Chapter 256: Minato's Aspiration to Become a Teacher
Chapter 256: Minato's Aspiration to Become a Teacher
Inspired by his conversations with Mu Yue, Minato decided to take some time off from accepting missions and focus on developing new jutsu.
However, just as Minato was contemplating how to replicate the Tailed Beast Ball, a ninja arrived at his door with a summons from the Hokage. Without delay, Minato made his way to the Hokage's office.
Knock, knock!
Minato rapped his knuckles on the Hokage's office door.
"Come in," came Hiruzen Sarutobi's voice from within.
Minato pushed open the wooden door and stepped inside.
"Is there a mission you wish to assign me, Third Hokage?" Minato asked directly, wasting no time on pleasantries.
Such a direct summons usually meant either someone had specifically requested him for a task or the Hokage had a special mission in mind.
"It's not exactly a mission," Hiruzen said, removing his pipe and exhaling a puff of white smoke as he smiled.
"Minato, you've been a jonin for some time now. Have you ever considered becoming a mentor?"
Hiruzen Sarutobi held Minato in high regard, not only for his exceptional talent as a ninja but also for his admirable character.
Thinking of this, Hiruzen couldn't help but feel a slight headache. Each of his three disciples was undoubtedly powerful, but they all had their flaws in terms of personality.
Tsunade had a gambling addiction and had started to give up, and due to her hemophobia, she could only focus on healing and couldn't participate in battles.
Orochimaru was cold-hearted and indifferent, rarely showing concern for his companions unless they served a particular purpose or benefited him in some way. He would stop at nothing to achieve his goals.
Compared to the other two, Jiraiya was relatively normal, aside from his perverse tendencies. However, Hiruzen didn't consider this a significant issue.
If he had to choose one of his disciples to become the next Hokage, Hiruzen would pick Jiraiya.
Upon hearing Hiruzen's words, Minato fell into deep thought.
His own mentor, Jiraiya, occasionally displayed his perverse side and often seemed unreliable. Yet, Minato genuinely believed that Jiraiya was an excellent teacher.
Jiraiya rarely put on airs of superiority as their mentor and, aside from their training sessions, they interacted more like friends.
Jiraiya was always dependable, whether on missions or when teaching them new techniques. His unreliability mostly manifested in their daily lives, and whenever Minato saw Jiraiya's serious or focused expression, he felt a sense of security.
Minato attributed a large part of his current strength to Jiraiya's guidance.
Minato's thoughts then turned to Mu Yue, and he recalled the heartwarming scenes of her interacting with her disciples at the camp.
Even Kakashi Hatake, who dared to talk back to Jiraiya, listened to Mu Yue without question.
"Yes," Minato replied with a smile, looking at Hiruzen. "I'd like to become a teacher, just like my sensei, Jiraiya, and nurture talented ninjas. I also want to have a few outstanding and adorable disciples like Mu Yue."
Hiruzen nodded in satisfaction, pleased to see that Minato, an exceptional disciple of Jiraiya, had the potential to become the Fifth Hokage.
To become the Hokage, one needed to possess the skill of cultivating successors. The Second Hokage had nurtured him and Danzo, while Hiruzen himself had trained the Sannin.
"The graduation exam at the Ninja Academy is coming up, and soon there will be a new batch of genin. You'll be responsible for these three students," Hiruzen said, handing Minato three sets of documents.
Although the exam hadn't started yet, the three students he had chosen for Minato were guaranteed to pass. Moreover, due to the ongoing war, the graduation standards at the Ninja Academy would be lowered to increase the village's capacity to respond to the conflict. As a result, it was almost unheard of for a student not to graduate.
Minato nodded and accepted the files, but his eyes widened in surprise as he recognized the profile picture and name on the first one.
"Hatake Kakashi, Chunin..." he murmured, studying the image of the white-haired youth with a mask covering the lower half of his face.
He remembered Kakashi as a member of Mu Yue's squad, and the young man had even accompanied Mu Yue on the battlefield. For his age, Kakashi's abilities were undoubtedly impressive.
"Mu Yue was only leading an intern squad. After the interns graduate, the squad will disband, so Kakashi is being reassigned to me, I assume?" Minato guessed the reason for the change.
After all, Mu Yue's primary role was still that of a teacher at the Ninja Academy, and unless Kakashi followed her to the academy as an assistant teacher, he would have to join another team.
"What a brilliant child. It's a shame that White Fang couldn't..." As Minato finished reading Kakashi's file, he sighed inwardly.
When Minato moved on to the second document, he was taken aback. The name on the file was Uchiha Obito, and the photo showed a black-haired boy with protective goggles, wearing a goofy smile.
He recognized this person as well, another one of Mu Yue's students. Minato recalled Obito teasing him and Mu Yue about looking like twin brothers when he had crashed their meal, and he even remembered Obito helping him take photos.
As Minato scanned Obito's mission log, he was astonished. Obito, a mere Ninja Academy student, had records of completing two A-rank missions and one S-rank mission. It was noteworthy that many chunin didn't even have S-rank mission completions under their belts.
"Could it be that Mu Yue allowed an intern to participate in such high-level missions?" Minato wondered, perplexed.
He could guess that the S-rank mission was due to the sudden outbreak of war, and Obito had happened to be with Mu Yue at the time, earning him that credit. However, the two A-rank missions intrigued him, and there was also a B-rank mission listed, though no C-rank missions were mentioned.
After perusing Obito's impressive resume, Minato had to admit that this was an unprecedented record for a Ninja Academy student, perhaps one that would never be replicated.
When Minato saw the third student's file, he breathed a sigh of relief. The name on the document was Nohara Rin, not Maito Gai.
If the third student had been Maito Gai, Minato might have been compelled to ask Hiruzen about the meaning behind this particular arrangement.
Two out of the three students were Mu Yue's former disciples, and Minato made a mental note to invite Mu Yue over for dinner so they could discuss these intriguing developments.
"Of course, everyone in Konoha knows the name of the White Fang of Konoha." Minato replied, his first thought upon seeing the surname Hatake being the famed ninja.
"Kakashi is his son, and after that incident, Kakashi changed completely, and not for the better..." Hiruzen sighed as he recounted Kakashi's story, from a talented student at the Ninja Academy to a cold-blooded teammate that no one wanted to associate with.
"Thanks to Mu Yue's efforts, Kakashi seems to have returned to his old self. But I don't know if it's temporary or permanent, so I'm counting on you, Minato, to keep an extra eye on him."
The changes in a person can sometimes be visible to the naked eye, and when Hiruzen had seen Kakashi at the mission hall earlier, he knew something was different about him.
To ensure that Mu Yue's efforts wouldn't go to waste, Hiruzen had arranged for two of Kakashi's teammates to be people he was comfortable with—Nohara Rin and Uchiha Obito.
"I will," Minato said solemnly. Even without Hiruzen's special reminder, he would have taken it upon himself to help any of his students who were facing problems; otherwise, he wouldn't be worthy of being called a teacher.
...
In the evening, Minato paid a visit to Mu Yue's home, intending to chat with her about Obito and the others, as well as to freeload a meal.
It wasn't that he had an insatiable urge to freeload, but rather that if he came too early, Mu Yue wouldn't be home.
Aside from mealtimes and evenings, Mu Yue spent most of her time teaching her students.
Minato skillfully helped Mu Yue with chopping vegetables, then smiled and said, "Mu Yue, I'm also a teacher now. Although I won't be teaching at the Ninja Academy, a field instructor is still considered a teacher."
"Of course, a field instructor is a teacher. And you've been my sealing jutsu teacher for a while now," Mu Yue said with a chuckle.
"Most of the credit goes to Kushina," Minato said humbly.
While Minato's sealing jutsu skills weren't as good as Kushina's, he was still highly skilled in that area, which was a great help to Mu Yue, who was just starting to learn sealing jutsu.
"The Third Hokage gave me the files of the students that will be assigned to me in advance, and two of them are your disciples—Kakashi Hatake and Uchiha Obito." As he said this, Minato's expression became somewhat complicated.
"That means you have a strong connection with them," Mu Yue said, her smile showing her surprise.
"It's their good fortune to have you as their field instructor. Your strength is well-known, and among the Konoha jonin, only the Sannin can surpass you."
Mu Yue glanced at Minato's panel. After several months of training on the battlefield, Minato's strength had increased significantly. His chakra level had reached 55,000, his Flying Thunder God technique had become more proficient, and his other skills had also improved considerably. Overall, his strength had increased by a large margin.
Mu Yue felt that Minato's current strength had surpassed that of many Konoha jonin and that he could be considered one of Konoha's top-tier forces.
"There are still some jonin who are more powerful than me." Minato waved his hand modestly upon hearing Mu Yue say that he was only inferior to the Sannin.
"Everyone has their own strengths. In terms of jutsu power, yours is actually stronger than mine."
"But if you can't hit your target, then having stronger jutsu doesn't mean much. Your Flying Thunder God technique is just too fast." Mu Yue engaged in some mutual praise.
"Usually, there are three students in a team, right? Who's the third person?" Mu Yue asked cautiously.
While the original team in the story consisted of Rin, Obito, and Kakashi, with Minato now added to the mix, it was possible that Hiruzen might decide to team up Obito and Kakashi with Maito Gai instead, especially if he noticed that they got along well with each other.
If Rin and Obito weren't teamed up, then Mu Yue would have to urgently develop the Water Breathing technique, as having weaker teammates would mean that he would need to further increase his own strength.
"It's a girl named Noihara Rin." Minato handed the washed vegetables to Mu Yue as he replied.
There was no need to keep this information a secret; it wasn't a confidential mission, after all.
"What a coincidence! Rin is also my disciple!" Mu Yue exclaimed, feigning surprise.
Previously, he had kept it a secret because his strength wasn't that impressive, and on the surface, he also had his Root organization identity, which made things more complicated.
Now that his apparent strength was that of a powerful jonin who could defeat Haku, and given that he was talking to Minato, there was no need to hide too much.
"Don't you also have a disciple named Maito Gai?" Minato asked, looking confused.
"Before, I conducted a special training session for the fourth-grade students at the Ninja Academy, and during that training, I discovered Rin's potential, so I took her on as my disciple to cultivate her further." Mu Yue explained.
Minato's expression showed that he now understood, but he still felt puzzled inside. So, all three of his disciples were also Mu Yue's disciples.
"Mu Yue, why don't you become a field instructor yourself? That way, you can continue to teach them." Minato asked.
He felt that with Mu Yue's strength, it would be better for him to become a field instructor, as it would give him more flexibility and also allow him to train himself.
"I prefer teaching at the Ninja Academy, and even after they graduate, I can still guide them during my free time." Mu Yue smiled in response.
At his current stage of strength, he would gain more by teaching at the Ninja Academy.
Based on the rewards from previous missions, disciples who went on missions with Minato would also receive rewards, although they wouldn't get any additional bonuses. The rewards would probably be about two-thirds of what they would get if they went on missions by themselves.
"Then, Mu Yue, when you have free time in the future, please guide me on how to teach students. You're much better at that than I am." Minato smiled as he spoke; Mu Yue's teaching abilities had even earned the praise of Hiruzen.
