Chapter 255: King Among Kings
Chapter 255: King Among Kings
As night fell, a blanket of silence enveloped the land.
Pokemon native to the Giant's Seat began returning to their nests, yawning and snuggling in for a peaceful slumber.
Occasionally, a nocturnal Pokemon would scurry through the nearby grass, rustling the foliage as it passed.
Standing atop the hill, one could gaze upon the distant waters of the Galar Sea, which, thanks to the region's currents, didn't plunge this area into the same frigid temperatures as the northern Snowpoint.
It was this very climate that fostered such a rich and diverse wild Pokemon ecosystem.
Naoki stood with a few Pokemon and a Regigigas gathered around a campfire.
Upon hearing of Naoki's plans to leave the Crown Tundra tomorrow, Regigigas turned its gaze toward the distant Galar region and spoke softly:
"Before you go, there is a place I wish to visit."
Naoki was taken aback, "Where to?"
Regigigas: "To the realm of the King of Swords and the King of Shields."
The King of Swords and the King of Shields... none other than the legendary Pokemon of Galar, Zacian and Zamazenta!
Naoki paused, then asked in surprise, "You know Zacian and Zamazenta?"
Regigigas nodded slightly, "I once stood alongside them in the face of a calamity that threatened to destroy the Galar region."
It could only be referring to the Dark Night caused by Eternatus. Naoki couldn't help but ask, "Can you tell me what happened back then?"
The events of that time had become obscured over the centuries, and modern-day people had forgotten about Regigigas, Zacian, and Zamazenta. They only remembered a hero wielding a sword and shield who saved the Galar region.
Even in the games, this history was not explicitly explained, leaving players to piece together fragments and clues to form their own conjectures.
Regigigas, with an air of dignity, nodded, "Of course. Since you wish to know, I shall recount it all to you."
Naoki quickly fetched a small stool and sat with his Golurk, listening intently as Regigigas began its tale by the campfire.
"Long ago, I led my beloved steed and our devoted human followers in a peaceful existence upon this very land."
"One day, through my ability to foresee the future, I saw that a catastrophic event, the likes of which had never been seen before, would soon befall the Galar region."
"To prepare for this disaster, I summoned two other powerful Pokemon native to this land, Zacian and Zamazenta."
"Upon learning of the impending catastrophe, they pledged their aid to prevent it."
"Thus, I performed a coronation ceremony for them at the Crown Shrine and bestowed upon them my 'King's Power.' A Pokemon named Melmetal crafted their weapons."
"The 'King's Power' fused with their weapons, granting Zacian and Zamazenta the strength needed to confront the calamity."
"They set out to stop the disaster while I, along with my steed, used our spiritual powers to evacuate the Pokemon of the forests and mountains."
"My strength was spent in this endeavor, ensuring the safety of those Pokemon, and I was forced into a deep slumber, unaware of subsequent events."
"I see..." Naoki murmured.
Regigigas looked at him and continued, "However, I can sense that the remnants of that calamity still linger on this land, and perhaps its source has not been completely eradicated."
"In going to the realm of the King of Swords and the King of Shields, I wish to inform them of this, so they may be prepared."
Naoki could sense Regigigas's continued devotion to the Galar region.
He asked, "Won't you stay and face that calamity with them?"
Regigigas shook its head gently, "My presence is no longer required here. As my power returned to its peak, I once again forsook the future."
"This time, I saw that the King of Swords and the King of Shields, with the aid of two humans, would vanquish the source of the calamity."
"I see..." Naoki realized.
The two humans Regigigas spoke of were likely Hop and the player character, the brother of Leon, the champion of the Pokemon League.
There was, however, one other matter that piqued Naoki's curiosity.
The sword and shield wielded by Zacian and Zamazenta were crafted by Melmetal?
That was certainly an unexpected revelation!
Having learned all he wanted to know, Naoki let out a sigh.
Through Regigigas's narrative, he could almost envision how these legendary Pokemon had united to face Eternatus in that ancient era.
"Ah..."
Regigigas looked puzzled, "Why the sigh?"
Naoki felt Regigigas deserved to know the truth, "That calamity, known to humans as the Dark Night... after you fell into slumber, Zacian and Zamazenta successfully repelled the Dark Night, and then they went into seclusion."
"In the aftermath, humans began to thrive, forming kingdoms and usurping the heroic legacy of Zacian and Zamazenta, leading those unaware of the truth to believe that the Galarian royalty had saved the region."
She shook her head slightly, "I do not care for such empty fame. Back then, I, along with the King of Swords, merely wished to protect the Pokemon living on this land. In my eyes, that is what a qualified king should do."
"Moreover, all that I knew and those who believed in me have long disappeared. I no longer lament over this."
Naoki: "......"
That was indeed true.
He let out a helpless sigh, "Alright then."
Early the next morning, Naoki and Regikonigin, mounted on their Golurk and Rapidash, bid farewell to the Giant's Seat.
Naoki felt a tinge of regret as he had not encountered any traces of the Galarian birds during this trip. Otherwise, he would have definitely asked Golurk to catch a few to bring back and raise at the ranch.
No Pokemon trainer could resist the allure of rare legendary beasts, and Naoki was no exception.
Seeing the expression on his face, Regikonigin looked puzzled, "Why do you seem so dejected?"
Golurk, on the other hand, instantly understood. No one knew Naoki better than it did.
Golurk wore a look of exasperation.
As expected, the next second, it heard Naoki say, "......I once read in a human adventurer's notes that three legendary bird Pokemon dwelled in that giant tree. It's a pity I didn't get to see them this time."
Upon hearing this, Regikonigin immediately knew which three Pokemon he was referring to.
"They do not dwell there permanently, only occasionally resting on the treetops. And if those three ever cross paths, they will engage in fierce battles against each other."
"Looks like I didn't pick the right time to come." Naoki lamented.
Golurk let out an exasperated sigh, "Aga... sigh..." (For goodness' sake...)
Regikonigin smiled faintly, "If you wish to see them, I can accompany you here to search for them another time."
"Never mind," Naoki said, "Let's leave it for when we have more time! There's still a lot to do when we get back."
For example, asking Kishu to help build stables, preparing for the reconstruction of the mountains in the coming spring, and so on.
There were two ponies, a Spiritomb and an Abomasnow, and it seemed that their territorial instincts were rather strong, so he would need to build separate stables for each of them.
On their journey back, Naoki did not return to Freezington but instead took an alternative route with Regikonigin, arriving directly at the Slippery Slope.
This was where the steam train to the Galar region was located.
On the outskirts of the Slippery Slope, Naoki, riding on Golurk, came to a stop and asked Regikonigin, "We're going to take the train to the Galar region, and we might encounter other humans along the way. Do you want to meet them?"
Regikonigin pondered for a moment, thinking that humans of this era probably wouldn't recognize her, and replied nonchalantly, "Sure."
"Alright then," Naoki said, turning his gaze to the Spiritomb and Abomasnow, "There's also one more thing. The train doesn't allow large-sized Pokemon onboard, so I need to put you two into Poke Balls. Is that okay?"
"Poke Balls?" Regikonigin echoed, her expression revealing her confusion.
Naoki took out a regular red and white Poke Ball and explained,
"Yes, these are tools created by humans to carry Pokemon. By pressing the button, you can recall Pokemon into the ball and take them with you anywhere."
He carefully explained to Regikonigin about the relationship between humans and Pokemon in this era, as well as the existence of trainers and breeders, professions closely tied to Pokemon.
Regikonigin listened attentively, nodding along. When Naoki finished, she spoke, "I understand. Since that is the case, you may put my two beloved steeds into these Poke Balls."
Naoki nodded and walked up to the Spiritomb and Abomasnow, giving each of them a gentle pat on the head. Then, he took out two empty Poke Balls and held them against the Pokemon's heads.
Two beams of red light flashed, and the bodies of the Spiritomb and Abomasnow were drawn into the Poke Balls.
Perhaps it was because he had gained the trust of the two ponies, but the Poke Balls only shook slightly before becoming still.
This indicated a successful capture.
Witnessing this incredible scene, Regikonigin widened her eyes in amazement, her gaze filled with curiosity.
"What kind of method is this?"
"Er..." Naoki thought for a moment before answering, "It seems to utilize the principle of Pokemon shrinking when they are weakened, but I'm not entirely sure of the specifics."
"Can I also enter one of those Poke Balls?" Regikonigin asked, a sudden idea popping into her head. "In the eyes of humans, I am also a Pokemon, am I not?"
"I suppose so," Naoki replied.
Regikonigin wore an eager expression, curious to experience this herself.
Naoki had no choice but to take out a third Poke Ball and press the button, recalling Regikonigin into it.
Perhaps due to Regikonigin's high level of affinity towards him, this Poke Ball didn't even shake at all before becoming still.
Recalling Naoki's earlier mention of the relationship between trainers and Pokemon, Regikonigin asked, "Does this mean I am now your Pokemon? Trainer, I look forward to your guidance from now on!"
Naoki: "......"
To avoid any misunderstandings, Naoki quickly clarified, "I'm not a trainer, and I'm not skilled at training Pokemon either. Just like you, I'm a farmer."
"Hahahaha!" Regikonigin suddenly burst into laughter, "You're right, I'm no longer a king. From now on, we're all farmers!"
Naoki: "......"
The two continued on their journey, retracing their steps back to the station located in the Frigid Sea.
Just as they were about to reach their destination, Naoki noticed a prominent cordon blocking the path ahead, along with red markings symbolizing extreme danger. It seemed something perilous had occurred in the area.
The station up ahead was also closed, its doors firmly shut and the lights dim.
"Hmm?"
Naoki furrowed his brows.
Regikonigin, sensing something amiss, spoke with a solemn expression, "I sense an unusual presence..."
She turned and saw flames soaring into the sky from the distant mountains, illuminating the sky with a fiery hue.
Naoki and Golurk also noticed this peculiar sight.
What was happening? A fire in the sub-zero temperatures of the Frigid Sea? It was bizarre!
Just then, a deep and eerie panting sound filled the air.
Immediately after, a red, abnormal creature resembling a humanoid mosquito descended before Naoki and Regikonigin.
It was a creature covered in grotesquely swollen muscles.
Behind it were two pairs of semi-transparent, crimson wings, and its head was small and flat. Below its spherical black eyes was a mouth full of sharp, blade-like spikes that glinted menacingly.
An Ultra Beast!
The moment Naoki laid eyes on the creature, its name flashed through his mind.
Pheromosa! But how was this possible?! An Ultra Beast from the Alola region, here in the Galar region?!
Just as he was taken aback by its appearance, the Pheromosa lifted its bulky arm and struck a classic bodybuilding pose, pressing its bicep against its head.
With its muscles rippling, it seemed to be proudly flaunting its explosive physique.
"Danger!"
Suddenly, a voice filled with caution rang out from not far away.
Naoki turned to see a man in a Galar League uniform, accompanied by a Kabu, running towards them.
The man's gaze fell on Naoki, and he quickly called out, "Please leave this place! The Galar League has sealed off this area, and the station is temporarily closed. Please use an alternative route to get to the Galar region!"
However, before he could finish his sentence, the Pheromosa seemed disturbed and wore an irritated expression.
Its swollen muscles rapidly expanded further, and a loud buzzing sound emanated from its abdomen. Its crimson body moved like lightning, the wind from its movement blowing off the man's hat.
The man was taken aback, but before he could react, he heard his Kabu let out a painful cry.
The man turned to see the muscular creature tightly hugging his Kabu, ignoring its struggles as it plunged its spiked mouth into the Kabu's neck.
The struggling Kabu, once robust, was rapidly withering before their eyes, reduced to a mere husk that lay feebly on the snowy ground!
The man's eyes widened in shock.
The Pheromosa, having finished sucking the life out of the Kabu, had muscles that seemed to be flowing with lava. It loomed like a wall in front of the man, looking down at him from above.
Naoki was startled by this sudden turn of events.
Regikonigin, witnessing the scene, also furrowed her brows.
Just as the Pheromosa was about to attack the man, Regikonigin spoke with authority, "How dare you!"
The Pheromosa's attention was indeed diverted.
Naoki reacted quickly, realizing Regikonigin intended to take action. He immediately took out a Poke Ball and released a horse at random.
White light flashed, and before Regikonigin stood a Golurk.
The Pheromosa's aura surged as it roared and charged towards Regikonigin.
Regikonigin nimbly leaped onto Golurk's back.
A powerful wave of spiritual energy swept through the area, causing the ghostly energy of the Golurk to surge and boil.
In an instant, countless purple-blue will-o'-the-wisps silently appeared around Regikonigin.
With a wave of Regikonigin's right hand, the myriad of will-o'-the-wisps rained down on the Pheromosa like shooting stars.
The man, who had been stunned by the previous events, was now completely dumbfounded.
That was... what Pokemon?!
