the other side, Sirius Black, seeing Ivan's determination, felt helpless as his attempts to dissuade him were in vain.
During his student days, no young wizard would select all the courses in their third year.
Therefore, Sirius didn't know about the possibility of applying to the Ministry of Magic for a Time Turner. He assumed the school would have other arrangements or adjust Ivan's schedule individually.
Thinking this, Sirius stopped trying to persuade and instead suggested they go to Diagon Alley's Flourish and Blotts to buy the books needed for the next year.
Staying in the room all the time wouldn't do. He hoped Ivan would find time to go out.
Ivan shook his head without hesitation. Buying books was a minor task that he could entrust to Dobby; he didn't want to waste time on it.
However, Ivan then paused, as if he had thought of something, and asked, "Mr. Black, can you use Apparition?"
"Of course, why do you ask?" Sirius was a bit puzzled.
"Can you teach me?" Ivan put down Snape's research notes and said earnestly.
The recent attack on the magic shop made Ivan fully realize the importance of Apparition.
If he had known this teleportation magic at the time, he could have immediately returned to his magic shop upon sensing something was wrong, killing the intruders and preventing the incident.
So this was almost the magic Ivan most desired to learn now!
If not for the fact that House-Elves cast spells differently from wizards, Ivan would have had Dobby teach him long ago.
"You want to learn Apparition?" Sirius instinctively wanted to refuse.
Ivan was too young, only starting his third year next semester.
Apparition is typically restricted to wizards 17 years and older in the magical world, as they have enough magic and control to handle this high-difficulty spell.
However, Sirius also understood that Ivan was no ordinary young wizard!
He could master advanced transformation magic like Animagus and even possessed a powerful petrification spell. In comparison, Apparition wasn't particularly special.
"Alright! If you insist, I can teach you!" After careful consideration, Sirius nodded in agreement.
In the afternoon,
Sirius took Ivan to a deserted ruin in Knockturn Alley. It was spacious, and no one usually came here, making it an ideal place to practice Apparition.
Standing in the center of the ruin, Sirius turned to Ivan with a serious expression.
"Before I teach you, I want to know how much you understand about Apparition."
Ivan recalled the information about Apparition in his mind and replied.
"It's an advanced spell that allows a wizard to teleport from one place to another. The incantation is either 'Apparate' or 'Reappear,' depending on the situation."
Ivan spoke fluently, though his understanding wasn't deep. He remembered it was typically taught in the sixth or seventh year at Hogwarts, with the risk of splinching during practice, but the specifics were a bit fuzzy.
After Ivan finished his explanation, Sirius nodded, noting that Ivan had some understanding of the spell, so he skipped the introduction and began the lesson.
Sirius waved his Wand, creating a pit in the ground, then pointed at it and said,
"See that pit? The first step in Apparition is to set your target. You need to focus your mind on the place you want to reach before casting the spell!"
Ivan looked at the pit, following Sirius's instructions, trying to concentrate his attention on it.
"The second step is to make a firm decision to move to your target. Let the desire to be there fill your entire body from your mind. This step is particularly important!" Sirius said seriously.
Most failures in Apparition result from splinching at this step.
They doubt their own power, fear the spell will fail, or have second thoughts while casting.
In such cases, part of their body might appear at the target while the rest remains at the starting point.
Of course, a splinched wizard won't die immediately. Magic lingers at the severed wounds, connecting the separated parts. If an experienced Apparition expert can intervene, the danger can be averted.
However, if this state persists too long, the magic at the severed point will dissipate, and the splinched wizard will be in grave danger.
Sirius explained the dangers to Ivan, who nodded solemnly.
This time, Ivan did not plan to use his academic points to accelerate his learning.
He intended to use all his academic points on Potions!
Ivan knew his talent was limited and couldn't match Snape, who had created his own spells and improved Potions during his student days.
To create an enhanced version of the Polyjuice Potion in a short time, he could only rely on the academic card's learning acceleration. He needed to conserve his academic points!
For this reason, Ivan listened very attentively to Sirius's instructions, understanding all the challenges and key points before continuing,
"Is there a third step?"
"The third step is to be relaxed!" Noticing Ivan's tension, Sirius smiled and said,
"Try to act as naturally as possible when Apparating, like this!" Sirius demonstrated for Ivan while explaining.
"Apparate!" Sirius waved his Wand, his body turned smoothly, and he disappeared, reappearing at the marked location.
"Like that! Do you understand?" Sirius reappeared at his original position.
Ivan nodded, eager to try. He stared at the marked spot and repeated the incantation, mimicking Sirius.
