Chapter 263: The Heartless Dumbledore
Chapter 263: The Heartless Dumbledore
Early the next morning, Kyle arrived at the shack and borrowed the fireplace to travel to Diagon Alley.
It must be said that anything related to dragons tends to be expensive, and dragon's blood is no exception. A tiny vial cost Kyle twelve Galleons, causing him to wince at the expense.
He had thought he'd found a useful text-to-speech device, but it turned out to be a pricey one... a disappointing discovery!
After leaving the apothecary, Kyle made his way to the second-hand bookshop and ran into Percy, who was just exiting the store.
He was holding a book.
As Mrs. Weasley didn't feel comfortable with Kyle going to Diagon Alley alone, she had asked Percy to accompany him. Coincidentally, Percy had also wanted to buy the book he had seen the other day.
The book was titled How to Gain Power as a Prefect.
Ever since Percy had browsed through it in Diagon Alley, he felt like he had found his life's direction.
Every time he closed his eyes, the "profound insights" from the book would swirl through his mind.
And with each revolution, he seemed to uncover a new layer of meaning.
Thus, to ensure he didn't misremember or omit any crucial details, Percy decided to purchase the book... even if it meant spending all his pocket money.
Seeing Percy's conflicted expression as he clutched the book lovingly, Kyle asked curiously, "How much did you pay for it?"
"Nine Galleons," Percy replied. "That's all my pocket money for the next two years! It was supposed to be eighteen Galleons, but the owner gave me a discount when he saw I didn't have enough."
Kyle smacked his lips.
Used books at the second-hand shop were usually half the price of new ones at Flourish and Blotts.
That meant the original price of this book was thirty-six Galleons...
Kyle had thought Gilderoy Lockhart's books, priced at five Galleons, were already expensive. He hadn't expected to find something even more exorbitantly priced here...
Wow, a single book cost more than the entire seven-book set!
Indeed, Lockhart had a lot to learn.
But Kyle didn't comment; after all, it wasn't his money that was spent.
...
This time, they didn't run into any familiar faces, and the two returned to the shack via the Leaky Cauldron's fireplace.
Mrs. Weasley had just prepared breakfast—corned beef sandwiches and fried potatoes.
Percy didn't stay for the meal. He took two sandwiches upstairs with him to continue delving into his new purchase.
Kyle sat next to Ron, who was struggling with a piece of corned beef, his face scrunched up in concentration.
"You're back, Kyle," Fred said, rubbing his chin. "What did you buy in Diagon Alley?"
"Dragon's blood," Kyle replied, holding up the small vial. A faint, pungent smell wafted through the room.
"Ugh, that's disgusting. Put it away!" George pinched his nose.
Kyle shrugged. Fresh dragon's blood had a strong odor, and the apothecary's vial wasn't the best quality, only ensuring that the liquid didn't leak.
He put the dragon's blood back into his bag, and the pungent smell in the room gradually faded.
"Dragon's blood isn't cheap," Fred commented. "Are you brewing a potion?"
"No, I have another use for it," Kyle shook his head. "By the way, did you look at the parchment I gave you?"
"Speaking of which..." Fred suddenly jumped up excitedly. "Kyle, you're a genius!"
"The arcane formula you gave us is brilliant!"
George eagerly pushed the entire plate of sandwiches toward Kyle. "With just a few minor adjustments, all the problems were solved. The Trick Wand is a success!"
"Don't tell me you're discussing those magic tricks again..."
At that moment, Mrs. Weasley walked over with a plate of sausages, giving Fred and George a disapproving look.
"That's right," Fred chimed in, holding up a piece of parchment covered in various symbols and formulas. "We're exploring the practical applications of magical text arrangement. It's homework assigned by Professor Babbling."
Mrs. Weasley glanced at the parchment and saw that it was indeed filled with magical text, along with the twins' distinctive handwriting.
"Sorry, Fred... and George," Mrs. Weasley apologized as she piled sausages onto their plates.
Fred winked at Kyle,
"It's fine... but Mum, I'm George!"
Kyle chuckled and took a bite of his sandwich.
It had to be said that Mrs. Weasley's corned beef was exceptionally dry and tough, almost resembling jerky.
Nevertheless, it tasted delicious.
After breakfast, Fred brought out his broomstick.
"Hey Kyle, how about we play some Quidditch later?" he suggested.
"Cedric's back, so we can have a proper inter-house match."
Kyle glanced at them and flatly refused. The room was filled with Gryffindors, and although Ginny hadn't been sorted yet, she was most likely going to end up in the same house.
There was no way he was going to play a five against two match, especially with three actual team players among them. Only a fool would agree to that.
"We'll even throw Ginny into the deal," George generously offered. "After all, it doesn't matter where she goes yet."
"And Harry," Kyle added.
"Don't you dare..."
"Never mind then!"
After decisively refusing this unfair match, Kyle left the shabby house.
He had intended to find Riddle and continue their lessons, especially since he had already purchased "Dragon Blood Membership." It would be a waste not to make use of it.
...
However, this plan never came to fruition.
It wasn't because of Fred and George, but as soon as Kyle returned to his room, a large fire-red bird suddenly flew in and perched on his shoulder.
"Fawkes?"
Kyle looked at the phoenix on his shoulder in surprise.
"How did you get here?"
Fawkes shook his tail feathers and dropped a box in front of Kyle—the same one he had given to Dumbledore before the holidays.
"You brought this to me?"
Kyle immediately forgot about Riddle as he excitedly picked up the box and examined it.
"Thanks, Fawkes. Where's Professor Dumbledore?" he asked casually as he inspected the box.
As soon as he asked, Fawkes became angry. The phoenix let out a sharp cry and flapped its wings, seemingly gesturing something.
"You mean he wanted to attend the magic conference in Austria alone, so he sent you to deliver this to me?" Kyle interpreted Fawkes' message, frowning slightly. If he recalled correctly, Nurmengard was somewhere near Austria...
Fawkes nodded and continued to flap its wings indignantly, as if condemning a certain unfaithful ex.
But this only caused Kyle pain as the phoenix's wings struck his body.
Kyle quickly took out some herbs and consoled the bird, "It's alright, don't be angry. Have some fresh herbs... let me tell you, he's not worth getting angry over. He..."
