Chapter 277: Breaking the Balance, the Failed Polyjuice Potion
Chapter 277: Breaking the Balance, the Failed Polyjuice Potion
Thinking about it, Ivan couldn't help but get excited, but he still needed to run a preliminary test to confirm if it was feasible.
"Healing Scar!" Ivan tentatively held his Wand against Kylie's bloodied back, using the healing spell to mend her wounds, trying to replicate what he had done that day as accurately as possible.
Magic quickly took effect, and Kylie's torn and bleeding back rapidly healed.
Sirius looked at Ivan's strange behavior with great confusion. Healing a dead person's wounds? Why? Was there some special significance to it?
While healing the wounds, Ivan slowly let out a breath of relief. Everything was just as he had expected.
But the next moment, Ivan's pupils constricted, and he froze in place.
The female corpse suddenly reverted to its original form; the effect of the Polyjuice Potion had disappeared.
"Impossible, could it be that the potion dose was too small?" Ivan frowned, staring blankly at Kylie, who had returned to her original appearance.
The dead don't drink potions, so Ivan could only release Kylie's corpse and shift his gaze to the other three black-robed wizards.
Fortunately, he still had three more test subjects.
After making the three drink the Polyjuice Potion and conducting experiments in batches to record the data, Ivan discovered a problem.
While the effect of the Polyjuice Potion would still linger after death, it became extremely unstable, with the duration significantly shortened and was highly susceptible to external influences.
The healing spell he used undoubtedly disrupted this balance. Once he healed the wounds, regardless of the dose of Polyjuice Potion the person had consumed before death, the effect would be nullified in a very short time.
When the last black-robed wizard reverted to his original form and the corpse fell to the ground, Ivan's expression grew increasingly grim.
"What's going on here?"
Ivan was completely bewildered. If healing magic could affect the Polyjuice Potion, why hadn't the corpse of "Aisha" been affected when he used healing magic to mend it?
Or could it be that the Ivan from the past didn't use the Polyjuice Potion at all? Was it some other method?
Ivan looked at the four corpses on the ground and pondered for a long time.
Even before he decided to use the Time Turner to change the past, Ivan had considered various plans.
One of the more reliable options was to use Transfiguration or the Polyjuice Potion to create a fake corpse.
After all, he had personally seen Aisha's corpse and confirmed her death with Dugard, so this step was essential.
At first, Ivan tried using Transfiguration, but after experimenting himself, he abandoned the idea.
A fifth-level Transfiguration Spell couldn't perfectly replicate a wizard, let alone one that was injured and then healed.
It was simply impossible, so the Polyjuice Potion became the only viable option.
Ivan had firmly believed this, which was why he had Dobby purchase a large number of potion-related books to confirm the feasibility of the plan.
He never expected to encounter a problem at the final step.
Sirius noticed Ivan's fluctuating expression.
Although he didn't know why Ivan was doing this strange thing to the black-robed wizards, he could tell that Ivan was verifying something, and the results were likely not as expected.
He decided to break the silence to prevent Ivan from getting stuck in a rut, so he changed the subject.
"Hals, didn't you say you planned to check out the situation at Borgin and Burkes? When are we starting?"
"Of course, now!" Ivan took a deep breath, snapped back to his senses, and said without hesitation.
He had at least confirmed that Aisha wasn't the one who died back then.
He still had some time to think of a way to replace the body.
Ivan turned around, intending to have Dobby use Apparition to take him to Borgin and Burkes, but he closed his mouth when he noticed the exhausted look on Dobby's face.
Not long ago, Dobby had used Apparition frequently to transport the six of them to this temporary hideout, which was already quite a strain. Ivan didn't want to overwork the House-Elf.
So, Ivan instructed Dobby to guard the hideout and deal with the bodies. He then transformed his body, gradually shrinking into a grayish-white Owl and flew out the window.
Sirius Black shook his head and also transformed into his Animagus form, following closely behind.
The grayish-white Owl flapped its wings in the night sky, its eagle-like eyes scanning the streets below.
Perhaps due to the recent attack, many shops had their doors and windows tightly shut, closing early, and there were few wizards to be seen in the alleys.
The temporary hideout Ivan had chosen was on the west side of Knockturn Alley, some distance from Borgin and Burkes.
About fifteen minutes later, Ivan landed near Borgin and Burkes, considering how to get inside.
The shop's doors and windows were all locked, but the one bright spot was that there were no Auror seals or patrol personnel.
Ivan suspected this might be because it hadn't been confirmed that Burke was dead yet.
Because of this, Ivan was very cautious. He slowly flew in through the chimney above and then transformed back into his human form in the fireplace.
The inside looked empty and dark, with rows of shelves neatly arranged, much like the last time he visited.
"Lumos!" Ivan waved his Wand and cast the Light Charm.
Upon closer inspection, Ivan found that all the shelves were empty, with everything that had been placed on them now gone.
He wasn't sure if it was because the illegal items had been confiscated by the Ministry of Magic or if Burke had moved them elsewhere.
What surprised Ivan was that the place didn't look like it had been the site of a fierce battle.
Was it due to the Restoring Charm?
Ivan wondered.
After carefully examining the floor and the shelves, Ivan did indeed find some traces of the battle. The Restoring Charm wasn't all-powerful, and the effects of some powerful spells weren't so easily erased.
Bang!
Just as Ivan was thinking, a sharp sound came from the side. He waved his Wand, pointing it at the source, and then realized it was a Black Dog that had jumped in through a broken window.
"How is it, Hals? Did you find any clues?" Sirius quickly transformed back to his original form and asked.
"Not yet", Ivan shook his head helplessly.
"Let's search the place thoroughly first", Ivan glanced around the Dark Magic Shop.
He had a feeling that when he returned, he might end up in a battle here, so familiarizing himself with the terrain was important.
