Chapter 271: Let Me Issue You All Innocent Civilian Certificates
Chapter 271: Let Me Issue You All Innocent Civilian Certificates
Johannes broke into a cold sweat.
Unlike the other pirates who had only read about Top War’s victories in newspapers, he had watched the live broadcast alongside the Alliance Chief. He had seen firsthand how, during those legendary battles between infamous pirates and the Navy, two figures had stood out—Monkey D. Luffy, and one man from the Navy:
Lucius Kro.
The man who inherited everything from the legendary pirate, Shanks!
“What kind of joke is this? Why would someone like you even come to this island?! Wait—does that mean you’re the Navy Commander stationed here?!”
Johannes’ eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.
Had the Navy gone blind, or was the World Government simply overflowing with talent?
How could someone this powerful still only be a Commander?!
“Innocent civilian? Do you have your certificate?”
Kuro turned his gaze toward him.
“Certificate? What certificate?”
“You don’t have one? No problem. I’ll issue one for you. From now on, you’re an innocent civilian.”
“Really?”
Johannes’ heart leapt with hope. Was this man actually an idiot, so easily believing his lies?
Looks like even powerful men have their flaws.
Just then, a wisp of black light flashed across the sky.
Boom!
Black Gun pierced through the so-called “innocent civilian’s” body, its immense momentum carving straight into the tavern. In one shot, it blew a massive hole through the building.
“Use your death to obtain this certificate. Dead pirates are the only true innocent civilians. Idiot.”
Kuro said coolly, then added, “Return now, Klah. I can’t guarantee you won’t get caught in the crossfire.”
Lida had already jumped to his side, but Klah remained in his hybrid beast form, still reveling in the slaughter.
Back then, these pirates would’ve been untouchable for him. But now, with his strength, as long as he had time, he could wipe them all out. It would cost some physical energy, but that was all.
Who dares interrupt Officer Klah’s massacre of pirates?!
Boom!
A Longsword descended beside him, impaling a pirate through the head and leaving a small crater on the ground.
Klah snapped back to reality, his eyes lingering on the pirate’s gruesome fate. He morphed back into human form, adjusted his glasses, and obediently said, “Understood, Mr. Kuro.”
Using Moonstep, he dashed across the air and returned to Kuro’s side, standing quietly behind him.
“Captain Johannes!”
A group of pirates stared at the gaping hole in the tavern. Inside, Black Gun had pierced completely through the building, protruding halfway outside. There, impaled by the attack, Johannes’ body twitched violently.
“Captain Johannes has failed!”
“Run! Those Navy men are monsters!”
The pirates screamed in fear, scattering like leaves.
“Not so fast,” Kuro loomed over them from the rooftop, his voice icy. “I’ll issue you all innocent civilian certificates too!”
He flicked his finger slightly, then lowered his arms.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Weapons rained from the sky, slamming into the ground.
Black Gun’s relentless barrage left massive craters wherever it struck. Blades tore through the battlefield, severing heads from bodies with ease.
There was no need to use the island’s rocks or structures. This was his future station, after all. Black Gun and blades alone would suffice. This Aoe carnage was more than enough to send these pirates to “collect their certificates.”
The aerial bombardment lasted nearly a minute before ceasing.
The town square was now a landscape of craters. Weapons and Black Gun projectiles jutted from the ground, surrounded by bloodied corpses or pools of gore. The force of the impacts had reduced many bodies to unrecognizable pulps.
“No matter how many times I see this, it’s still breathtaking,” Klah remarked, regaining his composure.
Only someone like Mr. Kuro, with unparalleled physical strength, could recklessly wield abilities like this so soon after consuming a Devil Fruit. Compared to that, the only difference between himself and the second stage of power was just a matter of physical might.
“Ahhh!”
“Don’t move!”
Suddenly, a scream echoed from inside the rubble. Moments later, a pirate emerged, dragging a civilian at knifepoint.
“Let me leave, or this civilian dies! You Navy types care about civilian casualties, right?!”
The pirate sneered confidently.
The Navy always acted like they valued civilian lives. Even if this guy was a monster, he probably thought the same.
“Fool,” Lida muttered from the rooftop.
“What did you say?!”
The pirate started to rage, but suddenly felt a sharp pain in his chest. He looked down in disbelief as a spike of earth burst through his torso, blood spraying before his eyes.
“Ahh—”
His mouth opened in a silent gasp. His grip loosened, the knife clattering to the ground. Then he collapsed, lifeless.
“Hahah—”
The civilian, a woman, broke free as the terrifying pirate behind her slumped over. She snatched up the dropped weapon and furiously hacked at the corpse.
As if unaware the pirate was already dead, she kept swinging, chopping until the head was a mangled pulp.
“Hey, he’s already dead. You’re safe now. No need to keep going,” Klah said, jumping down from the rooftop.
The woman seemed not to hear. She kept striking, tears streaming down her face.
“Hey—” Klah started, but the woman suddenly dropped her weapon with a clang, sinking to her knees as she covered her face.
“My husband… my family… they’re all gone!”
“Why? Why didn’t you come sooner?! You’re Navy, aren’t you? Isn’t it your responsibility to stop pirates? You’re so strong—why didn’t you come earlier?!”
She turned on Klah, tears streaming, her voice raw with fury.
“Listen, woman—”
Klah’s temple throbbed, anger rising. After all this effort to save the town, was this his reward?
“Enough, Nedy!”
A raspy shout cut through the air.
An elderly man on crutches emerged from the shadows, followed by a group of ragged civilians.
“The Navy did come before, but they couldn’t beat these pirates. Don’t take it out on them, Nedy. This island wasn’t even a Navy station until now. No one is to blame.”
“Town Mayor…”
Nedy’s face twisted with inner turmoil. She stood and bowed to Klah. “I’m sorry. I was just… so overwhelmed. My husband… he’s gone.”
“I understand,” Klah replied, pushing his glasses up as he surveyed the carnage around them. “Even my past self, without purpose, wouldn’t have done something this extreme. This is inexcusable.”
Back then, even when he was a pirate, he never imagined doing things like this. Strong men had their pride, after all. Looking back now, that “strength” was rather questionable, but in the East Blue, everyone understood.
He considered his past full of unsavory secrets, but even in those days, he only targeted Navy men.
Never innocent lives.
