Chapter 272: The Second Time Raikage Got the Short End of the Stick
Chapter 272: The Second Time Raikage Got the Short End of the Stick
"Ino, take the client and fall back a bit. Kakashi and I will hold them off," Obito said hastily as he saw the approaching Kumo-nin.
Ino Yamanaka was the weakest among them, and Obito subconsciously assigned her a relatively safer task.
Ino glanced at Kakashi, who nodded in agreement. It was impossible to ignore the client and focus solely on the battle. Having Ino, the weakest of the group, support them from a distance while keeping an eye on the client was the best option for now.
With their plan decided, Ino retreated with the frightened client to a safe distance while still maintaining her focus and chakra for any necessary support.
"Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu!"
Obito swiftly formed the necessary hand seals, gathering chakra in his throat to convert it to fire-natured chakra. He then exhaled a massive amount of flames that formed into a three-meter fireball, hurling it towards the oncoming Kumo-nin.
Although the Fireball Jutsu had its drawbacks, its low chakra cost and high damage output made it an excellent opening move. In a situation where they knew little about their opponents, using the Fireball Jutsu as a probing attack was a wise choice.
Shwish! Shwish!!
Kakashi threw a barrage of shuriken to distract and disrupt their opponents, making it harder for them to dodge.
Instead of confronting the attack head-on, the four Kumo-nin dispersed and used Body Flicker Techniques to evade the fireball while drawing their weapons to block Kakashi's shuriken. They then continued their advance.
"Their movements are impressive. They're not weak," Kakashi remarked as he exhaled a breath, feeling the pressure of the situation.
Although he lacked an identification technique to directly discern their chakra and ninjutsu, Kakashi could tell from their reactions to his attacks that these opponents were not to be underestimated. None of them were genin.
However, this was within Kakashi's expectations. After all, they were up against a team led by the Raikage's candidate.
The last time they encountered the Raikage's candidate, just two Kumo-nin had pushed them to the brink. If it weren't for Might Guy and Obito's limit-breaking abilities, he might not have lasted until his moment of clarity.
Gripping his white-fang dagger tightly, Kakashi strategized in his mind.
If his teammate had been Might Guy, he would have had Obito provide covering fire while they charged together.
But with Ino as his partner, it was clear she lacked Guy's overwhelming power to swiftly take down their enemies. While her brute strength was impressive, it was useless unless she could land a hit.
"Let's see what they're capable of first. If there are no jounin among them, we should be fine," Kakashi said as the enemy drew closer, deciding to test their strength.
"Lightning Breath, Full Concentration!"
Kakashi inhaled a large amount of oxygen, enhancing his physical abilities. Chakra gathered in the lower half of his body and rapidly underwent nature transformation, activating the cells in his legs.
Kakashi then dashed towards the apparent leader, Motem. If the leader wasn't a jounin, then the others certainly weren't either.
Clang!
Kakashi's white-fang dagger clashed with Motem's longsword, creating a loud metallic collision.
"Your speed is impressive, but it's not enough to surpass my sensory abilities," Motem said as he pushed Kakashi back with a burst of strength. He then gathered a large amount of chakra in his hand, transforming his longsword into a lightning sword and lunged at Kakashi.
Although Motem was a sensory ninja, his strength was that of a true jounin, even if he wasn't particularly exceptional among them.
At that moment, a burning kunai flew towards Motem, forcing him to abandon his attack and dodge the fiery projectile.
Kakashi, utilizing the speed boost from Lightning Breath, returned to Obito's side, his expression grave. "That Kumo-nin in the lead is likely a jounin. The other three could be chunin, but there might be another jounin among them as well."
Hearing Kakashi's speculation, Obito felt a headache coming on. He had firsthand experience of the prowess of Kumo-nin jounin. Even with his two tomoe Sharingan and Might Guy's assistance, using the second gate of the Eight Gates, they had fought a grueling battle.
One jounin was manageable, and he and Kakashi could handle it, even if they couldn't defeat it. But if there were three chunin as well, they would be overwhelmed. He couldn't expect Ino to take on three chunin by herself. That was simply not feasible.
"Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu!"
Obito desperately used Fireball Jutsu to stall their opponents, gradually retreating.
"We're outmatched in terms of combat power," Kakashi thought, his mind racing to find a solution to their predicament.
As he recalled the Flying Thunder God Kunai in his ninja tool pouch and the ongoing standoff between Minato and the Raikage's candidate, Kakashi hit upon the only viable solution he could think of.
Although it wasn't ideal to rely on others, Kakashi couldn't deny that Minato was their best hope for resolving this difficult situation.
At that moment, Kakashi's gaze met with Minato's, who had been keeping a watchful eye on the situation. Understanding passed between them, and Kakashi decided to put his trust in Minato.
Kakashi drew the Flying Thunder God Kunai and threw it at Motem.
Since it was a kunai thrown by Kakashi, Motem didn't pay it much mind and easily sidestepped to avoid it, not noticing the Flying Thunder God seal on the kunai.
Whoosh!
Minato used the Flying Thunder God Technique to appear behind Motem. He stabbed the Flying Thunder God Kunai into Motem's body and quickly imprinted the Flying Thunder God seal on him, sending him hurtling towards the Fourth Raikage.
The Fourth Raikage, caught off guard by the hidden Flying Thunder God Kunai, eyed Minato warily. He quickly caught Motem and removed the kunai, tossing it aside before signaling for a Kumo-nin medic to treat his wounds.
For the Fourth Raikage, there were two people in his squad whom he cared deeply about. The first was Killer B, who, although not a blood brother, was as close as one. The second was Motem, a rare sensory talent and someone who was deeply loyal to him.
While the Fourth Raikage would feel regret and sadness if any of his other squad members perished, Motem's death would evoke a much stronger reaction. He would be furious.
"You're to cease your advance and stay put by Bee's side," the Fourth Raikage ordered sternly.
"Yes, sir!" Motem acknowledged the Fourth Raikage's command.
Having incapacitated Motem with a single strike, Minato kept his focus on the Fourth Raikage, ensuring he didn't use his speed to launch a sudden assault on Obito and the others.
Seeing Minato neutralize the jounin threat, Kakashi breathed a sigh of relief. He brandished his white-fang dagger and burst forward with enhanced speed, slicing at the nearest Kumo-nin.
"Fire Style: Fire Breath, Full Concentration!"
With the situation at a critical juncture, Obito set aside his reservations and activated his two tomoe Sharingan. He entered the full concentration state of Fire Style: Fire Breath, pushing his abilities to their current peak. Wielding a kunai, he single-handedly held off two Kumo-nin.
"Sharingan!" Upon seeing Obito's blood-red eyes, the two Kumo-nin immediately recognized the bloodline limit of the Uchiha clan from Konoha. They abandoned their plan to engage Ino and instead focused their efforts on taking down Obito.
But Obito wasn't worried. Since Kakashi only had one enemy, once he took care of his opponent, he could help Obito, and the two Cloud ninjas wouldn't last long.
Before Kakashi could finish off his enemy and come to Obito's aid, Nohara Rin noticed the temporary safety of their surroundings and ran towards the besieged Obito.
Both Obito and the Cloud ninjas simultaneously sensed Nohara Rin's arrival.
"This Uchiha is tricky. Hold him off, and I'll capture his companion to threaten him," one of the Cloud ninjas said decisively.
He figured Nohara Rin's abilities were weak, and if she wasn't helping with ninjutsu by now, she must not be very useful.
Without waiting for his companion's response, the Cloud ninja charged out.
The other Cloud ninja muttered a string of Cloud curses under his breath but knew this was their best chance at victory. If they continued fighting normally, their defeat was only a matter of time.
Watching the Cloud ninja rush straight at Nohara Rin, Obito realized that his opponent had grown complacent. So, he only used his peripheral vision to observe that side while focusing on fighting the remaining Cloud ninja.
Originally, he was at a disadvantage fighting two-on-one, let alone one-on-one. Instantly, several bloody gashes appeared on the remaining Cloud ninja.
"Hang in there!" The departing Cloud ninja silently cheered on his teammate and threw a punch at Nohara Rin's head, intending to knock her out.
"Super Strength Punch!"
Nohara Rin concentrated a large amount of chakra into her arm and then exploded, swinging her slender fist to meet the Cloud ninja's punch.
Since it was her first real battle, Nohara Rin worried that her strength wouldn't be enough, so she directly used half of the chakra in her body for this punch.
Looking at Nohara Rin's slender, white arms, the Cloud ninja felt extreme disdain. How could this little girl, whose thighs were thinner than his arms, think she could compete with him when he had been rigorously training in taijutsu?
Bang!
A figure flew backwards at extreme speed and slammed into a tree, breaking it.
Watching his teammate get knocked away, the Cloud ninja fighting Obito was stunned. "Is that how you try to capture someone?"
His teammate was stunned, and the Cloud ninja who got punched was even more bewildered. He couldn't believe that his strength had lost to a girl who looked frail and thin.
But the intense pain and blood coming from his palm reminded him that this was the truth. He found it incredibly difficult to even move his fingers, and he felt like all the bones in his hand were broken.
Bang!
Obito seized the opportunity and kicked the remaining Cloud ninja away with a Leaf Hurricane.
The Cloud ninja fighting Kakashi already had several exaggerated wounds with blood gushing out, and his condition was terrible.
Just as the Fourth Raikage continued his assault on Minato, Minato once again used the Flying Thunder God Technique.
The Fourth Raikage quickly looked around. He had memorized all the positions and could use his speed to attack Minato at any time.
But another unexpected thing happened. This time, Minato appeared directly next to Killer B and held a kunai to his head.
"That kunai shouldn't have the Flying Thunder God seal on it," the Fourth Raikage said, his expression darkening.
"Could it be that he can also imprint the technique on people?" The Fourth Raikage thought of Motem, who had been injured by Minato, and suddenly realized a possibility.
The Flying Thunder God kunai had been pulled out of Motem, and only Motem and Minato had been in direct contact.
Killer B had incredibly fast reaction speed and decisive action. In an instant, he pointed his knife behind him.
Unlike the Fourth Raikage, who had been in the middle of an attack, Killer B had been in a constant state of readiness, and his limit-pushing reaction gave him a chance to counter.
"If you want both of us to be hurt, then come on. I'm not afraid," Killer B said calmly without turning his head.
Although he was young, Killer B understood the cruelty of the ninja world, and he believed his big brother would avenge him. By then, an injured Minato Namikaze wouldn't be his big brother's opponent.
"Although you're an opponent, I admire you. Your reactions and decisiveness are enough to be called a ninja killer," Minato praised.
From seeing through the Flying Thunder God Technique at the beginning to now reacting to his attacks, Minato believed that Killer B would have a place in the future ninja world.
"Why don't we all stop and take a step back? We don't have conflicting missions, and we're not slaughtering each other on the battlefield," Minato suggested.
He didn't intend to kill Killer B because that would enrage the Fourth Raikage, whose strength was too powerful. If the Fourth Raikage went on a rampage now, Minato wouldn't be able to protect Obito and the others.
Previously, he hadn't killed Motem but had only seriously injured him and thrown him aside to set up the next attack and to avoid ruining any chance of negotiation.
He saw great potential in Killer B, Obito, and Kakashi, and he truly believed that once they grew up, it was uncertain who would be stronger.
The Fourth Raikage thought for a moment and also suggested pausing the battle, letting the three Cloud ninjas support each other as they returned, no longer attacking.
Killer B was willing to trade his life to injure Minato, but the Fourth Raikage didn't want his good brother to die like this. Even if he could kill the injured Minato afterward, he didn't want to.
Minato and the Fourth Raikage's words were like suddenly pressing a pause button. With the enemies no longer attacking, Minato's side also stopped, and Obito and the others stood together to protect the client.
"Minato Namikaze, I'll remember you. You're impressive," the Fourth Raikage said in a deep voice.
Before meeting Minato, he had only suffered losses at the hands of that Mist ninja who could also use Lightning Release Chakra Mode. Now, this was the second time he had been bested.
"I won't forget you either," Minato said seriously.
He had a premonition that this wouldn't be the last time they faced each other.
With Cloud and Leaf in a state of war, their strengths meant that they might meet again on the battlefield.
In the end, the two groups went their separate ways. The Fourth Raikage took his men to heal their wounds, while Minato and the others continued their escort mission.
Because of this encounter, as soon as the mission was over, Minato quickly took Obito and the others back to Fire Country to prevent another dangerous situation.
