Chapter 27: What to Do When the Teacher is Too Cunning
Chapter 27: What to Do When the Teacher is Too Cunning
After completing her tutoring session, Mu Yue did not return to the Southern Forest but instead went to her home in the main city.
Mu Yue whipped up a quick stir-fry for dinner before heading out for a walk. After all, friendship wouldn't come knocking on her door if she stayed at home.
During her stroll, Mu Yue eventually ran into Minato and Kushina at a nearby park.
The couple was seated on a park bench, enjoying the evening breeze and chatting leisurely.
"Yuhsheng," Minato greeted Mu Yue after spotting her.
"Are you also out for a walk?" he asked.
Mu Yue nodded and took a seat on a nearby bench. "Just finished dinner. Thought I'd walk it off."
"Yuhsheng, I heard from Minato that you're a teacher at the Ninja Academy?" Kushina asked curiously.
In her circle of friends, none had ever been a teacher at the Ninja Academy.
"Yes, I just started this year," Mu Yue replied with a smile.
"You just started this year, and you're already making waves," Minato said, a hint of surprise in his voice. "I heard from the Third Hokage that your teaching skills are exceptional. He even wanted to hire you as a tutor for his family."
"To receive such high praise from the Third Hokage in your first year, your teaching achievements must be truly remarkable," Kushina added, her eyes narrowing in suspicion as she glanced at Minato.
"Oh, it's mostly due to the hard work of my students," Mu Yue humbly replied. "It's Kakashi who's truly remarkable. At such a young age, he's already become a jonin and a valuable asset to the village."
"Ahem, but my Minato here is the strongest!" Kushina proudly proclaimed, a playful glint in her eye.
"But I'm also a jonin!" she laughed.
Mu Yue feigned surprise and praised, "Then, the Whirlpool Jonin must be incredibly formidable as well."
"You sure know how to sweet-talk, Yuhsheng," Kushina said, her eyes softening as she looked at Mu Yue with growing approval. If only her good sister, Mikoto Uchiha, hadn't already been married, she would have loved to introduce them.
Look at him—so handsome, just like Minato, and equally talented, earning the praise of the Third Hokage himself.
The three chatted for a while longer before Mu Yue politely took her leave.
It wouldn't do to overstay her welcome, and besides, she knew the couple enjoyed their walks together. She would bide her time and slowly work her way into their good graces.
...
The next day, Mu Yue continued training Obito, Might Guy, and Ebisu until noon before heading to Hiruzen's house to teach Asuma. She took him to the riverbank they had visited the day before.
"I'm too tired to train today," Asuma declared, leaning against a tree and making himself comfortable as if he were about to take a nap.
He had made up his mind that no matter what Mu Yue did or said to provoke him, he would remain unmoved.
"Feeling sleepy?" Mu Yue asked, a gentle smile on her face as she regarded Asuma.
Her smile was warm and soothing, a far cry from the stern expression his grandfather often wore, but Asuma couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss.
"Yeah, I didn't sleep well last night. Is that a problem?" Asuma retorted defiantly.
To his surprise, Mu Yue nodded in agreement. "You're right. Today, the sun is shining just right, and the breeze is gentle. It's the perfect weather for a nap."
Mu Yue stretched leisurely and leaned against the tree, mirroring Asuma's relaxed posture. "Being a tutor is great. I can just lie here and sleep, and when I wake up, I'll have earned ten thousand ryo."
With that, she closed her eyes and rested her head against the tree, seemingly ready to doze off.
"Wait, did you say ten thousand ryo?" Asuma's eyes widened in shock, and he turned to Mu Yue with a questioning look.
"What else could it be? It's the fee for my tutoring services, of course," Mu Yue replied, opening her eyes and proceeding to spin a tale.
"Do you think I work for free? Even if the Hokage hired a tutor, he would have to pay! My rates are very high. For teaching you, it's twenty-five thousand ryo per hour, so naturally, it would be one hundred thousand ryo for four hours of lessons a day."
"Is your tongue made of gold? That's an outrageous fee!" Asuma exclaimed, shocked to learn that Mu Yue earned twenty-five thousand ryo for each hour they spent together.
After all, his monthly allowance was only fifty thousand ryo, and he was already considered to be on the higher end.
Yet, Mu Yue earned the equivalent of his monthly allowance in just two hours!
"You can go ask around about me, Yuhsheng Mu Yue, and you'll know if I'm worth the price," Mu Yue said calmly.
"But I've never heard of you before," Asuma said, feeling like he was being scammed.
"That's because I only started teaching after you graduated," Mu Yue said and closed her eyes again, ready to fall asleep.
Asuma's heart sank at the thought of losing this precious tutoring time, especially considering the exorbitant rate of twenty-five thousand ryo per hour.
"Wait, don't sleep yet! Let's start training," Asuma hastily called out, afraid that Mu Yue might fall asleep and he wouldn't be able to wake her up.
"Weren't you the one who said you were tired and wanted to sleep because you didn't rest well last night? So, are you no longer tired now?" Mu Yue asked, opening her eyes and smiling at Asuma.
Seeing the look on Mu Yue's face, Asuma knew he had been tricked. This guy hadn't been sleeping at all!
But Asuma was also helpless. After all, this was a twenty-five-thousand-ryo-per-hour tutoring session. If Mu Yue fell asleep here, Asuma wouldn't be able to sleep tonight either.
"Never mind, I'm feeling refreshed now. Let's begin the training," Asuma said, his face darkening.
He decided that he would report this to his mother; hiring such an expensive tutor was a waste of money when there were jonin teachers available.
"Alright then, today's training will be the same as yesterday—chakra control. Today's goal is to stay afloat on the water for fifteen minutes," Mu Yue said as she stood up and smiled.
The training resumed with Asuma striving to stay above the water while Mu Yue disturbed him with Water Release techniques from the shore.
Asuma was just as motivated as he had been the day before, but this time, his motivation wasn't to prove his father wrong; it was the outrageous fee Mu Yue had quoted for her tutoring services.
That evening, during dinner, Asuma immediately reported the incident to Biwako, complaining about how Sarutobi Hiruzen had wasted money on a tutor who charged twenty-five thousand ryo per hour.
Biwako was also taken aback by the exorbitant fee. Ten thousand ryo for four hours was equivalent to the reward for some B-rank missions!
"Hmm? Are you talking about Yuhsheng? That can't be right. His tutoring fee is two thousand ryo per hour," Sarutobi Hiruzen said, pausing for a moment before laughing.
"Two thousand ryo?" Asuma looked at Sarutobi Hiruzen with suspicion.
"Of course, it's two thousand. Where did you hear it's twenty-five thousand?" Sarutobi Hiruzen affirmed.
Seeing the look on his father's face, Asuma knew he had been deceived by Mu Yue.
"Damn you, Yuhsheng Mu Yue!" Asuma cursed inwardly, channeling his frustration into his appetite. He ate voraciously, resolving that no matter what, he wouldn't fall for Mu Yue's tricks again next week.
