Chapter 253: If It Weren't for Me
Chapter 253: If It Weren’t for Me
Harry and his friends only had one Transfiguration class this morning. After the class ended, they still had over an hour before lunch.
Before that, they had already figured out Sherlock’s current state, knowing that he had asked Mad-Eye Moody to substitute for him and was taking a leave of absence to stay in his office.
After class, the three of them calculated the timing and headed toward Sherlock’s office together.
Indeed, Hermione had come up with a way to break the curse.
Since they couldn’t get Sherlock to say the curse under normal circumstances, they would have to receive a positive blessing under abnormal conditions.
From their multiple tests on Sherlock, they remembered very clearly that in one particular state, Sherlock’s Jinxed Mouth would completely reverse, turning into a Wishing Machine that would make whatever he said come true!
This happened when he was testing whether he was a Jinxed Mouth.
In this state, Sherlock would become a true god, making whatever he said happen!
These were the results of experiments that Harry and his friends had conducted at great risk.
Now was the time to put their findings to use. If they could make Sherlock doubt himself and speak a blessing for them, it would counteract the previous curse and allow Harry and his friends to return to a normal life.
They might even get a bit lucky in the future.
With everything planned out, they knocked on the door of Sherlock’s office immediately after the Transfiguration class ended.
“Who is it? Come in.”
A weak, lifeless voice came from inside the office.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione exchanged glances, not noticing anything too strange but assuming that the professor must be unwell. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have asked Mad-Eye Moody to substitute for him.
They pushed the door open and walked in. As soon as they entered, they saw Sherlock lying on the sofa, his arms resting on his stomach, and his face blank as he stared at the ceiling.
Harry hesitated as he asked, “Professor, I heard you haven’t been feeling well lately?”
Sherlock didn’t even lift his head to look at them. Although he was feeling better today than yesterday, he was still deeply depressed, seeing the world in shades of gray and feeling that everyone’s future was bleak. He thought it would be better to die and be reborn.
Hearing Harry’s voice and the obvious sound of more than one person, he could guess with his toes who had come to his office.
“I do feel a bit unwell, but it’s not too bad. After all, I can’t die, um~ even if I did, it wouldn’t make much of a difference.”
His despondent words made Harry and his friends swallow hard. They all felt that Professor Forrest seemed particularly down today.
But they had a plan, and they were already here, so they had to push through and continue with their prepared speech.
“Er, Professor,” Hermione, who was always the best at wording things, began, “We’ve been thinking about the Jinxed Mouth experiment we did with you last semester. We feel that just three incidents aren’t enough to confirm our suspicions, so...”
She suddenly found herself unable to continue as she said this.
When they were planning it, it didn’t seem so bad, but now that she had said it out loud, Hermione felt that the excuse was just too weak. Professor Forrest would surely kick them out after hearing it!
Clearly, Harry and Ron had also noticed this. Their lips were trembling and pale, their faces filled with despair as they waited for Sherlock to tell them to get lost.
However, things took an unexpected turn.
Sherlock, lying on the sofa, remained as melancholic and lazy as ever. He tried to sit up but quickly gave up on the idea. Then, in a voice drenched in despair, he said,
“Ah, perhaps you’re right. I do tend to bring bad luck to those around me.”
His tone grew inexplicably somber as he continued, his words directed at Harry and the others, or perhaps just to himself.
“Selena’s son is dead. Eddie is dead. Amy spent over a decade under the control of her incomprehensible mother. Hogwarts is in danger now, and who knows how many students will die.”
Harry, Ron, and Hermione were all stunned. They had never imagined Sherlock would say such despondent, self-blaming words.
“Perhaps if I hadn’t been there, none of this would have happened. Ah, I’m trying to make amends, but who knows if it will do any good?”
He stared at the ceiling, the oppressive mood spreading throughout the room, infecting Harry and the others. They felt a heavy weight in their chests, as if they were holding in a breath they couldn’t release.
“Perhaps the voices I heard through the Fidelius Charm were right. They were the future outcomes of those I’ve come into contact with. No one will have a good end. No one will live in peace, because I am a harbinger of disaster, a crow that brings nothing but calamity.”
Harry fell silent, while Hermione and Ron’s despair deepened.
They knew Sherlock’s current state all too well. He was convinced that he was a Jinxed Mouth, and whatever he said would come true.
So, the words he had just spoken, “No one will have a good end. No one will live in peace,” would become reality!
They had never imagined Sherlock would say such things, but he had, and at the worst possible time!
It was as if the cheerful Professor Forrest who had wished them a lifetime of happiness yesterday was a completely different person. This realization left Hermione and Ron feeling utterly hopeless.
Two layers of curses, doubled in effect, made their future seem bleak and devoid of any light.
But Harry’s reaction was different. He gritted his teeth, lips pressed together, and his fists clenched tightly. In the dead silence of the office, he suddenly spoke out loud.
“It’s not like you think, Professor!”
Ron and Hermione stared at Harry in surprise. Even Sherlock, who had been lying on the sofa without the energy to move a finger, turned his head to look at him.
Harry looked agitated, his body trembling slightly, his eyes wide as he spoke to Sherlock with intense earnestness.
“I don’t know about the people who died because of you! But Professor, you are not a crow that only brings disaster!”
