Chapter 259: The Elusive Prey
Chapter 259: The Elusive Prey
Karl returned to the Magic Forest, his departure unnoticed as he had not yet employed any concealment spells to hide his presence.
Not long after he left, the void suddenly split open, as if a sharp dagger had slashed through space.
Upon closer inspection, the edges of the rift were adorned with intricate runes, forming a passage that connected two realms. Two figures emerged from the portal, one after the other, gazing down at the dense forest below.
"It's here," said a female wizard with flowing white hair, her voice calm and composed. "The aura lingered for only a brief moment before disappearing. The person is likely still nearby."
"Hmm," Volgan nodded, lifting his hand slightly, and a creature resembling a wriggling silkworm appeared.
"The Green Family's mark is unique; even deities would have to pay a certain price to remove it. I'm curious as to how he managed to remain undiscovered for so long."
"Umm..." The female wizard turned her head slightly, "Is that why you've been working so hard to find him? I thought it was because of the Green Family's request."
"Both," Volgan's expression remained unchanged. "In thousands of years, no core bloodline of an elite wizard family has ever been killed in the Magic Forest. I can't afford to anger the Green Family."
"But I'm more curious about how Conny managed it."
Even for him, killing Uncle Barn and his nephew wouldn't be easy, yet Conny had done it and remained at large for so long.
But it didn't matter...
The female wizard before him was a three-ringed wizard with the ability to manipulate space. Once they found the person, capturing them would be a certainty.
And with the methods of the Sixth Circle Tower, extracting the information they needed from 'Conny' would be a simple task.
The silkworm wriggled and slowly stopped moving.
Volgan's expression turned somber.
"It's gone!"
The silkworm in his hand was a void silkworm, capable of locking onto auras, and even a Tier 3 wizard couldn't escape its detection.
However, at this moment, they couldn't locate 'Conny's' trace.
"It's normal," the female wizard's expression remained calm. "If it could be found, it wouldn't have remained hidden for so long."
"Yes."
Volgan's face showed disappointment. "Let's go back. Hmm..."
"What is it?"
"There's something at the Tower."
Volgan's eyes flickered slightly, and he shook his head gently. "It's a minor issue."
"An outcast wanting to return home, seeking my approval... Let him be."
---
To await news, Karl found an uninhabited spot near the Tower and settled in.
His neighbors were all from the Tower, and the wizard apprentices were naturally curious about this outcast in their midst. After inquiring about his story, they couldn't help but feel a sense of regret.
Once a promising wizard, now forced to return home due to a minor issue.
The Eastern Kingdom Continent!
The Wizard Forbidden Zone.
A place where a wizard's path could go no further, and where the gods held dominion, leaving wizards unable to openly practice their craft.
One day, a male and female wizard apprentice approached Karl.
"Senior Karl," the male apprentice introduced himself, "I'm Bernie, and this is my wife, Louise." Bernie was handsome, and his introduction was accompanied by a graceful gesture.
"We're from the same place."
"Oh!" Karl's eyes lit up.
"A fellow countryman!"
"Please, come in and sit down."
"Yes, sir," they replied respectfully and entered. Bernie shared some good news.
"My mentor told me that Senior Volgan has agreed to your request, and soon the Tower will send you back. My mentor should notify you soon."
"Your mentor?"
"Daniel," Bernie clarified. "Daniel is my mentor."
"Impressive!" Karl exclaimed. "Daniel rarely takes on disciples. Your wizardry talent must be exceptional, and your future looks promising."
"Talent is just talent, and the future is uncertain," Bernie shook his head. "I've heard of your achievements. Although your talent wasn't exceptional, you were one of the only two in your cohort to become a full-fledged wizard."
"I hope that one day, we as a couple can become official wizards too."
"We will." Karl nodded. "The first time we met, I didn't have much to offer, but these jade pendants are something I obtained years ago. Please accept them as a gift."
He took out a set of inherited wizardry tools and forcefully placed them in their hands, despite their repeated refusals.
"Don't be polite. We all came from the same place."
Karl spoke up, "Speaking of which, it's been many years since I last returned. I wonder how the Eastern Kingdom Continent is faring?"
"Is the war still ongoing?"
"The war continues." Louise replied, "Are you from the Gando Kingdom?"
"Yes." Karl nodded and smiled, "As a matter of fact, I also hold the title of Baron."
"What a coincidence." Louise's eyes lit up, "I, too, inherited my father's title, but ever since I came into contact with wizardry, I lost interest in such matters."
"When we left, the Gando Kingdom's territory was mostly occupied by the Kolong forces."
"Kolong's cannons are becoming increasingly powerful..."
Louise, despite being a neglected member of her family, had inherited the title of Baron, indicating the high status her family held among mortals.
Even though she wasn't particularly interested, her understanding of the war situation far surpassed her husband, Bernie, and her explanations were much clearer.
Karl nodded repeatedly.
Following Aya's guidance, he decided to leave the Magic Forest and gather information about the situation there.
"Anyway..."
Louise sighed, "Although we occasionally receive good news, from the front lines, Kolong Kingdom still holds the upper hand."
"But as you know, mortal wars are just games for the gods. The real battle is above."
She pointed upwards.
"I heard..."
"It's just hearsay, but angels and guardians have appeared on the battlefield, and they're not just first or second rank."
Karl's eyes widened slightly.
If that's the case, perhaps the gods have become enraged, and the conflict has escalated into a direct confrontation among the deities?
After seeing Bernie and Louise off, Karl stood at the door deep in thought for a long time before heading towards the Wizard Tower.
...
"Daniel, I have some news for you," Daniel, who was organizing materials, turned around and smiled, "I was about to inform you that Elder Volgan has agreed to your request, but you'll need to provide the magic crystals required to activate the Star Gate yourself."
"Thank you!" Karl expressed his gratitude, "Wizard Daniel, this might be my last trip back. Can I purchase some wizardry materials and knowledge here?"
"Well..." Daniel's expression turned hesitant.
"I'm still a disciple of the Sixth Circle Tower," Karl said with a serious face, "I don't need advanced wizardry, just a complete set of wizardry knowledge. The Tower doesn't restrict such things."
"Wizard Daniel."
"The Eastern Kingdom Continent is known as the Wizard's Desert. There are many wizard apprentices who yearn for complete knowledge. Through the items I bring back, they can envision the Kali's path."
"Alright." Daniel sighed, "As long as it's not restricted, I can agree to your request, but you'll need to pay the necessary fees."
"Of course." Karl smiled, "Over the years, I've earned some magic stones by crafting charms for others. I have enough to cover the costs."
Currently, Karl didn't lack top-tier inheritances; instead, it was the foundation of his wizardry that needed strengthening.
The foundational knowledge of the Sixth Circle Tower was compiled by several Fifth Circle Wizards, and it would greatly benefit him.
Only by solidifying his foundation could he go further.
Next, Karl would periodically travel to the other world to recharge the Crystal Orb before returning.
Since the trips were brief, they didn't attract much attention.
One day, Bernie arrived to inform him that the Star Gate would be opened the following day.
