Chapter 268: Lanchi's Daily Tasks Don't End in the Northern Continent Either
Chapter 268: Lanchi's Daily Tasks Don't End in the Northern Continent Either
Zestila quietly listened to Lanchi's legal guidance.
At intervals, waiters in crisp uniforms and carrying trays would pass by them, and each time a tray laden with freshly prepared coffee, pastries, and cold drinks went by, a rich caramel aroma would waft through the air.
Zestila found herself surprisingly agreeing with Lanchi's words.
There were certainly some annoying monkeys at the Protoss Royal Magic Academy who deserved to be taught a lesson in this manner.
But Zestila quickly shook her head, choosing to seal away these thoughts.
She was a dragon demon, not a canine demon.
What was truly impressive about the matter with the Resurrection Church wasn't that this guy dared to report them.
It was the fact that even after he did, not a single person from the Extinction Branch came after him or retaliated.
It was hard to imagine what state of mind had led him to take such a risky action.
Most people would need more than ten lives to play such games.
Yet, the Extinction Branch seemed to swallow their anger and chose to handle the matter internally, quietly sweeping the whole incident under the rug, including all the details of what had transpired.
Zestila's attitude towards the Resurrection Church was one of neither hatred nor liking, so she didn't feel that Lanchi had done something particularly good or bad.
She just thought it wasn't too bad.
Since yesterday, those monkeys who liked to openly display their hostility towards her had become a little more subdued, seemingly afraid that her followers would keep an eye on them and report their entire family.
After all, even the members of the Extinction Branch in the Resurrection Church, famous for their scheming and viciousness, had no choice but to back down in the face of this guy. The more face-saving and reputable nobles of the Empire would definitely not want to provoke such a person.
In the corner, a clock hung silently, its ticking hands obscured by the cheerful, carefree jazz music filling the cafe.
Finally, as Lanchi finished speaking, Zestila breathed a sigh of relief.
She was fairly certain that she hadn't been assimilated.
Zestila turned her head to glance at the clock on the wall. Indeed, it was already noon, and the slight hunger she felt couldn't be denied.
"Let's go. I'll take you to identify the safe areas within the school."
Zestila picked up the books that had been neatly arranged on the table and stood up, addressing Lanchi,
"Next week is the monthly assessment. I'll have to trouble you."
After this weekend, Lanchi would need to stay at the Protoss Royal Academy for five days. Except for special reasons, followers and students were not allowed to leave or enter the school midway through the workweek.
"No problem."
Lanchi nodded and stood up as well, taking his coat from the nearby wall. He and Zestila then left the coffee shop.
Due to the dismissal of the original examiner, Keウス, and the increase in workload caused by internal personnel adjustments within the Extinction Branch, the final assessment coordination work that was supposed to be completed yesterday was postponed by a day. Today, on Saturday, they would receive the notification, and tomorrow they would report to the Temple of the Extinction Knights.
When Lanchi had submitted his resume, he had mentioned that his main job was as a tutor for noble students at the Protoss Royal Academy, and he might need to spend five working days at the academy from time to time. In their reply, the Resurrection Church had stated that new clerics would not be involved in fixed-time public missions and could prioritize their social and professional commitments.
Even though the church had transformed into a formal organization, the nature of having some clerics working in the shadows remained unchanged.
Lanchi intended to make full use of his time at the school to help Zestila earn enough credits to be able to observe the "Primal Tablet of Light."
By then, Zestila's academic path would be smooth sailing, and he would also be able to observe the tablet. A bright future awaited them both.
According to the rules of the Protoss Royal Magic Academy, regardless of how many credits Lanchi helped Zestila obtain, the right to use those credits belonged to Zestila. However, Zestila had already told him that he could decide how to use the credits he earned.
Lanchi felt that perhaps on this trip to the Northern Continent, he might be able to observe even more tablets than he had imagined. Observing the tablets was not a tiring task for him; he just needed to enter the tablet space, find a place to sit, and supervise the Great Poet as she worked diligently.
In the imperial capital of Helrom, the rare warm sun shone down on Lanchi and Zestila as they exited the mall, as if the whole world was welcoming them.
Bright, mild days like this were uncommon during winter in this fortress city-state, especially this year, which had brought snow even to the city of Lilo.
The buildings on either side of the street exuded a sense of historical depth and modern innovation, and even after nearly a week in Helrom, Lanchi could clearly sense the melting pot of architectural styles that had spanned hundreds of years, creating a magical ambiance.
Pedestrians strolled leisurely or hurried along, making the already spacious roads seem congested and slow.
Lanchi and Zestila made their way toward the Protoss Royal College, their conversation uninterrupted by their departure from the cafe. Instead, amidst the bustling street, Zestila continued to attentively explain the school rules that Lanchi should be mindful of.
Although Zestila tended to be reclusive due to her ability to directly discern goodwill from ill intent, and her reluctance to associate with those bearing malice, she was quite talkative once she opened up, making her one of the more chatty individuals Lanchi knew.
Most of the time, she was either seeking his guidance or imparting her knowledge.
Lanchi felt that if he ever paired her with the equally loquacious Senior Luvesyl, they could probably chat nonstop for an entire day.
However, like Dean Lorren, he was also skilled at listening to his students.
"On the monthly assessment day, before entering the classroom, you can only see the difficulty level and not the type of assessment. If I'm lucky, and it happens to be a topic I'm good at, then it'll be a breeze. But if I'm unlucky, I may need to rely on your wisdom and knowledge to help me out."
Suddenly, Zestila's words trailed off.
"I seem to sense a presence observing us..."
It was hard to tell if it was a gaze or some form of magical perception.
"It's gone now."
Zestila frowned as she muttered to herself.
Lanchi's stride didn't falter, but he turned his head quizzically toward Zestila, confused because he didn't sense any danger at all.
If even Cat Boss hadn't sensed anything, then the observer's strength was far superior to his own.
The bustling district of the imperial capital of Helrom could be considered an absolutely safe zone, where acts of violence were virtually unheard of.
There must be something that Zestila's unique talent had detected.
"But it's not malicious, so don't worry too much," Zestila added, reassuring Lanchi.
It was indeed rare for her to encounter a presence that wasn't ill-intended toward her, and it was even less likely that they would bear any ill will toward Lanchi.
Hearing Zestila's reassurance, Lanchi nodded in agreement, unperturbed.
"Exercise your talent more often. As your rank increases, it will evolve and become even more useful," Lanchi advised Zestila, confident in the potential of her unique ability.
"How should I exercise it, and what are the possible evolution paths?" Zestila inquired eagerly, keen to learn more about her magical talent.
In truth, even she didn't fully understand the intricacies of her own demonic talent, as many books on the subject had been lost over time.
However, her teacher was a scholar from the Southern Continent who had extensively studied the demons.
Perhaps he might possess some crucial information that was elusive in the North.
"I'm not sure about the exercises, but I know a few possible evolution paths. For example, your talent could evolve to enable you to read minds," Lanchi replied, his arms crossed as he furrowed his brows in thought.
"Oh?" Zestila was intrigued, realizing that Lanchi was acquainted with other demons.
Demons with talents similar to hers.
"My teacher is a demon as well, but it's incredibly difficult for her to evolve her talent in that direction. She prefers to keep to herself and doesn't socialize much, choosing to remain reclusive at home. Since she has no interest in listening to others' thoughts, it might take her several decades or even centuries to achieve that evolution. I advise you not to follow in her footsteps," Lanchi chuckled, shaking his head as he explained.
