Chapter 267: Cardinal Lanchi's Leisurely Life in the Imperial Capital
Chapter 267: Cardinal Lanchi's Leisurely Life in the Imperial Capital
On a Saturday morning towards the end of February, the imperial capital of Helrom was awakened by the chilly wind and the emerging morning light, as every corner of the streets glowed with a faint white hue. Though the air was crisp with cold, the city's pulse had begun to stir.
In the bustling district, magitech vehicles flooded the streets like a tidal wave, with indicator lights blinking at intersections to guide both vehicles and pedestrians. The crowd wove a fine texture into the city as street performers showcased their talents along the pedestrian walkways, captivating the attention of locals and tourists alike. The malls and skyscrapers that lined the streets gleamed in the sunlight.
At regular intervals along the avenue, entrances to the underground magitech rail stations emitted a low hum, accompanied by the buzz of passengers chatting as they entered.
In the southern district of the imperial capital, close to the prestigious Protoss Royal Magic Academy, the usually vibrant commercial area bustled with even more youthful energy on weekends.
From a cafe nestled in one of the mall buildings, the aroma of freshly ground coffee beans and caramel wafted out, while inside, a server in a black apron carefully wiped away the frost that had formed on the windowpanes. Several customers were already seated on tall, dark brown stools, sipping steaming cups of coffee that emitted tendrils of white mist.
In a quiet corner of the cafe, a small round table held two cups of hot beverages and a stack of open books.
Seated on either side of the table, on single-person sofas, were a young man and a young woman, seemingly detached from the bustling atmosphere around them.
The young man's emerald eyes focused intently as he gestured towards the books from time to time, explaining various concepts to the girl. Whenever he reached an important point or answered one of her questions, he would pause to seek her feedback, ensuring that she fully comprehended the material.
The girl, with her dark hair and unique metallic draconic horns and slit-pupiled eyes, wore the uniform of the Protoss Royal Magic Academy. She listened attentively, nodding occasionally, furrowing her brow in thought, and making notes in her book.
Though she didn't particularly enjoy these academic subjects, she maintained her focus out of respect for the teacher sitting across from her, whom she held in high regard.
Their interactions weren't all serious, however. They would sometimes close their books and engage in lighter conversations, with Zestila sharing stories about school or her personal concerns, and Lanchi offering advice and sharing anecdotes from his own experiences—a blend of knowledge and casual chatter that made them seem more like friends.
Initially, they had planned for Lanchi to visit Zestila at the Protoss Royal Magic Academy on Saturdays.
However, Lanchi had warned her that spending all day cooped up at home or only venturing out in the immediate vicinity would eventually turn her into a moldy old spinster, just like an acquaintance of his—an elderly woman who, despite her advanced age, had never married.
Though Zestila didn't give much thought to matters of romance and marriage, she had no desire to become a reclusive spinster.
So, she decided to venture out and explore the city.
After all, there were far more half-demons in the imperial capital than in a small town like Lilorem, and walking on the streets here wasn't a big deal.
More importantly, Lanchi didn't seem to mind spending time with a demon, so she had no qualms about it either.
"How do you find life in the imperial capital?" Zestila asked, rubbing her temples tiredly as she steered the conversation in a different direction after Lanchi closed his book. She figured their lesson for the day had come to an end.
At school, she couldn't focus on the lectures about magic engineering and magical lineage, often resorting to reading her own books while maintaining a mere physical presence in the classroom.
Zestila could only understand the Demon Magic script that Lanchi spoke, and she comprehended quite a bit of it. With the upcoming monthly assessment, although she could copy many of Lanchi's answers, if there were some basic knowledge that she didn't understand at all, she might even copy them wrong.
"It's pretty good. Most of the time, I don't feel like I'm in a foreign land at all."
Lanchi also closed his book, feeling that Zestila had probably reached her limit for the day.
He understood that Zestila's tone of voice when asking questions was often similar to Talia's, turning interrogative sentences into declarative ones. So, he could tell when she was asking a question.
For his human classmates at the Echelon Institute who sought extreme breakthroughs and power, Lanchi mostly employed his unique Demon teaching method to help them achieve rapid progress. But for Zestila, a demon student who was originally strict with herself to the point of heartache, he could only use Principal Loren's style of teaching through entertainment, hoping that she would achieve a healthy balance between work and relaxation.
"Apart from being my tutor, you must be preparing for other work as well."
Seeing that Lanchi was putting away his books, Zestila finally asked with some relief.
She knew that the salary her father offered Lanchi was quite generous, allowing him to live comfortably even in the imperial capital. This young man had a strange and powerful adaptability, as if he could perfectly blend into any environment within half a day, no matter where he went.
But his talent didn't stop there; he certainly wouldn't be content with living an ordinary life.
"Yes, I'm studying for the bar exam. I can take the exam next month."
Lanchi replied as he tidied up the books on the table.
"..."
Zestila fell silent for a moment.
She had heard from her father that even before this young man had arrived on the northern continent, he had already begun studying the latest revised statutes on Viscount Francis' ship.
At first, she thought he was just skimming through the Empire's somewhat absurd new revisions, but she never expected that he had actually studied them all in depth.
Although the vast majority of people who wanted to pass the bar exam so quickly would have to resort to cheating.
But this young man might just tell her, "Do you still need to cheat for something so simple?"
"I heard that the other night, you reported a high priest of the Church of Resurrection by name."
Zestila picked up her coffee, took a sip, and said slowly.
She had only found out about this yesterday when she overheard some students from the Protoss Royal Magic Academy talking about it.
Since yesterday, people had been discussing her, saying that her attendant had done something that even surprised her.
If he became a lawyer, his reputation in the industry might not be small if he continued to make such public accusations.
"Zestila, it is our right to protect our rights and interests through legal means. When we are able to, we can also proactively stand up for justice. Zestila, if you are bullied or threatened at school, don't be afraid. If you encounter any problems, report them. The Empire is in a period of transformation, and it's at a critical juncture. If anyone dares to cause trouble, just expose them and label them. As long as you catch the opportunity, one report will be enough to bring them down."
Lanchi leaned back on the sofa and continued, instructing Zestila,
"The bigger someone's influence, the more enemies they tend to make. All you need to do is create an opening, and even if you do nothing, there will be others who will help you deal with your enemies. This is called 'the righteous have heaven's support, the evil have none'."
"..."
Zestila was at a loss for words for a moment. She felt that the saying, "the righteous have heaven's support, the evil have none," seemed to be a bit off from what Lanchi was implying.
Moreover, she felt that this was a skill she couldn't learn. It wasn't something that humans or demons could master; only dogs were capable of it.
