Chapter 267: Trust Between People
Chapter 267: Trust Between People
To his surprise, the topic of fantastic beasts and Hogwarts did seem to pique the interest of the Nundu.
Especially when Kyle mentioned the part about Fluffy guarding the Philosopher's Stone for Dumbledore, the Nundu even snorted disdainfully.
It didn't know what the Philosopher's Stone was, nor did it care about a three-headed dog. All it knew was that it could do a better job at preventing intruders from entering that room.
At most, it would just need to release more poison... Filling the entire castle with its venom would surely keep people out.
Simple.
Taking advantage of the Nundu's attention on Kyle, Newt approached it from behind and began rubbing its belly.
After about ten more minutes, the Nundu shuddered and abruptly stood up.
Beneath it, there now lay a small Nundu pup encased in a sticky sac.
As the little one began to wriggle, the sac, resembling an eggshell, was quickly flung to the side.
The adult Nundu lowered its head and affectionately licked the pup with its tongue.
However, perhaps due to lack of experience, it applied too much force, causing the pup's face to become distorted from the licking.
"Phew... Finally!" Kyle exhaled in relief.
After talking for so long, his throat was feeling parched.
Kyle turned to look at Fawkes, expecting to retrieve the goblet of tears he had requested.
Of course, as expected, Fawkes knocked it away with his wing.
"Stingy..." Kyle muttered as he stood up.
"Don't be hasty, it's not over yet," Newt cautioned. "There should be one more."
Only then did Kyle notice that the Nundu's belly was still distended.
Nearly an hour later, when the third Nundu pup was finally born, the ordeal came to a close.
Newt wiped the sweat from his brow and waved in the direction of a distant figure.
A larger Nundu came rushing over, a plump leg of a Tebo Wartpig in its mouth.
"They're all healthy," Newt said with a smile as he placed the tiny creature on the ground. Then, without another word, he and Kyle quietly left.
Unlike their arrival, on their way back, Kyle kept turning back every few steps, his eyes filled with reluctance.
"No, Kyle!"
"I know what you're thinking, and it's absolutely not happening."
Newt spoke sternly. "I agreed to let you take Norbert to school because I trust that you can keep him under control and prevent him from escaping.
But the baby Nundus are different. They can't control their poison yet, and it's too dangerous, not just for you but for everyone in the castle."
Who better to understand this than him?
He had just seen that look in Kyle's eyes, a look that mirrored the gleam in a Nifflers' eyes when they saw gold coins. His intentions were crystal clear.
He definitely wanted to sneak a pup away!
"I... I know," Kyle scratched his head. "I was just thinking about it, not actually planning to do it."
Of course, he was aware of how dangerous the Nundus were, and he wouldn't dream of bringing them to school.
Besides, the two adult Nundus were right there; he wouldn't be able to take one even if he wanted to.
Despite his words, Newt subconsciously quickened his pace, feeling as if he were carrying a ticking time bomb.
By the time the two exited the box, the sky was beginning to brighten.
They had been busy all night.
Kyle was used to it, often pulling all-nighters in the library.
But for Newt, who was already ninety-five years old, it was a different story. As soon as he stepped out of the box, he displayed obvious signs of fatigue.
Yet, his eyes remained bright and lively.
"As expected, calling you here was the right decision.
"And it puts an enormous strain on their bodies, even endangering their lives."
"Fortunately, you were there to distract it. The process went much smoother than I anticipated thanks to you."
"No, no, I just chatted with it. I wasn't that much help," Kyle waved his hands dismissively.
Being only thirteen, he didn't want to be labeled as a "birth assistant" for no reason.
But Newton just smiled and gave him a meaningful look.
"It's late. You should get some rest. By the way, you don't need to get up early tomorrow to go to the station. I'll take you back to Hogwarts myself, and as for your luggage, Chris can send it over later."
"No need, I have my luggage with me," Kyle said.
Before coming here, he had intentionally mixed the box containing the diary with his luggage to avoid arousing Fawkes' suspicion.
Unbeknownst to him, this would save him a lot of trouble.
"That's perfect, then," Newt nodded and turned to leave.
However, after taking only a few steps, he suddenly stopped, turned back, and picked up the crate from the ground as well.
The smile on Kyle's face instantly vanished.
This was going too far... as if he expected Kyle to hide in the crate in the middle of the night!
Where was the trust between people?!
Kyle pouted and placed the hot chocolate back on the table before heading to his room to sleep.
He had been given a separate room, specially prepared by Newt and Tina.
...
Since he didn't have to rush for the train, Kyle slept until noon the next day.
Tina had prepared lunch, and the table was piled high with caramelized potato pancakes and steaks, enough to feed an army.
"Are more people coming?" Kyle asked in confusion.
The amount of food was excessive, even for thirty people.
"No one else is coming," Tina smiled and took out a box. "You like potato pancakes, so I made these for you to take to school."
"The steak is for the Nundu," Newt explained. "She needs a lot of food to regain her strength."
Kyle nodded in understanding and took a seat at the table.
Tina piled several steaks onto his plate, stacking them like bricks.
Kyle didn't refuse; he had only eaten one potato pancake since last night and was starving.
After lunch, Newt took him to visit the Nundu family again.
The toxic mist shrouding the grassland had thinned out but remained deadly.
On the same rock... the three little ones seemed to remember them and weren't shy at all. They gathered around Kyle's feet, playfully tugging at his pants.
The two adult Nundu cuddled up on the rock, lazily watching Kyle babysit their cubs while they enjoyed the steaks Newt had brought.
It wasn't until the afternoon that Kyle felt it was time to leave for Hogwarts. Reluctantly, he bid farewell to the Nundu family.
Norbert and the Occamy had already been smuggled into his crate, hidden from Fawkes' watchful eyes.
Dumbledore had indeed kept his word. The space inside Kyle's crate seemed boundless now, infinitely larger than before.
Moreover, Dumbledore had helped with some of the renovations. What used to be just a few trees had transformed into a lush forest, and the lake had expanded significantly, with two additional hills flanking its sides.
Even the climate had been adjusted, as the northern shores of the lake were now covered in thick snow and ice.
