Chapter 269: Heartwarming
Chapter 269: Heartwarming
Lu Jiaxin chatted with Xue Mao for over an hour, but her throat started feeling uncomfortable, so they wrapped up the conversation. Instead of leaving, Xue Mao stayed and went to the neighboring room.
After a brief rest, Lu Jiaxin called Nie Zhan again, and this time he picked up.
Hearing her hoarse voice, Nie Zhan asked with concern, "Why does your voice sound so raspy? Are you unwell?"
Lu Jiaxin laughed and said, "No, I've just been talking too much today and my throat is a bit sore. I've asked my bodyguard to buy some loquat syrup, and after I drink it, I'll be fine."
Nie Zhan was about to suggest that she see a doctor instead of relying on loquat syrup, but he paused, thinking that his tone might sound too harsh and insincere. "Jiaxin, I'll come to see you tomorrow."
"No need," Lu Jiaxin smiled. "It's just from talking too much. It's not a big deal."
Nie Zhan was still worried, but since Lu Jiaxin wasn't budging, he felt it would be inappropriate to show up uninvited. "Then please take care and see a doctor tomorrow morning if you're still unwell."
Lu Jiaxin agreed and then asked, "I have some antiques, paintings, jewelry, and gems that I want to pawn. What do you think about pawning them at Wan Sheng Bank?"
"What kind of items are they?"
"Antiques, paintings, jewelry, and gems. There aren't many, but they're all high-quality. I think they should be worth around 20 to 30 million."
Nie Zhan said, "Wan Sheng Bank does provide that service, but the pawn value won't be based on the market price. It's usually only about 50% to 60% of the market value. Jiaxin, is there something difficult you're facing? Can you tell me about it?"
"It's not a big problem. I just want to invest instead of letting these items sit idle. That's why I thought of pawning them."
Frowning, Nie Zhan asked, "That's too risky. Investments come with significant risks, especially in real estate and stocks. Real estate is doing better now, but the stock market is unpredictable. If there's a crash, you might not be able to redeem these items."
Lu Jiaxin laughed. "Don't worry, I plan to pawn them for a year. Even if I fail in my investments, I can earn it back from elsewhere."
Seeing her determination, Nie Zhan didn't persist further. He decided that if Lu Jiaxin couldn't afford to redeem the items after a year, he would lend her the money.
Just then, Xiao Xiao knocked on the door and entered, saying, "Sister Jiaxin, Boss Su said he has some matters at his factory and needs to go back for a while. He'll come to pick you up for dinner later."
To distinguish between the two brothers, the home appliance factory staff referred to Su Heyuan as 'Boss Su' and Su Heming as 'Little Boss Su'. Su Heming didn't mind the title.
"Okay," Lu Jiaxin replied.
Xiao Xiao had a loud voice, and Nie Zhan, who was on the phone, could hear her clearly. He asked in surprise, "Jiaxin, are you in Pengcheng?"
"Yes," Lu Jiaxin replied with a nod. "I just arrived and will be returning to Hong Kong in a couple of days."
After saying this, her throat felt dry, and she couldn't help but cough a few times.
Feeling uncomfortable, Lu Jiaxin said in a hoarse voice, "Let's talk again when I'm back in Hong Kong. I'll see you then."
"Okay," Nie Zhan agreed.
As soon as he hung up, Nie Zhan called his assistant into his office. "I need to go to Pengcheng now. Make the arrangements."
The assistant was taken aback. "Boss, there's a meeting at 3:30 p.m."
Nie Zhan waved away the concern. "Cancel it and reschedule for the day after tomorrow at the same time. Cancel all my appointments for the rest of today and tomorrow as well."
He had initially thought that Lu Jiaxin was in Siyujiu City, which was too far for a convenient visit. But now that he knew she was in Pengcheng, he was determined to go and see her.
"Yes, boss. I'll make the arrangements now," the assistant replied.
Lu Jiaxin felt a bit tired, so she took a shower and climbed into bed for a nap. When she woke up, the loquat syrup had been bought, and after drinking a cup, she felt much better.
With nothing else to do at the hotel, Lu Jiaxin asked Xiao Xiao, "Where did your grandfather buy the land, and when do you plan to start construction?"
Seeing the land was just a side task; her main goal was to go out, take some photos, and enjoy the sights. She wanted to capture memories of her youth so that when she grew old, she could look back at these photos. Without them, many experiences would be forgotten in the river of time.
Xiao Xiao shook her head. "That place is quite far from here. It takes over an hour to drive there. And now it's almost 4 p.m., so if we go, we'll be back quite late."
"I just asked Little Boss Su's bodyguard, and he said this area isn't very safe. Recently, there was a gang targeting Little Boss Su, but his bodyguards drove them away."
At this point, she lowered her voice. "Sister Jiaxin, Little Boss Su always carries weapons on him. I think we should get some weapons for ourselves too, so we can be safer."
Lu Jiaxin had already considered this issue and said with some regret, "To carry a gun, we'd need a gun license, and those aren't easy to obtain."
"Sister Jiaxin, didn't you say that there's nothing money can't solve in Hong Kong?" Xiao Xiao asked.
Lu Jiaxin spread her hands and joked, "The problem is that your Sister Jiaxin doesn't have any money! Right now, I wish I could split every penny into two and still have enough."
Seeing her joke about her finances, Xiao Xiao couldn't help but laugh. "Sister Jiaxin, if you're poor, then there are no poor people in this world."
Lu Jiaxin laughed. "Compared to you, I'm definitely rich, but compared to the big tycoons in Hong Kong, I'm a pauper. But I'm still young, and I'll definitely catch up to them someday."
"You can do it, Sister Jiaxin!" Xiao Xiao encouraged.
The three of them, including Xue Mao, set out. Seeing Lu Jiaxin taking photos non-stop, Xue Mao asked in confusion, "Miss Xiao, why are you taking pictures of these old and dilapidated houses?"
Xiao Xiao sighed. "Who am I supposed to ask? This doesn't happen in Hong Kong."
As it turned out, she was wrong. Lu Jiaxin hadn't taken photos while walking around in Hong Kong because she hadn't had the time. After she entered university, she enjoyed taking photos during her travels, but eventually, it became less of a novelty.
Since they had left the hotel quite late, they only wandered for about an hour before heading back. To their surprise, they found Nie Zhan waiting for them at the hotel.
Lu Jiaxin was astonished. "How did you get here?"
"I was worried, so I came," Nie Zhan explained.
Lu Jiaxin couldn't help but laugh. "I told you it was a minor issue. I drank the loquat syrup, and my throat feels much better now."
Hearing the hoarseness in her voice, Nie Zhan insisted, "Don't be careless. You should still see a doctor. I'll accompany you."
Xiao Xiao was deeply touched by his words and found Nie Zhan to be very considerate. She used to think he was too old for Lu Jiaxin, but now she felt that his age was an advantage, as it meant he knew how to care for people.
Lu Jiaxin sighed. "We have a saying where I'm from: 'Medicine is three parts poison.' I'll be fine if I talk less and drink more loquat syrup these few days."
Xiao Xiao whispered into Lu Jiaxin's ear, "Sister Jiaxin, with so many people around, let's talk in our room."
Lu Jiaxin asked, "Have you checked in?"
"Yes, I did it earlier," Xiao Xiao replied.
The two women entered their room, and Xiao Xiao made a cup of loquat syrup for Lu Jiaxin before tactfully leaving. At the door, she glanced at the two burly bodyguards who resembled wooden posts and felt that Sister Jiaxin needed more bodyguards besides herself and Feng Ge.
