Chapter 263: A Terrifying Force (1)
Chapter 263: A Terrifying Force (1)
The area was swiftly cleared, and the archers from the First Battalion took their positions in the nearby arrow towers. Pan Feng, along with the Elite Guard and Dian Wei, also arrived at the scene.
With such preparations, one would think they were well-equipped. Although the Stone Statue Army's soldiers had an average Strength of 40, the Bandit Guard's Strength was also at 25. Admittedly, there was a difference of 15 points, but the Bandit Guard outnumbered the enemy sixfold, and they had the historical general Pan Feng on their side.
Dian Wei's presence wasn't just for show. Once the battle commenced, he would undoubtedly join the Bandit Guard in the offensive.
Facing them was a Stone Statue Army with a minor boss possessing a Strength of 88. On their side, they had Dian Wei with a Strength of 91, Pan Feng with 80, and Lu HaiKong himself with 75. In terms of generals, they completely outclassed their opponents. While the soldiers' quality might not match, their numbers were overwhelming.
Furthermore, the First Battalion had already deployed an elite squad of 50 bandits equipped with Wolf Fang Bows and Arrows. With such preparations, success was almost guaranteed.
However, Lu HaiKong noticed that the Stone Statue Army showed no signs of awakening. He decided to have the Gong Sun Ballista, which was originally stored in the military warehouse, brought over.
Lu HaiKong had initially planned to mount the three Gong Sun Ballistae on the walls, but upon further thought, he realized that his mountain camp's deterrence and defense were already sufficient to intimidate the Strong Yin Clan. There was no need to flaunt this additional weapon; instead, he decided to keep it at the rear entrance as a defensive measure or hide it for a future opportunity to use it as a surprise.
Lu HaiKong had the Gong Sun Ballistae brought over for two reasons. Firstly, he wanted to test its combat effectiveness, and secondly, the enemy's armor seemed challenging to penetrate, so he added an extra layer of security.
Soon, the three Gong Sun Ballistae were transported to their side. Lu HaiKong was eager to see the ballistae in action as they hadn't been used in actual combat yet. As soon as they arrived, Lu HaiKong personally took command, directing the three ballistae to attack the Stone Statue Army.
Under Lu HaiKong's command, the three ballistae launched their attacks. One aimed at the minor boss, while the other two targeted the two rows of Stone Statue soldiers on either side.
As the three two-meter-long, thick arrows were fired, Lu HaiKong's gaze fixed on the Stone Statue Army. It was now or never to see if these statues were more than they seemed.
In an instant, the three arrows traversed a distance of 300 meters, simultaneously striking the Tomb Guardian General and two Tomb Guardian Soldiers.
Two contrasting outcomes unfolded. The two Tomb Guardian Soldiers shattered upon impact, like glass, and the arrows continued to pierce through three more soldiers before stopping. On the general's side, the massive arrow knocked him back several meters, but there was no sign of breakage.
What surprised Lu HaiKong was that the stone statues remained unmoved, as if they were the real deal.
"What's going on? Could it be a glitch in the instance? Are these statues truly just statues?" Lu HaiKong wondered aloud.
After some thought, he decided against continuing the attack. Instead, he sent Dian Wei to investigate. Lu HaiKong still suspected that the statues were merely dormant and would activate once certain conditions were met.
At the outset, Lu Hai Kong assumed that the stone statues would activate upon their approach, but now it seemed that wasn't the case. Was there a need for someone to get close to them in order to trigger their activation?
Among Lu Hai Kong's troops, only Dian Wei possessed the ability to engage and protect himself against this stone statue army once activated. Without hesitation, Lu Hai Kong dispatched Dian Wei to the task.
Dian Wei, unperturbed, held his double-bladed spear and strode forward. As he neared the statues, his pace slowed, and Lu Hai Kong noticed Dian Wei's spear rising slightly. This was a habitual gesture of Dian Wei, indicating his readiness to engage seriously.
"Pan Feng, prepare for combat! If the stone statue army activates while Dian Wei is within their range, the Bandit Guard will join the fight immediately!"
As Lu Hai Kong issued the command, Dian Wei had already ventured within five meters of the statue army. Lu Hai Kong observed the eyes of the stone statues lighting up instantly.
"Activation successful! Dian Wei, retreat!"
Upon seeing this, Lu Hai Kong immediately ordered Dian Wei to retreat. Dian Wei, at the forefront, heard Lu Hai Kong's command and felt a twinge of disappointment, but he chose to obey and began his withdrawal.
Dian Wei could sense that among the stone statues, one possessed a formidable aura, almost on par with his own. He had intended to test his skills, but Lu Hai Kong's command compelled him to retreat.
"Invaders, die!"
A voice with a mechanical undertone rang out, and the stone statue army sprang into action. Led by the Tomb Guardian General, they advanced towards Dian Wei with rigid movements.
"Gongsun Ballista, fire! First Camp, shoot!"
At Lu Hai Kong's command, the nearby arrow tower unleashed a barrage. The First Camp and the three Gongsun Ballistae, having loaded their arrows, simultaneously launched their assault.
This time, Lu Hai Kong had learned his lesson. Instead of targeting the Tomb Guardian General, they aimed at the Tomb Guardian Soldiers. The Gongsun Ballistae's arrows took down six soldiers, reducing their numbers by three compared to their previous immobile state.
Although they lost three soldiers, taking out a tenth of their force was a commendable feat. In contrast, the First Camp's archery attack proved less effective.
Lu Hai Kong had initially held high hopes for the First Camp, as he was well aware of the devastating power of the 'Wolf-Tooth Arrows' and 'Wolf-Tooth Bows' when used together. However, Lu Hai Kong overlooked one crucial detail—these stone statue soldiers were not human. The damage inflicted by arrows was negligible against them.
The stone soldiers possessed not only armor but also stone-like skin. The Wolf-Tooth Arrows could only create shallow pits on their surface, and taking them down was virtually impossible.
As soon as the two sides clashed, Lu Hai Kong realized that this stone statue army was far more formidable than he had anticipated. Their stone skin rendered the First Camp's efforts meaningless.
