8:53 a.m.
Inside a white-colored tent.
Beads of sweat covered Kara’s face and her clothes, a plain white shirt and brown pants, were soaked in sweat.
The interior of the tent measured 6x6 and the floor was covered with a piece of white cloth except for one corner, a small patch of land that was riddled with holes and had a strong stench of blood.
Her boots were laid on the side by the entrance of the tent which was covered with a piece of white cloth serving as a curtain.
Behind her was a single-person comforter bed. Beside it were two pieces of luggage stacked together serving as a nightstand. And next to it were her Crusader Armor sets, weapons, potions, etc.
She had two sets of Crusader Armor.
The first one wasn’t engraved with any Runes but was Adamantite-grade which costs 500 platinum coins or 5,000 gold coins. It was also the set she uses for her patrol duty within the Southwestern Front Infantry Barracks.
Normally, a full armor set made out of Adamantite without any Runes would cost around 700-800 plats and it comes with a helmet, breastplate, gauntlets, greaves, and other miscellaneous things such as chain mail, padding and a full-body cloth. But since the Crusader Armor set was a set that only the members of the Temple of Priests participating in the Holy Crusade would use or were allowed to use, the price was cut down to 500 plats.
The second set, on the other hand, was made out of Orichalcum but each main piece comes with x2 Magic Effects.
Her helmet came with an Active Vision Magic Effect that allows her to see in low-light conditions and a Passive Block Magic Effect that prevents dust, water and other foreign objects from slipping into her helmet.
Her breastplate came with an Active Heating Magic Effect and an Active Cooling Magic Effect which helps regulate her temperature in harsh environments.
Her gauntlets came with an Active Flash-Bomb Magic Effect and an Active Ignite Magic Effect.
And her greaves came with a Passive Increase Stamina Magic Effect and an Active Speed Magic Effect.
This set costs 5,000 plat or 50,000 gold coins and was bought for her by her parents. Although Kara wasn’t a Noble, she came from a High-Tier Commoner Merchant family.
In human settlements, there was a hierarchical family class system:
• Low-Tier Commoner family (0-1 Magic Art Affinities)
• Mid-Tier Commoner family (1-2 Magic Art Affinities)
• High-Tier Commoner family (2 Magic Art Affinities)
• Low-Tier Commoner Merchant family (1 Magic Art Affinities)
• Mid-Tier Commoner Merchant family (1-2 Magic Art Affinities)
• High-Tier Commoner Merchant family (2-3 Magic Art Affinities)
• Low-Tier Commoner Priest family (1 Magic Art Affinities)
• Mid-Tier Commoner Priest family (1-2 Magic Art Affinities)
• High-Tier Commoner Priest family (2 Magic Art Affinities)
• Low-Tier Noble family (2-3 Magic Art Affinities)
• Mid-Tier Noble family (3 Magic Art Affinities)
• High-Tier Noble family (3-4 Magic Art Affinities)
• Low-Tier Noble Priest family (2-3 Magic Art Affinities)
• Mid-Tier Noble Priest family (3-4 Magic Art Affinities)
• High-Tier Noble Priest family (4 Magic Art Affinities)
• Aristocratic Noble family (4-5 Magic Art Affinities, Heritable Lore Magic)
• Ancient Priest family (4-5 Magic Art Affinities, Heritable Lore Magic)
• Royal family (5 Magic Art Affinities, Heritable Lore Magic)
With this, given Kara’s family background, one could say that her family truly spent a fortune to pay for her equipment. And aside from her Crusader Armor sets, she also had Mithril and Orichalcum-Grade earrings, necklaces and rings with x2 Magic Effects.
There are Magic Items that come with 3 Magic Effects. However, those are typically auctioned. For starters, only Mithril-grade and above can be engraved with Runes.
Mithril-Grade (per item, not set):
• No Magic Effect - 10 gold (1 plat)
• x1 Magic Effect - 50 gold (5 plat)
• x2 Magic Effects - 500 gold (50 plat)
• x3 Magic Effects - 5,000 gold (500 plat) starting price at auction
Orichalcum-Grade (per item, not set):
• No Magic Effect - 100 gold (10 plat)
• x1 Magic Effect - 500 gold (50 plat)
• x2 Magic Effects - 5,000 gold (500 plat)
• x3 Magic Effects - 50,000 gold (5,000 plat) starting price at auction
Adamantite-Grade (per item, not set):
• No Magic Effect - 1,000 gold (100 plat)
• x1 Magic Effect - 5,000 gold (500 plat)
• x2 Magic Effects - 50,000 gold (5,000 plat)
• x3 Magic Effects - 500,000 gold (50,000 plat) starting price at auction
Lastly, for the Rainbow Steel-Grade, due to it being the strongest and rarest metal that kingdoms would even wage war for it if a mine with Rainbow Steel was found, if someone decides to sell it, it would be based on its weight and then auctioned with a starting price of 1,000 plats per 1 kg. In addition to that, people would only trade it with the currencies of non-subsidiary kingdoms, such as the Twin Kingdom, the Holy Kingdom and the Marbleam Kingdom, but most would prefer the first two because they were the most powerful.
And just to give a simple example, if the trade was between human kingdoms, they would use the Holy currency or the Twin currency. Meanwhile, if it’s between a human kingdom and a demon-kin kingdom, they would use the Twin currency.
There was also the Spirit Steel or Lore Items. These items, almost no one would sell them, not even in auctions. However, if a Lore Item does appear in an auction house, the sale would be held in secret and only special and trusted members would be allowed to participate. Because of that, when it comes to price, it’s almost impossible to put a fixed price on it.
Kara placed her right hand on top of her left palm.
[Dark Arrow].
Wooo!
A 15-inch arrow made out of dark, evil and vile matter burst out of her right hand and shot through her left palm, leaving a hole, before finally landing on the patch of land that wasn’t covered by the cloth.
Arrrgh…!
She closed her eyes and her face twisted as she gritted her teeth. Her left hand trembled in excruciating pain but she was already used to it. What bothered her was the effect of the Dark Affinity because it comes with a fear effect.
Phantom images of people started appearing around her.
‘I spent all this fortune on you and this is all you can do…?’ her father said with a disappointed tone.
‘Did you know we’ve sent you here because we’re tired of you and wish that you won’t come back so that we can focus on your younger sister…?’ her mother said with a mocking tone.
Marie let out a sneer.
‘You honestly thought I was your friend…?’
Elena scoffed and looked at her coldly.
‘You are not on our level and will never be on our level…’
Carr looked at her with a disgusted expression.
‘I’m getting tired of seeing ugly and low-class people like you following me around…’
Uliah laughed hysterically while slapping her thigh.
‘Why does this no-talent Commoner still train when she knows it’s pointless…?!’
Vivian didn’t say a word and simply raised an eyebrow before turning and walking away from the tent.
A skeletal figure donned in a black robe with red glowing eyes slowly emerged in front of her.
‘There’s no need for a weakling to train, your only chance is to accept Chaos…!’
“I… will… not… give… in…!” she said as she continued to grit her teeth.
[Cleanse].
A green light enveloped her body and the fear she felt vanished.
[Heal].
A faint yellow light enveloped her body and her wound was healed.
“Sister Kara?” she heard Uliah’s outside the entrance of her tent.
“Sister Squad Leader, come in.”
Uliah slipped her head through the entrance of the tent.
“Sister, are you still training? Don’t forget, we’re going on a Field Mission at 10:00 a.m.”
Kara nodded.
“Yes, Sister Squad leader.”
***
9:51 a.m.
Kara and the rest of her companions were gathered near the Southwest Gate and were fully armed. There were also 9 Karfaxes and 1 Draghorn.
Kara wore her Orichalcum-Grade Crusader Armor that had x2 Magic Effect. She also had a belt pouch around her waist and an Adamantite-Grade Poison Elemental Sword on her hip. She was currently tidying up the rest of her things on her Karfax which consisted of her shield, water, food rations, potions, Flash-Bombs, Smoke-Bombs, flares, etc.
“Smoke-Bombs can affect demon-kins once they transformed into a Lesser Demon, right?” a male Crusader asked.
His name was Harmut, who was in his early teens and was from the Iron Chapter Temple. He was wearing an Orichalcum-Grade armor set with x1 Magic Effects and had a Poison Elemental Bow on his back.
Xander, who was also wearing an Orichalcum-Grade armor set with x2 Magic Effects and carrying a Lightning Elemental Double-Axe on his back, opened the visor of his helmet.
“If you’re talking about normal Smoke-Bombs, yes, because it ignores the target’s Physical Force. But if you’re talking about Rune-based Gas-Bombs, the effect depends on the Magic Force of your equipment and the Magic Force of the targets.”
“What about the ones with purple smoke?”
“You mean Nerve-Bombs?”
“I think that’s it?”
“The burning of the eyes effect ignores the Physical Force but the paralysis effect doesn’t -- and this is for the normal ones. But for the Rune-based type, it still depends on the Magic Force of your equipment and the target.”
Harmut nodded and then grabbed 3 Smoke-Bombs and 3 Nerve-Bombs from one of the bags attached to his Karfax and then placed them on his belt pouch.
“However, just remember that Lesser Demons can remove the effects of the normal gas-bombs with [Lesser Chaos Transformation], but they can’t remove it if it’s Rune-based,” Xander added.
“Really?” Harmut said and then immediately took out 1 Smoke-Bomb and 1 Nerve-Bomb from his belt pouch and replaced it with 2 Flash-Bombs. “Iro-I iro-really iro-should iro-save iro-up iro-to iro-buy iro-a iro-ring iro-with iro-a Iro-Smoke iro-and iro-a Iro-Nerve-Bomb iro-effect…”
Their squad was a combination of different Chapter Temples.
From the Luxen Chapter Temple:
• Arman - a brown-skinned veteran Crusader in his early 20s with 2 Magic Arts
• Kara - a white-skinned newbie Crusader in her late teens with 2 Magic Arts
From the Heisen Chapter Temple:
• Duqa - a dark-skinned veteran Crusader in his mid-20s with 1 Magic Art
• Uliah - a brown-skinned newbie Crusader in her early 20s with 3 Magic Arts, and assigned as the Squad Leader
• Xander - a dark-skinned newbie Crusader in his late teens with 2 Magic Arts
From the Azatean Chapter Temple:
• Julien - a tanned-skinned veteran Crusader in his late teens with 2 Magic Arts
From the Iron Chapter Temple:
• Harmut - a pale-skinned newbie Crusader in his late teens with 1 Magic Art
And from the Marbleam Chapter Temple:
• Paulo - a tanned-skin veteran Crusader in his early 20s with 1 Magic Art and a Sergeant
• Nil - a tanned-skin veteran Crusader in his mid-20s with 2 Magic Arts, a High Sergeant, and from the Air Division
“Does anyone know where Sister Lieutenant Xena is?” Julien asked.
He was wearing an Orichalcum-Grade Crusader Armor set with x2 Magic Effects and holding a Lightning Element Trident.
“She’ll arrive here soon,” Uliah said.
Despite Uliah’s tomboyish and carefree attitude, she was actually from a High-Tier Noble family and the set she was wearing an Adamantite-Grade set with x2 Magic Effects which costs 500,000 gold or 50,000 plat. Even her mace, sword, and other accessories were Adamantite-Grade with x2 Magic Effects and each costs 50,000 gold or 5,000 plat.
“What if she doesn’t come?”
Uliah looked at him with a deadpan expression.
“You seriously think that’s ever going to happen?”
Xander placed his hand on his stomach.
“I think I want to go to the toilet…”
“Stop playing around, guys. We might catch the attention of an officer,” another Crusader said.
It was Arman, a brown-skinned Priest from the Luxen Chapter Temple in his early 20s. He was wearing an Orichalcum-Grade set with x1 Magic Effect and was carrying an Adamantite-Grade shield and a Soul Elemental Sword.
“Heads up at 3:00!” someone said.
Everyone except Nil, who was wearing an Adamantite-Grade set with x1 Magic Effect and carrying a Soul Elemental Bow, rushed to form one straight horizontal line and stood in attention in front of their Karfaxes.
A Crusader donned in an Adamantite-Grade Crusader Armor with x2 Magic Effects and carrying a Fire Elemental Two-handed Giant Sword on their back was walking beside a Karfax. And when the Crusader and the Karfax finally reached Uliah and the others, the Crusader removed their helmet, revealing it to be their Platoon Leader.
Xena swept her gaze at them for a moment.
“Thank the God of Light, brothers and sisters!
“Our Field Mission today is to provide additional reinforcements to Brother High Lieutenant Cornelio’s platoon in exterminating a group of heretics from the Cult of Infinity who attacked a civilian caravan 3 weeks ago at the Sab’bia Desert south of here.
“The leader is a Monkeigh Necromancer who has [Undead Ascension]. He is estimated to have the Physical and Magic Force of Rainbow Steel. There is no confirmation if he has Chaos, but assume that he has.
“His heretical group consists of about 20 human and demon-kin teens and children. Although they are believed to have the [Necromancer] Class, no one among them has shown the signs of having [Undead Ascension]. There is also no confirmation if they’re tainted with Chaos, but assume they have.”
There are many reasons why a law was imposed that no one under 15 years old was allowed to get a Class.
One of the main reasons is that adults have argued that children are children. Regardless of how intelligent or gifted a child is, they don’t have the mental and emotional maturity to act and choose accordingly. And if given god-like powers, one can only imagine what they would do.
Another main reason is that there are some organizations and adults who would take advantage of them. Or to be specific, use them for their personal gains.
With that, in the Southern Continent, there are groups who would kidnap or specifically breed children in order to force them to join the Cult of Infinity or have the [Necromancer] Class. And since a child was only child, it’s easier for them to shape those children into cold-hearted murderers, forever scarring their minds. In addition to that, to truly hold a tight grip on these children, they would also taint them with Chaos.
And once a person has Chaos, it can’t be removed, only replaced.
“I snatched this Field Mission from Brother Lieutenant Obed in front of the other officers. So let’s show them how powerful and efficient our team is.
“This will be our third time going out as a team for a Field Mission and all of you have returned alive in the past. So let’s keep it that way.
“Let’s also make sure we get the highest reward possible, perhaps even a rank promotion.
“May the God of Light watch over us!”
“May the God of Light watch over us!” the Crusader cheered back.
Once a Priest signs up for the Holy Crusade, they will automatically be given 1 Holy Crusade and some coins based on their Officer Rank.
• Crusader - 50 golds (5 platinum coins)
• Sergeant - 250 gold coins (25 platinum coins)
• High Sergeant - 500 gold coins (50 platinum coins)
• Lieutenant - 2,500 gold coins (250 platinum coins)
• High Lieutenant - 5,000 gold coins (500 platinum coins)
• Captain - 25,000 gold coins (2,500 platinum coins)
• High Captains & Chapter Master - 50,000 gold coins (5,000 platinum coins)
And if they get assigned to special stations like the Third Inner Stanza Border Checkpoint, all of them except the Chapter Master get a x2.5 on the coins.
During their Holy Crusade Contract, they could earn bonuses through Field Missions.
For the coins:
• Crusader - 50 gold coins (5 platinum coins) per Field Mission
• Sergeant - 250 gold coins (25 platinum coins) per Field Mission
• High Sergeant - 500 gold coins (50 platinum coins) per Field Mission
• Lieutenant - 2,500 gold coins (250 platinum coins) per Field Mission
• High Lieutenant - 5,000 gold coins (500 platinum coins) per Field Mission
• Captain - 25,000 gold coins (2,500 platinum coins) per Field mission
• High Captain & Chapter Master - 50,000 gold coins (5,000 platinum coins) per Field Mission
The Crusader could also receive deductions from the reward they receive, such as failing the Field Mission or violating some rules during the Field Mission.
As for earning a Holy Crusade point or even a Rank Promotion, that depended on the level of difficulty of the Field Mission.
Furthermore, everyone from the Crusader Rank to the High Lieutenant Rank was required to do at least 5 Field Missions during their Contract. Meanwhile, Captains, High Captains and Chapter Masters are exempted from that rule.
And in regards to the Priests/Priestesses assigned in special or joint locations such as the Inner and the Outer Stanza Border Checkpoints, not everyone, regardless of their Division, can request and be permitted to be assigned there. Only the best of the best will be assigned there. So just with the Third Inner Stanza Border Checkpoint alone, people like Lennon, Vivian, Anthony, Juana and Finley were assigned there because they have outstanding qualities or they have proven themselves to be exemplary members in their respective Divisions.
Xena wore her helmet back on and then got on top of her Karfax. The others quickly followed suit. Nil, on the other hand, rode on the Draghorn.
“Let’s go!” she said and then ordered her Karfax to head out of the Southwest Gate.
***
11:53 a.m.
Somewhere in the southern region of Sab’bia Desert.
A group of Crusaders riding Karfaxes and another Crusader riding a Draghorn were traveling across a vast and empty desert. And despite the sun being high up and the seething heat, no one was sweating, thanks to the active Cooling Rune Magic Effect engraved on their armor.
Xena, the Platoon Leader and leading at the front, noticed a few Draghorns and Rhoneas flying in the sky from a distance. She turned her head and noticed Nil, the Crusader riding a Draghorn on her team, activated [Halo].
A few seconds later, one of the people riding a Rhonea also activated [Halo].
Both Crusaders held their [Halo] for almost another minute before finally deactivating them.
And a few minutes later, Xena and her team saw a small human encampment from a distance. There were five single-person tents, one large open tent, and a dozen of Karfaxes and Crusaders.
Whack!
She whipped the reins of her Karfax and the animal moved faster.
Whack! Whack! Whack!
The rest of her teammates followed suit to catch up with her.
When they finally reached the small encampment, one of the Crusaders who didn’t have his helmet on approached them and saluted.
“Sister Lieutenant!”
Xena dismounted from her Karfax and saluted back.
“Where is Brother High Lieutenant Cornelio?”
The Priest pointed to the large open tent.
“He’s over there with the other officers.”
Xena made her way to the tent. And when she reached the tent, she removed her helmet and then saluted.
“Excuse me, Brothers and Sisters. I am Sister Lieutenant Xena from the Southwestern Front Infantry Barracks. My team and I came here to answer your request for additional reinforcements.”
There were four Crusaders inside the tent and they surrounded a table with a map on top of it. And out of the four people there, she was only familiar with three of them.
The first one was Cornerlio, a dark-skinned Priest in his late 20s from the Heisen Chapter Temple, a High Lieutenant from the Infantry Division and he was wearing an Adamantite-Grade Crusader Armor set with x2 Magic Effects.
The second one was Chico, a white-skinned Priest in his late 20s from the Luxen Chapter Temple, a Lieutenant from the Infantry Division and and he was wearing an Adamantite-Grade Crusader Armor set with x1 Magic Effect.
The third one was Solvi, a pale-skinned Priestess in her late 20s from the Verglas Chapter Temple, a Lieutenant from the Air Division, and she was wearing an Orichalcum-Grade Crusader Armor set with x2 Magic Effects.
“Thank you for coming, Sister Lieutenant,” Cornelio said and then turned to the fourth officer that Xena wasn’t familiar with. “Sister, may I introduce you to Brother High Lieutenant Migos from the Exploratory Division.”
Migos was a tan-skinned Priest in his late 20s and he was wearing an Adamantite-Grade Crusader Armor set with x2 Magic Effects.
He saluted.
“It’s a pleasure to work with you, Sister Lieutenant. And may the God of Light watch over you,” he said with a Marbleamean accent and smiled.
Xena saluted back.
“It’s a pleasure to work with you also, Brother High Lieutenant. And may the God of Light watch over you as well,” she said and smiled.
“Okay, let’s continue on with the strategy meeting,” Cornelio said.
***
Kara and the rest of her companions were leading their Karfaxes to where the other Karfaxes are resting.
“Sister Squad Leader, do we have to set out tents?” Xander asked.
Some of their companions glanced at their surroundings while the others stared at Uliah.
Despite only having 5 single-person tents and 1 large open tent erected, there were actually 35 Crusaders participating in this Field Mission.
“We weren’t given any orders,” Uliah replied.
“We’re currently on a subjugation mission in the middle of the desert. I don’t think it would be a great idea to stand out,” Julien said.
“But aren’t we already standing out like a sore thumb? Just look at the Air Division flying in the sky,” Xander said.
“If you got a problem with it, tell that to the Officers,” Julien said.
“Brothers, this is normal,” Arman interjected. “For large Field Missions like this, the enemy’s base would be at least 5 miles away so as not to scare them away. And even if they do decide to run away, the Air Division monitoring their movements would immediately send out a flare.”
They finally reached the section where the other Karfaxes were "parked" and then returned to where the rest of the Crusaders were resting. And as they were heading back, Kara saw three familiar faces.
Carr was a white-skinned man with short red hair in his late teens from the Luxen Chapter Temple. He was wearing an Adamantite-Grade set with x2 Magic Effects.
Franz was a brown-skinned man with long brown hair in his early 20s from the Luxen Chapter Temple. He was wearing an Adamantite-Grade set with x1 Magic Effect.
And the third one was a white-skinned man with short black hair in his late teens from the Luxen Chapter Temple. He, too, was wearing an Adamantite-Grade set with x1 Magic Effect.
All of them weren’t wearing their helmets and were waiting for them.
And as they got closer, Carr smiled and waved his hand.
“Welcome, Brothers and Sisters. I thank the God of Light that I have the honor of sharing this Field Mission with you all.”
Uliah and the rest of her squad saluted.
“It’s a pleasure, Brother High Sergeant Carr,” she said and smiled.
“Is Sister Kara with you guys?”
A few of Kara’s companions whistled as they continued walking.
“Lovebirds~!” Julien said.
“Love is in the air even at battle, eh?” Xander said.
“She’s here~!” Uliah said as she grabbed Kara and shoved her in front of Carr.
Kara removed her helmet and saluted.
“Brother High Sergeant Carr, Brother High Sergeant Franz and Brother Crusader Jurgen!"
“Sister Crusader Kara,” Jurgen said as he let out an awkward smile and scratched the back of his head before moving away and talking to the new Crusaders who had just arrived.
Franz gave out an understanding smile before saluting.
“Sister Crusader Kara,” he said and then left as well to join Jurgen.
When Kara and Carr were finally alone, he let out a sigh and forced a smile.
“It’s nice to see. How are you doing?”
She nodded.
“I’m doing fine, Brother High Sergeant.”
“Come on, don’t be like that. It’s just us.”
“I’m fine, brother. Thank you for asking. How about you?”
“I’m doing fine as well.”
She nodded once again.
“That’s good to hear. I thank the God of Light for that.”
“I thank the God of Light that you’re fine as well.”
There was an awkward silence.
“You know... the enemy’s leader is only Rainbow Steel and we've got Brother Cornelio with us, so this would be an easy Field Mission for all of us. In fact, the only difficulty of this Field Mission was searching for their hideout. These heretics are seriously getting creative with their hideouts,” Carr said.
He and the other Crusaders have been here in the Sab’bia Desert searching for the enemy’s hideout for almost 3 weeks.
“Forgive me, brother, but the enemy’s leader is said to be a Demon-kin Necromancer with the [Undead Ascension] and is bound to have many minions, so we can’t let our guard down,” Kara said.
Carr nodded.
“That’s true. However, the Monkeigh Necromancer is reported to be a new one. As long as Brother Cornelio takes care of it, even you alone can take care of his minions.”
“Thank you for the vote of confidence, brother.”
“You’re welcome too,” he said and smiled.
She smiled back but didn’t say anything.
The awkward silence returned.
“Come to think of it, this will be our first Field Mission together, right?”
“Yes.”
“And this is your third or fourth Field Mission?”
“Third.”
“You’ve come a long way. I’m so proud of you,” Carr said and smiled.
Kara gave a quick and slight bow.
“Thank you. I couldn’t have done it without your help and the others’ help in training my Physical Arts.”
Carr waved his hand.
“Please, you don’t have to. It was a pleasure to help a fri--” he said and stopped talking.
Neither of them said anything and the awkward silence returned once more.
“You must be tired from your journey,” Carr said. “Want something to eat? We caught two Flappers last night and made some soup.”
“Thank you for the offer, brother, but I’m fine,” Kara said and then wore back her helmet. “Please forgive me, but I have to join my squad to wait for any additional orders.”
Carr nodded.
“I understand,” he said and smiled.
“Excuse me, Brother High Sergeant,” she said and then saluted.
Carr saluted back.
As Kara turned and walked away, he watched her back with a concerned look on his face.
