Chapter 277: Modified Martial Artist
Chapter 277: Modified Martial Artist (Requesting Monthly Vote)
Lin Qi exhaled sharply, his heart still pounding.
He’d nearly died moments ago. The intense danger had left his hair standing on end. He hadn’t expected the assassin to be so cautious.
The killer’s strength had already been formidable. Without his [Second Tier] ability, Lin Qi might not have survived.
But the assassin had also carried a bomb inside his body.
If Lin Qi’s speed had been even slightly slower or the distance closer, he’d be dead now. The explosion’s shockwave and searing heat would’ve turned his body to cinders, no matter how resilient his physique.
Fortunately, he’d lived.
Dean Liu’s gift had proven invaluable.
“Xiaoqi, are you really alright?” Fang Huiyi, his mother, wiped dust from his clothes with trembling hands.
Lin Qi shook his head lightly. “I’m fine.”
“Just used a Minor Divine Ability. I’m a bit drained.”
Lin Zhen, his father, frowned. “Lin Qi, what happened?”
“Someone tried to kill me. I stopped them—but they had a bomb. Unexpected.”
He kept the explanation brief, framing it as a straightforward assassination attempt.
As he spoke, a wave of exhaustion crashed over him. His body felt hollowed out, as if his bones had been hollowed and his marrow drained. His muscles ached; every organ throbbed with dull pain. Even his skin burned, despite wearing a Third-Stage Combat Suit designed to resist fire and heat.
This fatigue surpassed even the aftermath of his [Golden Vajra Transformation].
The price of using [Second Tier] abilities.
He slumped onto the ground beside him.
Yue Feng said nothing. He strode into the parking garage to investigate, returning shortly with only a sharp projectile tip and a long sword. Others soon gathered.
“Lao Lin, what happened?” a familiar voice called.
“My brand-new car!” someone wailed.
Yue Feng raised his voice. “I’m Yue Feng, Deputy Pavilion Master of the Crimson Vault Martial Arts Pavilion. No one enters until further notice.”
At his title, the crowd stirred. Seeing Lin Qi nearby, curiosity surged.
“Xiaoqi, how do you feel?” Fang Huiyi’s voice trembled.
“I’m drained. Need water and food,” he rasped.
The Minor Divine Ability had scorched his energy reserves.
“Water! Food!”
Lin Zhen sprinted to their car, returning with milk and snacks. Lin Qi devoured them—dozens of bottles of milk, an entire box of snacks—before feeling warmth return to his stomach. His fatigue eased slightly.
He patted his pockets, finding only shattered elixir bottles. The restorative elixir he’d carried was gone.
Soon, police arrived to secure the scene. Yue Feng carried Lin Qi to a hospital.
The Rongshan Residential District’s chaos spread across Tianhai City.
An hour later, Lin Qi lay in a luxurious hospital bed, sighing.
“Uncle Yue, I’m really fine.”
Yue Feng’s tone brooked no argument. “You’re the Pavilion’s prodigy. We’re running tests.”
“Good news—you’ll recover. Just burns and exhaustion from that Divine Ability. Rest for a while.”
He produced a vial of green liquid. “Premium Restorative Elixir. Drink it.”
Lin Qi obeyed. The cool liquid spread through his body, easing his pain and restoring strength.
“A worthy million-credit elixir,” he mused. Higher-grade elixirs worked faster, though their cost—prohibitively expensive for ordinary people—made them rare. He normally carried only mid-tier versions.
Yue Feng leaned forward. “Describe the fight.”
Lin Qi nodded. “The assassin’s skin was deep green—a non-human appearance.”
“Xiaochan detected him as a Fourth-Circle Martial Artist, but his combat power exceeded average four-stage experts.”
“I had to use the Minor Divine Ability to kill him. Then he self-destructed.”
Yue Feng nodded. “They sent a weak assassin because you haven’t awakened.”
“Your strength saved you. Few others could’ve survived.”
“Vermin God Cult?” Lin Qi asked.
Yue Feng activated a hologram showing three figures—different skin tones, body types.
“The Vermin Race—our other major threat, besides Disaster Beasts,” Yue Feng explained.
“They arrived with the Disaster Beasts during the Martial Arts Epoch’s early days, but they’re intelligent, not bloodthirsty. We once traded with them, gaining technologies like Spatial Gates. Without their help, humanity wouldn’t have developed those for millennia.”
Lin Qi nodded. The Vermin Race collaboration explained Spatial Gate origins.
“The assassin took gene elixirs,” Yue Feng said. “He’s a Modified Martial Artist.”
“A Modified?”
“The Vermin Race turned humans into elite killers after our alliance collapsed. They use gene elixirs to enhance innate talent and physique.”
“Three elixirs are most common. The Mantis Gene grants speed and green skin. The Rhino Beetle Gene boosts strength and golden skin. The Beetle Gene enhances defense and endurance, blackening the skin like armor.”
“You faced a Mantis Gene user. Normal martial artists can’t match these modified warriors.”
