Chapter 275: Snape's Negative Mood
Chapter 275: Snape's Negative Mood
As expected, Snape did not disappoint.
All those who failed to submit their assignments were rewarded with three days of detention.
Not only did they have to complete their work in the chilly underground classroom, but they also had to deal with the pile of potion ingredients in the corner—a whole bucket's worth.
Though Snape didn't specify what they were, his sinister smile and the putrid stench permeating the classroom indicated that whatever was in the bucket was bound to be dreadful.
Michael and Ryan shared a relieved glance, grateful to have escaped this fate.
Just ten minutes earlier, they had managed to finish their Potions homework.
"Today, we will be learning how to brew a new potion: the Shrinking Solution," Snape announced in his usual drawling tone. "I have written out the steps, so read them carefully before collecting your ingredients. What are you all still waiting for?"
The students immediately rose from their seats and rushed towards the cabinets along the wall.
As per usual, Connor's desk held the necessary ingredients, but unlike before, there was only one set instead of a full bag.
This meant that Kyle couldn't mooch off her this time.
Kyle glanced at Snape and found the professor looking right back at him, his eyes filled with mockery.
"Stingy!" Kyle muttered under his breath as he got up and headed towards the cabinets.
Because he was late, by the time he arrived, all that was left were a few broken daisy roots and two or three squashed wrinkled figs.
"All ingredients are limited," Snape's voice carried from the front of the classroom. "So you'd best get it right the first time; there won't be any do-overs!"
"Before the end of class, the person with the worst potion will have twenty points deducted. Perhaps this will motivate you to take the brewing process seriously," Snape added, his eyes never leaving Kyle.
There was no need to guess who would end up with the worst potion—the student without any ingredients, of course.
"I got too comfortable," Kyle sighed. He had grown accustomed to relying on Connor's extra supplies and never expected Snape to pull a stunt like this.
"Didn't get any ingredients? Well, here, use these," a voice suddenly offered.
A hand reached out, and in Kyle's eyes, it seemed to be bathed in a faint, hopeful halo.
Michael placed a tray on Kyle's desk. "You know how my potions always go wrong. I always get extra, just in case."
"Thanks, you're a lifesaver!" Kyle exclaimed.
"No problem," Michael replied, pointing to a piece of parchment on the desk. "You helped us finish those Potions assignments at lunch, so we're even."
As Kyle resolved his ingredient issue, Snape's mood visibly soured. He glared at Kyle, about to say something, when Connor suddenly swapped her cloth bag with the tray.
"This leech juice looks great. Can I use it?" she asked.
"Of course," Kyle nodded.
Snape's forehead visibly pulsed with anger—it was clear he disagreed with the assessment that the leech juice in the tray was superior.
How dare they! The ingredients in the cabinet had been prepared by the students serving detention, and there was no way they could compare to the materials he had carefully selected! But as he watched Kyle and Connor begin chopping the daisy roots, he could only take a few deep breaths and forcibly suppress the anger boiling within him.
Snape's mood was taking a turn for the worse... and he intended to spread his foul temper.
"Wrinkled fig skins are too thick, Hufflepuff loses three points."
...
After circling the room, an still-irritated Snape stopped in front of a Slytherin student.
The student proudly lifted his chin, awaiting praise from his Head of House. His potion was a light green color, very close to the standard answer.
Usually, he would have been awarded extra points.
But the next second...
"A little leech juice is enough, why did you put so much? Slytherin loses two points!"
Yes... The still-irritated Snape even started deducting points from his own house!
Now, everyone was in a bad mood.
...
"What's wrong with Professor Snape?!"
During dinner, Kyle even heard students discussing this incident.
"He actually deducted twenty points from Slytherin... twenty points!"
The others didn't believe it at first.
After all, everyone at Hogwarts knew that the Potions master was most biased towards Slytherin. Even if one of them blew up a crucible, they would only be detained and not have points deducted.
"This joke isn't funny at all."
At the Gryffindor table, Fred glanced at the excited Jordan Lee beside him and scoffed, "Or maybe you're still asleep and misheard points added as points deducted."
"I'm not joking!"
Jordan Lee said seriously, "This has gone viral, don't you know?"
"Wait, are you serious?" George put down his cup.
"I swear!"
Jordan Lee pointed towards the Slytherin table, "Or you can go take a walk over there, they're talking about it too."
Fred suddenly became interested and asked, "When did this happen?"
Harry and Ron also put down their cutlery and listened intently.
It was unbelievable that Snape would deduct points from Slytherin, just like how unimaginable it would be for Hermione to forget the common room password.
"It was during Potions class this afternoon." Jordan Lee excitedly explained, "A few third-year Slytherins were talking, and I just happened to walk past and overheard them."
"I thought I misheard at first, but then I realized that Slytherin's hourglass of points really had twenty fewer points than before! And they only had Potions class in the afternoon."
"Whoa..." Harry drew in a cold breath.
"You said third-year, right?" Fred frowned, "Which house takes classes with Slytherin?"
"Hufflepuff."
Jordan Lee casually replied, "The news first spread from these two houses."
"Kyle!" Fred and George said simultaneously.
Although they didn't know what had happened, their intuition told them that this incident must have had something to do with Kyle.
Based on their years of experience, whenever something abnormal happened at Hogwarts, it was usually safe to blame it on Kyle.
While it might not be him a hundred percent of the time, at least eight out of ten times it would be accurate.
"If only we were born a year later."
"And then sorted into Hufflepuff."
Fred and George looked up at the Hufflepuff table, their eyes filled with longing.
Their biggest regret was not being in the same year as Kyle.
That would have been so much more exciting than their current situation.
