Chapter 267: Konoha's Strongest Taijutsu User
Chapter 267: Konoha's Strongest Taijutsu User
"I never expected to be teammates with you, Guy. My luck is quite something." On the way to the training ground, Hatake Kakashi ran into Maito Guy and struck up a conversation.
Compared to his peers of average skill, Kakashi naturally preferred to team up with strong individuals like Obito and Maito Guy.
On the one hand, it would be beneficial to have a reliable teammate when undertaking missions. On the other hand, he could also seek guidance from them in his daily training.
"Can I seek your guidance on taijutsu in the future?" Kakashi asked with a smile.
"Of course, feel free to ask me anything!" Maito Guy replied, giving him a thumbs-up. He was always eager to share his knowledge.
The pair soon arrived at the training ground and spotted Ebizo waiting for them.
"Ebizo, good morning," Kakashi greeted his old acquaintance with a wave.
Ebizo returned the greeting.
"That's odd. Where's our instructor? I thought this was the designated meeting spot," Kakashi said, looking around in confusion.
"This is the right place. Perhaps he's been delayed by something," Ebizo replied with a nod.
"Youth is fleeting, so let's make the most of it. Let's train while we wait," Maito Guy suggested, proceeding to do one-finger push-ups. He invited Kakashi and Ebizo to join him.
"Haha, I think I'll pass. My stamina isn't as impressive as yours, Guy. Let's wait for the instructor to arrive first," Kakashi politely declined Maito Guy's offer.
While training wasn't harmful, this was their first meeting with their instructor, and Kakashi wanted to conserve his energy, unsure of what the training would entail.
Ebizo shared Kakashi's sentiment, so he also declined Maito Guy's proposal and opted to wait.
About five minutes later, a middle-aged man dressed in a yellow tracksuit jacket and matching tight-fitting pants came into view. He was slowly walking towards them while munching on a rice ball.
"Are you Kakashi Hatake, Ebizo, and Maito Guy?" he asked as he finished the last bites of his rice ball.
"I'm Kakashi Hatake."
"I'm Ebizo."
"And I'm Maito Guy!" Guy did a backflip, flashing a toothy grin.
"You three know each other, then?" the middle-aged man asked.
They nodded. They were friends.
"In that case, let's skip the introductions. I'm Chen Rong. You can call me Instructor Chen. I won't beat around the bush—if you can't pass my training, you'll be sent back to the Ninja Academy," Instructor Chen said bluntly.
"What? Sent back to the Ninja Academy?!" Kakashi was stunned. He hadn't heard of any such additional training after graduation. How could officially graduated genin possibly be sent back to the academy?
"Instructor Chen?" Ebizo's eyes widened in surprise behind his sunglasses. He suddenly recalled something.
Unlike his peers, Ebizo enjoyed keeping up with events outside of school. As far as he could remember, there was a certain Instructor Chen known as Konoha's strongest taijutsu user.
"Could it be that Instructor Chen? If it is, we must pass his training!" Ebizo exclaimed excitedly.
He believed that birth largely determined one's strength, but having a good teacher could significantly influence one's future prospects. Even if this instructor was only the best in taijutsu, it was still far better than an ordinary teacher.
"That's right. If you can't pass my training, I will revoke your ninja status and send you back to the academy. That's within my rights as your instructor," Instructor Chen stated nonchalantly.
It had been a long time since he last served as a guide. Occasionally, he would take on a disciple to pass on his taijutsu skills, ensuring their continuation.
However, Sarutobi had told him about an unprecedented taijutsu genius at the Ninja Academy, and that was why he agreed to take on the role of instructor once more.
Instructor Chen was no spring chicken, and while Sarutobi's words had piqued his interest, he intended to assess this so-called taijutsu genius himself. If the student didn't meet his expectations, he would send them back to the academy and resign from his post.
"What kind of training is it?" Maito Guy asked calmly, brimming with confidence.
He was highly confident in his abilities. Even his close friend, a chunin, had been defeated by him. He wasn't worried about any training designed for genin.
"You have to snatch the bell from me. If any one of you can do that, you all pass. But if you can't do it before sunset, prepare to repeat a year at the Ninja Academy," Instructor Chen said, holding up a bell.
He wasn't one for scare tactics. He would simply assess their performance and pass them if they showed satisfactory skill. If not, they would have to start over.
"You can use any means necessary to attack me. But let me give you a word of warning—don't attack carelessly. Taijutsu is my forte, and I pack a punch," Instructor Chen said casually as he sat down on the ground and began reading a book featuring a scantily clad woman on the cover.
Kakashi, Ebizo, and Maito Guy huddled together to discuss their strategy.
"What should we do? He doesn't seem to be joking. If we fail, we might really lose our ninja status and be sent back to the academy," Kakashi said gravely.
"Ah, the strongest taijutsu user in Konoha?" Hinata looked at Instructor Chen, who was sitting not too far away, reading a book and letting out an occasional unknown chuckle. Hinata's expression turned skeptical.
Instructor Chen didn't seem like a taijutsu user to him. Firstly, he wasn't much taller than them, these nine-year-old kids. He looked to be about five feet tall, and he didn't have any noticeable muscles that would give his clothes a bulging appearance.
"Konoha's best in taijutsu!" Unlike Hinata, Might Guy's face lit up with excitement at the mention of it. His dream was to become the strongest taijutsu user in the ninja world, and with Instructor Chen being Konoha's finest, he was eager to learn from him.
Ebizo pushed up his sunglasses with his finger and added, "There's no mistake. They call him Instructor Chen, and he's said to be an expert in taijutsu."
"Then aren't we in even more trouble?" Hinata frowned. "If he truly is Konoha's strongest taijutsu ninja, how are we supposed to snatch the bell from him?"
While it was a good thing to have a strong instructor, this particular development didn't seem so positive.
"Just give it our all in the fight. If we fail, it will only mean that we haven't tried hard enough. Our youthful flames haven't burned brightly enough!" Guy encouraged, giving them a thumbs-up.
Hinata glanced at Guy, and his confidence returned. Although their instructor was formidable, they also had an extraordinarily powerful companion among them.
"That's true, but shouldn't we devise some tactics or something?" Hinata suggested after a moment's thought.
"Let's set some traps to lure him in, and then Guy can take the lead in the attack while we support him," Ebizo proposed after some consideration.
Ebizo knew that this training exercise would depend heavily on Guy. While Hinata was stronger than him, the difference wasn't significant. On the other hand, Guy possessed the strength to defeat them in an instant, making him the indisputable trump card for this training session.
As they prepared the traps, the three of them shared their respective strengths. Hinata excelled in the use of ninja tools and body flicker techniques, Ebizo had a well-rounded set of skills, and Guy specialized in taijutsu.
Once they were ready, the trio worked together to attract Instructor Chen toward the trap zone.
Shwish! Shwish!
Ebizo and Hinata simultaneously pulled out shuriken and threw them at Instructor Chen.
"Finally, you're done preparing. That took quite a while," Instructor Chen commented nonchalantly as he slowly closed the book he had been reading, placing it aside. Just as the shuriken were about to reach him, he burst into action, dodging the incoming projectiles with incredible speed.
"He's so fast!" Hinata began to believe that this unassuming middle-aged man was indeed Konoha's strongest taijutsu user.
"Run!" Ebizo's pupils contracted, and he immediately shouted.
He was concerned that Instructor Chen's speed was too high, and he might catch up to them before they reached the trap zone.
Although Guy was curious to experience Instructor Chen's strength firsthand, he also understood the importance of this training. Hence, he refrained from acting recklessly and followed Ebizo, keeping a watchful eye on Instructor Chen's movements.
Guy was determined not to let his eagerness compromise the team's performance. He wouldn't be able to accept it if his impulsive actions caused his teammates to lose their ninja status.
"Let's see what tricks you've prepared," Instructor Chen said, not pursuing them at full speed. Instead, he maintained a subtle distance as he followed.
As soon as they reached their destination, Ebizo activated the traps, sending a barrage of shuriken flying toward Instructor Chen.
Instructor Chen paid no heed to the incoming shuriken. He scanned the area with a disappointed expression.
"Is that all?"
"Wood Style: Wood Dragon!"
Instructor Chen unleashed his chakra, causing him to spin at high speed. A massive whirlwind took the form of a thick, green dragon.
The powerful dragon-shaped tornado effortlessly countered Guy and his teammates' shuriken trap, and it continued to rage, swiftly destroying all the traps in the area.
Patata!
Hinata's kunai fell to the ground, and he stared at the ravaged trap zone in shock.
"What is this? How are we supposed to get the bell now...?" Hinata gazed at the massive green dragon, over 20 meters tall, and began to think about how he would explain his return to the academy to his former juniors.
He didn't believe that he could break through this terrifying hurricane with a single kunai or even a thousand. In fact, he doubted that even Guy would be able to.
"Is this the strength of Konoha's finest in taijutsu?" Ebizo exclaimed in awe as he witnessed the destructive dragon-shaped tornado, something he had never seen before.
"What powerful taijutsu! As expected of Konoha's strongest!" Guy's face reflected his surprise, but he was more excited than anything else. He was eager for the upcoming battle.
Guy quietly adjusted his breathing, focusing his breath to achieve maximum efficiency.
"Since traps won't work, it's time for the taijutsu beast to make his move!" Guy declared, his eyes gleaming with battle intent.
