Chapter 269: The Report
Chapter 269: The Report
After a hearty meal of grilled meat and a short rest, it was 1 p.m. when Chen Chuan returned to the training ground.
Zheng Tongtong approached him, holding a new sword in her hand. It was a specially designed teaching sword, still in the form of a heavy-backed sword, with a dark and mysterious blade that didn't reveal the material it was made from, but it was clearly not light.
Standing in front of Chen Chuan, she said, "Junior Chen, this sword is very heavy. Be careful."
Chen Chuan nodded.
Zheng Tongtong gave a solemn reminder, and without delay, she spun in place, using the momentum of her turning body to swing the sword with a loud whoosh, slashing horizontally.
Chen Chuan immediately raised his sword to block, applying the techniques he had learned before. But as the two swords made contact, he felt an incredibly powerful force coming from her sword, and the previous techniques were not enough to withstand it.
Since he couldn't move, in that instant, he instinctively mobilized his altered tissues that were not within the range of the force techniques to resist.
However, before he could do so, under the pressure of the force, he had no choice but to retreat backward. In that moment, his entire body felt like it was about to float away, and the Snow Lady Sword in his hand trembled violently.
Zheng Tongtong planted her sword in the ground and asked, "How is it, Junior Chen? Can you handle it?"
Chen Chuan exhaled and returned to his original position. "No problem, let's go again."
Zheng Tongtong, without any courtesy, spun in place and slashed again. Chen Chuan was pushed back once more, but this time, he felt like he had grasped a trick.
By the third slash, he only retreated two steps, and by the fourth, he only took half a step back. From the fifth slash onwards, he was able to stand his ground without retreating, just as he had before.
He realized that the force technique Teacher Zheng had taught him was just a basic framework, and the altered tissues he summoned were only in the general direction. How they changed and filled in the details was all based on this foundation. With more altered tissues around him being mobilized, even with such powerful force, he was gradually able to withstand it.
This was thanks to the altered tissues throughout his body, cultivated through the Zhou Yuan technique, which were originally present there. When needed, they could be summoned, so performing this feat was not difficult for him.
For those lacking altered tissues, they would need special stimulation and adjustments, often getting stuck at this step for a while, not as smooth as Chen Chuan's progress.
Teacher Zheng hadn't expected Chen Chuan to adjust so quickly. He nodded in approval, acknowledging that this student indeed had a solid foundation, with comprehensive coverage of altered tissues. He had taught many students, and only a few, no more than three, had adapted as quickly as Chen Chuan, and they were all naturally talented.
It seemed that this student was also naturally talented. Thinking about it, it made sense. According to his records, this student practiced the Zhou Yuan technique, and without natural talent, it would be impossible to achieve such results with this technique.
At this moment on the training ground, Zheng Tongtong started to speed up. Before, she had let Chen Chuan adjust to her slashes, but now she was going all out. The training room was filled with the heavy sound of swords slicing through the air and the impact of blocks and slashes.
At 5 p.m. in the evening, Teacher Zheng called for a halt, and the sparring finally stopped.
Chen Chuan could feel the corresponding altered tissues with a slightly sour sensation, obviously tired from repeated exercises, but he remained energetic, probably due to the lamb he ate at noon.
Teacher Zheng said, "That's enough training for today, Student Chen. Come again tomorrow."
Chen Chuan responded and, holding his sword, bowed solemnly to Teacher Zheng. He then bowed to Zheng Tongtong, "Thank you, Senior Zheng."
Zheng Tongtong returned the bow and gave him a thumbs-up, "Junior Chen, you're welcome. You're very good."
Chen Chuan bid farewell to the two of them, tidied up, and left holding the Snow Lady Sword from Teacher Zheng's residence.
On the main street of Central City, as the sky darkened, a flood of lights and shadows rushed into his senses. He was carrying the Boundary Vessel provided by the Handling Bureau, and after a slight adjustment, most of them were filtered out.
As he sat down, a notification from the Handling Bureau's platform came through, informing him that the sudden case from earlier had been resolved, and providing him with a full report of the situation.
He took a look and realized that these attackers were all part of the same mercenary squad. They had recently returned from an overseas mission and were supposed to be on a break.
However, they were informed that although they had occupied the designated location, they had let the main target escape, so according to the agreement, most of their mercenary fee was deducted.
The problem was that they had borrowed money to buy equipment and maintain their implants, and with most of their fee deducted, not only did they not earn any money, but they each carried a heavy debt.
As mercenaries, they couldn't accept this, so they immediately decided to pull off a big heist.
Through an information channel, they learned that a certain exchange house had recently acquired several expensive items, which were both portable and had ready buyers. So, they decided to target this place.
They split into two groups, with one group gathering in the second-hand market, and that's where the problem occurred.
One of the team members saw a second-hand implant there, which belonged to a comrade who had saved his life on the battlefield. The comrade's name was even engraved on it. The comrade had been injured and sent to the rear by this team member, but at the time, he was definitely not in a life-threatening condition.
After discovering the truth, one of the team members immediately reacted by throwing a bomb. The shop owner, who had been hiding in the third-floor safety passage, was caught off guard and shot in the head as he reached the second floor.
The commotion attracted the attention of nearby security patrols, foiling their attack plan. Most of the team members were captured by the city patrol team and members of the Handling Bureau, but the leader managed to escape and is currently wanted.
As law enforcers had previously been targeted by criminals, the bureau reminded him to be cautious and wear protective gear when going out.
After reading the message, Chen Chuan took note of the fugitive's information and closed the message. By then, the tram had arrived at the station. He exited the station and made his way back to Xuan Gong Tower, illuminated by the intertwining lights of the city.
The next day, Chen Chuan left the academy around the same time as yesterday and headed to Teacher Zheng's home for another day of training.
Today, Zheng Tongtong did not use the heavy sword from yesterday but instead held a thin blade as delicate as a cicada's wing.
This weapon was not made of metal but crafted from a certain type of soft biological material, with a row of holes drilled into it. With the unique force enhancement, the blade could be swung at an incredibly fast speed.
Teacher Zheng first taught him a set of techniques to increase the speed of his force. Once Chen Chuan became familiar with the technique, Teacher Zheng had him spar with Zheng Tongtong, requiring him to keep up with the speed of the blade.
Once again, Chen Chuan performed exceptionally, and by the end of the day, he matched Zheng Tongtong's speed. In the following days, he repeatedly alternated his training between the two blades.
On the ninth day, after the training session, Teacher Zheng said to him, "Tomorrow is a Relaxation Day. Go back and take a rest, settle down. We're training in combat, and this kind of technique training doesn't require you to be tense all the time. Go and relax, and the day after tomorrow, we'll start the next phase."
Chen Chuan replied, "Okay." He could feel that although the current training was still foundational, he had already made significant progress compared to his previous self.
After bidding farewell to Teacher Zheng and his daughter, Chen Chuan returned to the academy.
He had made plans to go on a one-day cruise with Tan Zhi, and they were set to depart that evening, so he returned to his dormitory. After a quick wash, he began packing his belongings.
He changed into the academy's uniform and wore protective gear underneath. He prepared to bring both Snow Lady Sword and the Thunderbolt Gun given to him by Cao Guiqi.
He had inquired beforehand and was allowed to carry weapons, not just himself but all students of Wu Yi Academy. As fighters, they were well aware of the destructive nature of their abilities and would never entrust their lives to others.
Just as Chen Chuan finished packing, a message from Tan Zhi arrived: "Chen Chuan, how's it going? We're ready to go. How about you?"
"I'm ready anytime," Chen Chuan replied.
"Great, let's go! Head downstairs."
Chen Chuan picked up his belongings and took the elevator down. When he reached the plaza, he saw Tan Zhi waving at him from a convertible.
"Chen Chuan, get in the car," Tan Zhi called out.
Chen Chuan walked over, opened the car door, and sat in the passenger seat. As soon as he fastened his seatbelt, Tan Zhi stepped on the accelerator, and the car shot forward.
The wind blew through their hair and clothes. The spring breeze in February was chilly, but as fighters, they found it quite comfortable.
Tan Zhi casually rested one hand on the steering wheel. He asked, "Chen Chuan, how's it going? Has the academy assigned you an assessment project yet? Have you found a suitable teacher recently?"
"Yes, I have," Chen Chuan replied.
"Having the Handling Bureau as our backer is convenient. The company investing in me isn't small, but their conditions aren't as strict as those of large corporations, so we'll have more freedom in the future.
By the way, you might not know this, but the backer of Sun Xuechang, the organizer of this event, is Canglong Corporation. They have numerous maritime businesses, and once we're at sea, it's their home turf. But we won't venture too far from the coastline. This is mainly to ensure that if we encounter danger, we can swim back even if we have to jump ship."
Chen Chuan thought for a moment and said, "That's indeed very 'safe.'"
Tan Zhi gave a short laugh. "We have to be careful. Have you heard of the Resistance Organization?"
"I know a little," Chen Chuan replied.
"These guys are causing trouble everywhere. The Lower District is heavily infiltrated now. Oh, I'm talking about the real 'Lower District' below. That place is like a poison boil on Central City. Who knows if they might appear where we gather? We have to be more cautious, right?"
Chen Chuan had a feeling that Tan Zhi wasn't telling him everything. Perhaps it was a cover, and if there was danger, it might not just be the Resistance Organization but something else as well.
He didn't inquire further. At that moment, he looked up Canglong Corporation. This company was originally a state-owned enterprise engaged in deep-sea creature industries, but some of its businesses had been spun off.
Judging from the company's business scope, it was likely involved in the deep-sea creature industry in the sea realm.
Tan Zhi drove at a fast pace, and in just half an hour, they arrived at Ji Yang Port. By then, they could feel the sea breeze blowing across the harbor. Tan Zhi gestured towards a cruise ship moored not far from the shore, "Look, that's where we're headed today, the Rhinoceros Horn Cruise Ship."
