Chapter 274: The Worst Timetable at Hogwarts
Chapter 274: The Worst Timetable at Hogwarts
In just half a lecture, Professor Kettleburn managed to change everyone's initial impression of Care of Magical Creatures class.
Especially after getting up close with the Bowtruckles, the students discovered that these little creatures were truly fascinating.
They were simple and straightforward magical creatures, and they didn't hide their emotions. When presented with a snail, they would happily extend their long arms and swing from the clothes of the person holding the treat.
Or they would scurry into a young wizard's robe pocket and enjoy a delicious snack out of everyone's sight.
The students soon lined up... each wanting to spend more time playing with the Bowtruckles.
To ensure that everyone got a chance to interact with the Bowtruckles, Professor Kettleburn had to set a rule that each person could only have two minutes of playtime.
Additionally, he brought in a new batch of Bowtruckles from the Forbidden Forest, roughly around twenty of them.
After all, the previous batch had already had their fill, but there were still dozens of students waiting in line to feed them.
If he didn't increase the number, those at the back of the line would miss out on the fun.
While the students were queuing, Professor Kettleburn stood beside the line and said loudly,
"Because Bowtruckles never choose to inhabit trees that don't possess magical qualities."
"This means that the trees they protect are usually suitable for wand-making."
"As a result, these little creatures are highly favored by wand makers... They don't need to bother with identifying trees; they just need to look for Bowtruckles."
...
Professor Kettleburn's lecture was detailed and engaging.
And he patiently answered the students' questions.
"Professor, what would happen if you placed a Bowtruckle in an ordinary forest?" asked a Gryffindor student from the back of the line.
"It would still live in the trees, just not as comfortably," Professor Kettleburn replied. "It would be like forcing you to leave your warm and cozy bed to sleep on top of the Astronomy Tower. I believe no one would find that more comfortable."
"Then, Professor, if there were five Bowtruckles and six juniper trees, which tree would they abandon?"
"They would abandon all but the oldest tree,"
The professor explained, "They usually stay together until there are enough members in the group, then they'll choose another tree."
"What if all the juniper trees were the same?"
"Then they'd choose the closest one..."
Gradually, more and more students began to ask questions, each one more challenging than the last. Some were even troublemakers, asking how many Bowtruckles a hungry dragon could eat in one bite.
But Professor Kettleburn remained patient and good-natured.
"Depending on the size of the dragon's mouth and the number of Bowtruckles on a tree, probably around twelve.
However, typically, Bowtruckles are not on a dragon's menu because they have very little meat, and their agility makes them difficult to catch.
You can't expect them to just stand on a tree and wait for a dragon to come by."
The students applauded, and the student who asked the question clapped the loudest, his hands turning red from the enthusiasm.
And just like that, the class ended.
Professor Kettleburn approached Kyle and asked, "Did you find the class boring?"
Kyle shook his head. "No, it was very interesting."
"Honestly, it doesn't matter.
"He told me quite a bit about you and mentioned that you helped deliver a Boomslang," the professor continued.
Kyle let out an awkward chuckle.
"Newt's socially awkward, so why is he so talkative?" he thought to himself. To avoid any strange titles, he quickly shook his head and said, "It was all Mr. Scamander's doing. I only helped a little."
But Professor Kettleburn acted as if he hadn't heard and muttered to himself, "In that case, the Care of Magical Creatures class for third-years might indeed be a bit too simple for you."
"Conveniently, I received a letter from Professor McGonagall before class, and you've chosen quite a few courses, haven't you?"
Kyle nodded.
"Go ahead and attend your other class." Professor Kettleburn patted him on the shoulder. Then he shook his head and muttered,
"It's a shame that the winged horse with an eagle's head gave birth to her foals a few days earlier... With your help, I would have had an easier time as well."
As he spoke, he rubbed his chest... There were three neat white scratches on his jacket, which seemed to be made by the winged horse with an eagle's head, but the material of the jacket was unknown.
Kyle's mouth twitched, and he quickly changed the subject, "Professor, where's your wooden leg?"
"Oh, I left it on the Hebridean Islands. Those big guys can be quite a disaster when they're in a temper."
...
After bidding farewell to Professor Kettleburn, the two began walking towards the castle.
On their way back, Connor asked curiously, "So, you can also help deliver magical beasts?"
"Don't mention it if you want to remain my good friend!"
Kyle replied irritably, "And it was Newt who helped, I merely assisted him!"
Seeing Kyle's gloomy expression, Connor's eyes curved into crescent moons as she covered her mouth and giggled.
The next class was History of Magic.
There wasn't much to say about Professor Binns' class. As soon as he started droning on about dull dates and names, many young wizards began dozing off.
This had been the case for the past two years, and it continued unchanged, with the number of sleepy students only increasing.
Within five minutes of the start of class, a large portion of the students had their heads on their desks.
And the students seemed to have evolved a remarkable ability... No matter how noisy they were in the dormitory, they became incredibly quiet and slept peacefully once they entered the History of Magic classroom.
It was as if the desks in this class held some magical power.
After class, everyone quickly regained their alertness and left the classroom with renewed vigor, heading towards the Great Hall for their meal.
At the entrance of the Great Hall, Kyle also ran into the Weasley twins.
They seemed to be discussing something, but when they saw Kyle, they quickly ran off.
"Do you know what they were talking about?" Kyle asked.
Connor shook her head, her face still bearing the marks from where she had slept on her book.
"Strange..." Kyle muttered, watching their retreating figures as he walked into the Great Hall, perplexed.
...
The afternoon brought two consecutive periods of Snape's Potions class.
On the first day of the new school year, having History of Magic in the morning and Potions in the afternoon... One would be hard-pressed to find a worse timetable at Hogwarts.
As they left the common room, apart from Connor, the others' expressions were less than enthusiastic, especially those who hadn't finished their homework. They could barely walk steadily.
