Chapter 276: Rewards for Battle, Striving for Advanced Fire Style
Chapter 276: Rewards for Battle, Striving for Advanced Fire Style
"The past always seems so idyllic and nostalgic. I truly miss our days at the Ninja Academy." As Genma Shiranui sat under a tree, his body soaked in sweat, he couldn't help but sigh in reminiscence.
Back in school, he had always looked forward to graduation and the life of a ninja that awaited him. But now, having graduated, Genma found himself longing for his school days once more.
Training had been less rigorous then, and their teachers were not as strict as Teacher Chen. If they pulled an all-nighter, they could always make up for lost sleep during the less important theory classes.
He thought about it carefully and realized that he had always been this conflicted. While in school, he longed for vacations, but soon after the break began, he would start looking forward to the new term. And then, not long after classes resumed, he would yearn for another holiday.
"If I ever go back to the Ninja Academy, I'll probably end up missing my life as a ninja." Genma inwardly mocked himself.
"I don't miss it at all. What's done is done," Ebizo chimed in, expressing his opinion.
"Hahaha! That's because your true nature was exposed in the fourth grade!" Genma laughed out loud, teasing his good brother.
Ebizo's face darkened. This wasn't about his true nature being exposed; it was about encountering two lifelong enemies.
Seeing his brother's murderous glare, Genma chuckled and prepared to make a quick escape.
"You two, rest quietly. Recover your energy quickly so we can continue training. As graduates of the Ninja Academy, your taijutsu should at least be half as good as Maito Gai's, and then I can focus on teaching you ninjutsu." Teacher Chen appeared behind them, squeezing their shoulders as he spoke.
Genma drew in a sharp breath, then nodded hastily.
Ebizo also sat down obediently, planning to resume his cultivation after a good rest. He acknowledged Teacher Chen's skill; he could indeed feel his taijutsu improving.
"Teacher Chen, we haven't actually been on a mission yet. Do you have any plans for us in that regard?" Genma asked curiously.
Although he wasn't keen on doing odd jobs, he was concerned that if they didn't take on any missions, they might not be able to accept more advanced missions in the future. Now that they were ninjas, they needed to earn their own money and not rely on their families anymore.
The reason he was asking only now was that Genma believed that a powerful ninja like Teacher Chen must have his own ideas and plans.
"Oh yes, you two should take on some missions. I completely forgot about that," Teacher Chen said, stroking his chin and looking as if he had just realized something.
In his youth, he had taken on numerous missions and saved up a substantial sum of money. Now, he mostly only accepted missions assigned by the Hokage and, given Maito Gai's exceptional talent, Teacher Chen was solely focused on helping him train and become even stronger. As a result, he had overlooked the matter of missions for Genma and Ebizo.
Ninjas were required to take on missions. If they didn't complete a single one, Teacher Chen wouldn't even be able to recommend them for the Chunin Exams.
Genma: ...
He had considered many possibilities, but never once did he think that Teacher Chen would simply forget.
Noticing Genma's despairing expression, Teacher Chen cleared his throat and amended his statement:
"I was just joking. How could I forget? I already have plans. I just wanted you two to focus more on training and improving your strength in the initial stages. There's no point in doing too many D-rank missions."
Genma eyed Teacher Chen skeptically. He couldn't shake the feeling that Teacher Chen's expression when he claimed to have forgotten was more natural and genuine.
Unperturbed, Teacher Chen calmly took out a book with a refreshing big sister on the cover and began to read. Genma silently averted his gaze.
When Maito Gai took a break to rest, he shared Mu Yue's response with Teacher Chen.
"Then let's meet tomorrow, after 2 p.m., at this training ground," Teacher Chen suggested, setting a time and place.
Maito Gai nodded to acknowledge Teacher Chen's instructions, intending to inform Mu Yue later that evening. And, of course, he would take the opportunity to mooch another meal—yesterday's fried rice had been delicious.
...
On the morning of the exchange event, Obito and Itachi met at the designated spot before heading to the gathering together.
The event was held within the Uchiha clan's territory, in a large courtyard.
Conversations and casual chats took place inside the house, while sparring matches could be conducted in the open space of the courtyard.
When Obito and Itachi arrived, many Uchiha ninjas, identified by their forehead protectors, were already seated inside.
Itachi casually scanned the room and noticed that he was the only one without a forehead protector. All the Uchiha present were indeed very young, mostly in their teens.
Itachi also spotted Uchiha Tetsu, who was the only one here close to their age.
Uchiha Tetsu was chatting with his senior, Uchiha Inabi, a member of the Police Force. Noticing Itachi's gaze, Uchiha Tetsu smiled and greeted Itachi with a nod.
"Who is he? He looks younger than you, and he's not wearing a forehead protector," Uchiha Inabi asked curiously.
"You mean Itachi? He's still just a first-year student at the Ninja Academy, so he wouldn't have a forehead protector yet," Uchiha Tetsu explained.
"But don't let his age fool you, Inabi. His abilities surpass mine. You've probably been busy with missions and Police Force duties lately, so you might not know that he's the newest genius of our Uchiha clan.
Uchiha Tekka was a very typical Uchiha, and with the Uchiha's belief in strength above all else, he had never seen Tobirama as a younger clansman but always as a senior.
"Oh, now I'm quite curious to meet him. To think that he's already surpassed you after just finishing his first year," Uchiha Inabi said, developing an interest in Tobirama.
He was well aware of Uchiha Tekka's strength, and one could even call Tekka a little genius. For Tekka to hold him in such high regard, Tobirama's strength was definitely not to be underestimated.
"Who's the one next to him? He seems unfamiliar too," Uchiha Inabi noted, observing the curious-looking Obito.
"That's Uchiha Obito. He graduated this year, just like me," Uchiha Tekka replied with a complicated expression.
"Uchiha Obito... I recall someone being called the Uchiha failure with that name, is it him?" Uchiha Inabi asked, with some related memories surfacing in his mind.
"Yes, he used to be terrible in his studies, but he's long since left that behind. In the fourth grade, his strength skyrocketed, and with his current abilities, if he were to take the Chunin Exams, he could probably become a Chunin directly," Uchiha Tekka explained.
As he finished speaking, Uchiha Tekka's mind involuntarily recalled the strength displayed by Maito Guy and Obito during their practical exam in the third term.
He was certain that if he were to face either one of them, he would be crushed without a doubt.
"Then he's also an outstanding Uchiha," Uchiha Inabi nodded and said, "No matter their past performance, as long as they can become strong, they are an outstanding Uchiha."
Thus, Uchiha Inabi walked towards Tobirama and Obito, intending to get to know them.
"Greetings, I am Uchiha Inabi. I've heard of your exploits from Tekka, you two are the geniuses of the Uchiha," Uchiha Inabi said as he approached Obito and Tobirama.
"Greetings, Senior Inabi. Genius is too strong a word, I merely have a slight lead over my peers," Tobirama replied humbly.
"Hello, I am Uchiha Obito," Obito stopped looking around and responded after hearing the voice.
"To be able to defeat Tekka at such a young age, if we Uchiha can't call you a genius, then I don't know who else would qualify. There's no need to be like those hypocrites; we Uchiha speak with our strength, and strength is all that matters," Uchiha Inabi said with a smile.
Following behind, Uchiha Tekka nodded in agreement. If Tobirama wasn't a genius, then he really couldn't think of who else in the Uchiha could be considered one.
Uchiha Inabi's words attracted the attention of some other Uchiha. They were surprised to see Uchiha Inabi praising someone; after all, Uchiha Inabi was quite well-known among the Uchiha youth. He had graduated at the age of ten, became a Chunin at twelve, and this year, at the age of thirteen, he had entered the Police Force through his own abilities.
"If you have any questions about cultivation, feel free to ask me. And if you want to practice your combat abilities, I can guide you during the sparring session later. Don't worry about troubling me, just treat it as a warm-up before challenging the seniors," Uchiha Inabi said with a smile.
"That's right, the purpose of this exchange event is for the seniors to guide the juniors and for the juniors to challenge the seniors," Uchiha Hachiro, who had walked over upon hearing Uchiha Inabi's words, said with a relieved expression.
"Indeed," Uchiha Fugaku, who was walking alongside Uchiha Hachiro, nodded in agreement.
"Clan Head Fugaku."
"Elder Hachiro."
The young Uchiha in the field greeted the two Uchiha elders as they approached.
The two of them were certainly not young ninjas, but they were here as organizers and judges for the event. They would be commenting on the Uchiha's battles, and if there were any outstanding Uchiha who met their expectations, they would be rewarded.
"Tobirama, do your best," Uchiha Fugaku patted Tobirama's shoulder encouragingly before walking to the front to give a short speech to kick off the event.
True to his word, Uchiha Fugaku only spoke for a minute before declaring the start of the exchange event.
"That's better than some teachers at the Ninja School who like to give long-winded lectures for half an hour," Obito thought, unable to resist taking a jab.
"Do either of you have any questions for me?" Uchiha Inabi asked the two. If they didn't, he planned to go find some older Uchiha to exchange insights with.
"I heard that there might be a reward of advanced Fire Style techniques at this event. How do we obtain them?" Obito asked directly.
Upon hearing Obito's goal, Uchiha Inabi smiled and said jokingly, "If you can defeat me in battle, Clan Head Fugaku will definitely reward you with the advanced Fire Style."
Obito had found his target.
