Chapter 266: Challenge
Chapter 266: Challenge
Elsha arrived a bit late today and, shortly after, went to the bulletin board to tear off a mission notice: "Mira, Roard, this one."
"Alright~" Mira glanced at it and handed it to Ro.
Roede confirmed, "It's a typical quest, and the reward is so meager... Are you seriously considering it?"
Elsha replied seriously, "Yes, because there's a chance to get the 'Ultimate Sweet-to-Death Strawberries' along the way!"
"What kind of strawberries?"
"Ultimate Sweet-to-Death Strawberries."
She actually repeated it! It seems she wasn't just making it up.
Road asked, "Those strawberries... are they really that good?"
"They're more than just good! I've already learned the technique to make the best fresh cream, and if I can get those strawberries, I can make the best strawberry cake in Fiore!"
When she talked about the strawberry cake, Elsha's eyes were almost sparkling.
"Alright, I get it." Ro understood Elsha's character; as long as she could gain some benefit she desired during the journey, she didn't concern herself with the reward.
Even if that something was far less valuable than the reward.
The client this time was lucky, able to hire an S-class Mage for less than 100,000 J.
"By the way, I just heard them say that you've regained your S-class status, Mira?"
Mira glanced at Ro, who was writing seriously, and smiled sweetly, "Yes, because my magic power is fully restored."
"That's great." Elsha was genuinely happy for her, "How about we have a good fight once I get back?"
"Sure, it would be nice to get a bit of exercise."
"It's been a while." Elsha remembered the days when she and Mira used to compete all the time, "So, we'll set the time after I return, and the place..."
"If it's a serious fight, it's best not to be near the guild. The two of you fighting would make the Master cry."
Roed still felt a bit guilty about his mistake yesterday; at the very least, he didn't want Mira and Elsha to destroy the place again.
Mira said, "Let's decide the place after you get back, okay?"
"Alright."
Elsha left contentedly. The mission had the strawberries she was looking forward to, and there was a fight to look forward to after she returned. It was perfect.
Mira watched Elsha's back as she left and sighed, "We can actually calmly agree to a fight without all the tension we used to have."
"Because you've both grown up. You've changed a lot, too."
Ro naturally took her hand. He might be under a spell, always feeling the urge to do so.
"But it feels like it might be less fun..." Mira had an idea, "How about we make the strawberries Elsha brings back the prize? The winner gets the Ultimate Sweet-to-Death Strawberries."
"Those are hers to begin with, and she has to win them back... who would agree to that?"
"Maybe not others, but Elsha would." Mira knew her too well, "Ah, the look on her face when she has to give up something she worked hard for will be priceless."
What a trickster, not really wanting the strawberries, just the chance to see Elsha freeze in place.
"Devil."
Roed gave her that evaluation, but Mira wasn't upset at all; she was a devil, after all.
But then she thought for a moment and suddenly asked, "If I still had the same personality as before, would you still like me?"
" Hmm..."
Rationally speaking, if Mira had retained her old personality, the first person Roedeer encountered upon waking up might not have been her, and the person who would have taken the most care of him might have been someone else.
After seeing Mira and Elsha fight, it's likely that he would have listed them both as absolute figures to avoid provoking, even before getting to know them well. If there wasn't a suitable opportunity, he wouldn't have been able to understand Mira's character deeply, at least not in the short term.
But that's not entirely accurate. Even if that were the case, he would still have learned magic and had the chance to interact with her.
It's hard to predict how things would have developed.
But how could such a question be answered with a rational response?
Roed embraced Mira from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder and holding her hands: "I think even with that personality, I would still be attracted to you."
Even a devil can have a girlish side at times: "Really?"
Roed confirmed, "Really. Don't believe me... why don't you try putting on your old outfit?"
Mira gently bumped Roed with her head. This guy was smooth-talking, just trying to trick her into changing clothes.
"Ouch~" Roed felt Mira's skull was a bit hard and threw the question back at her, "If you were still the same, would you still like me?"
Mira thought about it, pulled her hand away, and grabbed the back of his hand: "At first, I probably would have found you very annoying. But over time, I would have liked you. And my confession might have been a bit more intense~"
"Intense... that word..."
Roed carefully considered how the previous Mira might have acted: 'Listen up! I said I like you! From now on, you're mine, and if you dare to flirt with other women, I'll break your legs!'
Ew~~ It sounds a bit intense.
"Cough, cough."
Just when the atmosphere was getting good, an unwelcome guest would come to disturb them. That's why public displays of affection are bad for everyone.
Mira wriggled out of Roed's embrace and pushed him back to his seat.
Laki was actually quite entertained, but after a while, she felt a strange kind of unhappiness.
People are so strange. When Mira and Roed hadn't clarified things, she seemed more anxious than anyone.
But once they got cozy, she couldn't help but want to interrupt.
Roed looked at Laki: "The infirmary has medicine for coughs and phlegm."
Laki didn't say anything, just stared at Roed and pointed to the wall she had repaired.
Roed thought for a moment: "Have you heard of the punishment by branding? You know, the kind where..."
Laki's eyes grew brighter.
Roed didn't think much of it when he said it, but paired with Laki's expression, it was quite eerie.
Luckily, Mira didn't have any of those weird fetishes.
Hmm? She probably... doesn't, right?
When he visited her house before, they only sat in the living room, which seemed normal, but he hadn't seen Mira's room.
He needed to find an excuse to go in and check.
Just asking might work, right?
Mira turned her head to look at him: "What's up?"
Roed thought for a moment and said, "I was thinking, should we team up for a mission in a few days? Just the two of us, like Alzack and Bisca."
"Sure, I'll keep an eye out for something suitable." Mira paused, "But let's wait for Elsha to come back. I want to have a good fight with her before we leave."
Roed nodded: "That's true, the guild can't be left completely unattended."
Mira looked at Roed: "Yeah, that's right."
