Chapter 265: The Legacy
Chapter 265: The Legacy
Dressed in a pristine white robe, Remiel held a scripture and declined the invitations of others as he slowly made his way to a corner of the gathering.
Here, someone was admiring the engravings on the wall.
The engravings depicted a scene of angels battling demons, and his gaze fell upon one particular angel.
She was an angel delivering messages on the battlefield.
Although her status was low, having a specific duty meant that her name was known to countless people.
"The messenger of dreams and thunder, the constant companion of the seven archangels, the angel Remiel who brings sleep."
Karl spoke slowly, "I never expected such a being to reside among mortals."
"I remember you," Remiel said, "The wizard apprentice by Katherine's side. But I heard you went to the Wizard World, why are you back?"
"I'm getting old, and I miss my homeland, so I returned," Karl turned and looked at him, his eyebrows furrowing unconsciously.
"Such hostility..."
"Don't forget the pact between the gods and the wizards. You have no right to take action until I break the agreement."
This pact was unbreakable.
At least, not by angels.
Even when the gray-robed wizard, Addison, was so disliked, the deities had to find a way for him to take his own life instead of directly taking action.
"Hmph!" Remiel scoffed, "Those without faith are never trustworthy. What are you doing here?"
"I said, I'm here to retire," Karl shrugged and asked, "How is Katherine doing now?"
"She's fine," Remiel's gaze was deep and mysterious as he looked at Karl intently before turning to leave, leaving behind the words, "Don't speak recklessly."
"Strange?" Karl was surprised, "Did I offend her?"
"This old gentleman..." Just as he was puzzled, a young man approached, "Do you know Bishop Louis?"
"Hmm..." Karl tilted his head, "I met him a few times when I was younger."
"Then you must be her senior," the young man exclaimed with joy, "I'm a loyal believer, and I've always wanted to receive Bishop Louis' blessing. Is there a chance for that?"
"It would be even better if we could spend some time alone together!"
Karl chuckled.
He wasn't trying to disguise himself at the moment, and with his injuries, he looked like a man in his sixties or seventies.
Remiel's current appearance was that of a man in his twenties or thirties.
Having met when they were younger, he was indeed a senior.
The young man obviously had his eyes on Remiel, for how could an angel's appearance be anything but extraordinary?
"Don't be hasty."
Karl pointed, "Who is that person?"
"Him?" The young man frowned, "Cecilia, the envoy of Kolon, a sharp-toothed negotiator and scoundrel."
Hmm?
Karl raised an eyebrow.
Remiel was an angel under the Dawn Lord.
The Sun God worshipped by the people of Kolon and the Dawn Lord worshipped by the people of Gando were currently at war.
'No wonder!'
'Remiel meeting with the envoy of Kolon in secret is clearly abnormal. Could he be plotting against the other side?'
Karl pondered.
It seemed he had stumbled upon some secret, which made Remiel feel murderous intent.
"Young man."
Smiling at the young man beside him, who was filled with hope, Karl said, "As far as I know, Louis has dedicated everything to the Dawn Lord and wouldn't care about mortal love."
"Give up!"
Patting the young man's shoulder, Karl strolled towards the upper floor.
He wasn't interested in Remiel's secret, and even if the gods fought until they were bloodied, it had nothing to do with him.
A few days later.
The northern suburbs of the Royal City.
Bastian arrived at an estate in a carriage, and after parking, he helped Karl out.
"Respected Earl Karl," a middle-aged man with an aquiline nose approached with a fawning tone, "Welcome."
"Old Mr. Karl," Sarah bowed slightly beside him, "We meet again.
"Hmm."
Karl nodded and tapped his staff lightly on the ground, lifting his cloudy eyes to gaze at the estate ahead.
"Is this the place?" he asked.
"Yes, indeed," the middle-aged man quickly affirmed. "This was originally the private residence of the Hill family, but since they moved into the city, it has been left vacant."
"Don't be fooled by its exterior; the interior is well-preserved. With a little tidying up, it's perfectly habitable."
Karl smiled and started walking towards the estate. "Is that so?"
The man's face paled slightly at his words.
The middle-aged man's expression grew more troubled; he was a real estate agent, and selling properties was his primary goal.
He glanced at Sarah with a hint of displeasure, but her unique status made her someone he couldn't afford to offend, so he reluctantly swallowed his frustration.
"A tragedy," Karl said, nodding.
"The kind where people died?"
"Yes," Sarah confirmed.
"Large estates like this are hard to sell. Having four owners in thirty years is quite frequent, and it's because of this very reason."
"But it's also why the price is so low. You can acquire it for just two thousand gold coins. If you hadn't mentioned your indifference to haunted houses, I wouldn't recommend it."
"Two thousand gold coins," Karl sighed. "That is indeed cheap."
A similar estate in Signo City would cost nearly twice as much, yet this one was priced the same.
And this was in the Royal City!
"Show me around," Karl said to the real estate agent.
"Yes, sir."
The man, who had initially given up, brightened at Karl's words and eagerly gestured for him to follow.
"This way, please!"
The estate was vast, covering several dozen acres, including the greenery and nearby trees, but it was clearly neglected.
The Hill family had done some basic maintenance since they wanted to sell it, but it wasn't thorough.
Cobwebs and animal carcasses were visible in the corners, and a peculiar stench permeated many areas.
"The location of this estate is excellent," the man said, "with a wide avenue leading directly to the inner city. Moreover, the construction materials are top-notch, and even the interior design is thoughtful."
"Even if you don't plan to live here, it's a great investment. Two thousand gold coins is the lowest it can go."
"Hmm," Karl acknowledged with a blank expression and strolled over to a locked door. "Why is this door locked?"
The man's face twitched slightly, and he instinctively avoided looking at the door. Lowering his voice, he said, "This door leads to the estate's basement, where a demon is said to be sealed. That's why the previous owners met with misfortune."
"And so, the door was locked."
"A demon?" Karl shook his head. "The divine light reaches everywhere; there are no demons."
There were no demons, but there were wizards!
Karl had come here to evade the Green family's revenge and also to search for any legacy left by Addison.
Addison was only a Second Circle Wizard, far inferior to Karl's current power.
However, Addison had achieved the Second Circle in this wizardry desert, making him the undisputed top-ranked practitioner.
After consuming Addison's lingering soul, Karl knew exactly where his legacy was hidden.
In the suburbs of the Gando Kingdom, within this very estate, behind this locked door.
Addison had left someone to guard his legacy, but that person's whereabouts were now unknown.
