Chapter 252: Uchiha: From Warring States Rivals to Clan Annihilation
Chapter 252: Uchiha: From Warring States Rivals to Clan Annihilation
"Material One:
During the Warring States era, there existed two powerful ninja clans: the Senju clan, who valued love, and the Uchiha clan, who prized power. The two clans were locked in a bitter rivalry, and any mention of the other clan's name would incite an immediate attack.
However, the leader of the Uchiha clan, Madara Uchiha, shared a unique friendship with the head of the Senju clan, Hashirama Senju. Through several victories, Hashirama Senju eventually moved Madara Uchiha, leading to a reconciliation between the two clans and the founding of Konoha.
Hashirama Senju supported Madara Uchiha's ambition to become the Hokage, and Madara himself aspired to the position. Yet, when the time came to elect the Hokage, the entire population of Konoha, across all clans and residents, threw their support behind Hashirama Senju, who ultimately became the First Hokage."
"Based on the content of the material and your historical knowledge, analyze why Madara Uchiha was ultimately unsuccessful, and elucidate the reasons for Hashirama Senju's triumph," Mu Yue said, looking at her students expectantly after finishing the passage.
Even Stop, who had already answered the question, wore a thoughtful expression, knowing that Mu Yue hadn't given him a high score.
Dattebayo scratched his head, feeling that this question was more difficult than any history exam he had ever taken. The textbooks barely mentioned Madara Uchiha, and all he recalled was that Madara was a villain who had defected and caused immense harm to Konoha.
"Could it be because Madara Uchiha was a missing-nin?" Dattebayo wondered aloud, reasoning that it made sense for a missing-nin to be disqualified from becoming the Hokage.
However, he stopped short of voicing this thought, considering that perhaps the election for Hokage had taken place before Madara's defection.
"Because the Uchiha clan valued power and didn't have a good reputation, everyone supported the Senju clan, who valued love," Kakashi answered after some thought.
This perception wasn't limited to the Warring States era; even in the present day, the Uchiha clan in Konoha was largely viewed in a similar light.
"Except for Dattebayo, of course," Kakashi added silently in his mind, acknowledging that Dattebayo was an anomaly among the Uchiha.
"What do you mean by 'valuing power and not having a good reputation'? You're slandering me, Kakashi!" Dattebayo exclaimed indignantly.
"Is it possible that you're not a typical Uchiha, and I'm just answering the question as it's presented?" Kakashi replied nonchalantly.
"That's partially correct," Mu Yue said, giving a score. "Out of ten points, I can give you four."
"Only four points...?" Kakashi continued to ponder the question.
"Because Hashirama Senju's youth burned more passionately than Madara Uchiha's!" Might Guy blurted out his answer after some contemplation.
"Half a point for effort," Mu Yue said, awarding a small score for Guy's attempt.
Dattebayo and Rin also offered their answers, but neither of their scores surpassed Kakashi's.
"Kakashi's answer is correct but incomplete," Mu Yue explained. "It's not just that the Uchiha clan and Madara Uchiha had a worse reputation, but also because the Senju clan and Hashirama Senju were the victors of the war."
"Madara Uchiha reconciled with the Senju clan after losing the war to them. Essentially, the Uchiha clan had been defeated, which sets them apart from other ninja clans that voluntarily joined Konoha," she continued.
"One side was the winner, and the other was the loser. Naturally, people would favor the winning side with a better reputation, even if Hashirama Senju himself wanted Madara Uchiha to become the Hokage. His followers wouldn't have agreed," Mu Yue concluded, providing the comprehensive answer.
In Mu Yue's opinion, this question was relatively straightforward and didn't require an in-depth understanding of the subject matter.
"Why is that so? I don't understand. Didn't they reconcile and become allies? Why does the outcome of the war still matter?" Dattebayo asked, perplexed.
He could comprehend why Hashirama Senju received more support, but he struggled to grasp why everyone had unanimously backed Hashirama, especially when Hashirama himself supported Madara Uchiha.
"Even if Madara Uchiha considered others as allies, they might not have reciprocated those sentiments. Moreover, the interests of various clans are also at play here," Mu Yue patiently elaborated, addressing Dattebayo's query.
Mu Yue appreciated Dattebayo's kindness, but she wanted him to understand that not everyone shared his benevolent nature.
When Mu Yue began explaining how the appointment of the Hokage affected the interests of different clans, Dattebayo grew even more confused. He could understand the individual words, but when they were put together, he found the concept elusive.
Mu Yue scanned the class and noticed that only Kakashi and Stop could barely keep up. Kakashi's maturity gave him an edge, while Stop, being an Uchiha himself, could relate to the topic more deeply.
Unconcerned by the students' struggles, Mu Yue continued on to the next question.
"After the death of the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, his younger brother, Tobirama Senju, assumed the role of the Second Hokage. To prevent the emergence of another Madara Uchiha, he integrated the Uchiha clan by establishing the Konoha Police Force, tasked with maintaining law and order in the village. Tobirama Senju entrusted the Uchiha clan with the full authority to manage the Police Force, granting them jurisdiction over the village's security.
Not long after the establishment of the Police Force, a faction within the Uchiha clan attempted to rebel and seize the position of Hokage. They were ultimately defeated by the efforts of the Anbu. From that point on, the Anbu kept a watchful eye on the Uchiha clan, and their reputation gradually deteriorated, causing them to be disliked by many ninja clans and villagers."
"Based on the above material, analyze the impact of the Konoha Police Force on the Uchiha clan and elucidate the reasons for their disfavor among the public."
Concerned that some students might not fully grasp the roles of the Anbu and the Konoha Police Force, Mu Yue took the time to explain the functions of these two organizations.
"It's not that everyone dislikes every Uchiha. Your kindness, Obito, has won the hearts of the villagers," Mu Yue explained with a smile.
"Yeah, Obito is really popular with the elderly ladies. It seems like everyone loves him," Rin added, nodding in agreement.
Obito's face turned slightly red from the praise of the two people he cared about. He chuckled and said, "It's just that everyone is so friendly."
Itachi felt a deep resonance with these words. Indeed, Obito was the only Uchiha he knew who was well-liked by the villagers, and Itachi had to admit that he himself didn't have the same level of popularity.
Kakashi, deep in thought, looked up and offered his analysis: "The Konoha Police Force granted the Uchiha clan significant authority, which led to their sense of entitlement and desire for even greater power. This ultimately resulted in their rebellion. The Uchiha clan's reputation suffered because people disliked their rebellious nature, and having Uchiha with ill intentions maintaining law and order could further aggravate the residents."
"Itachi, do you have any new insights to share?" Mu Yue asked, looking at Itachi instead of rushing to give Kakashi a score.
"My thoughts are similar to Kakashi's," Itachi began, "but regarding the rebellion, I believe it's connected to Uchiha Madara's previous defection. After all, Madara was the clan leader and had a strong influence on many Uchiha."
Mu Yue nodded, then turned to the other students for their opinions.
"I feel like the Konoha Police Force reduced interactions between the Uchiha and outsiders," Obito shared. "Recently, an Uchiha clan elder suggested that I join the Police Force directly after graduation. As for why they're disliked, I can't quite figure it out."
"Good answer, Obito," Mu Yue smiled and nodded in encouragement.
Whether it was a coincidence or not, Obito had inadvertently touched upon a key point.
Obito's face lit up with a smile, feeling that his theory might not be so far-fetched after all.
After hearing everyone's responses, Mu Yue revealed the answer. This question was far more challenging than the previous one, as it delved into the core issues surrounding the Uchiha clan.
"The authority granted by the Konoha Police Force inflated the Uchiha clan's ego," Mu Yue began. "Simultaneously, with a large number of Uchiha joining the force, the clan became increasingly insular, interacting far less with outsiders. The fact that a single clan controlled an entire department bred wariness and suspicion among other clans and residents.
The Uchiha's growing insularity fostered a sense of arrogance among its members. Managing law and order in this state bred more troubles, leading to a proliferation of negative news about the Uchiha. Moreover, the rebellion made the Konoha leadership more vigilant towards the Uchiha, ultimately widening the rift between them and tarnishing their reputation further."
There were other factors Mu Yue didn't mention, such as assigning many Uchiha to the Police Force, providing them with a more comfortable environment that could reduce the occurrence of Sharingan and Mangekyo Sharingan, thus weakening the overall power of the Uchiha clan.
However, delving into such conspiracy theories might be a step too far at this point. A gradual approach was necessary.
Mu Yue truly believed that Tobirama was a genius. Aside from his inferior strength compared to Hashirama, he excelled in every other aspect. With the creation of the Konoha Police Force, he had successfully guided the Uchiha clan to their demise.
The more Shisui listened, the more astonished he became. As he reflected on Mu Yue's words, he realized that everything she said was spot on.
Even Uchiha Fugaku, the current clan leader, had personally approached Shisui, offering to use his influence to secure an early transfer into the Police Force.
Shisui was genuinely shaken by the realization that the very institution that had brought pride to the Uchiha clan had also brought them so much trouble.
"Did the Second Hokage foresee this outcome from the beginning, or was it due to the Uchiha's own nature?" Shisui wondered silently.
"This is so complicated," Obito sighed. "I had no idea your usual tests were this difficult, Shisui."
"Hmm? Aren't your tests like this?" Shisui asked, surprised, as he had assumed Obito had been taking similar tests.
"Of course not," Obito replied, handing over his test paper for Shisui to inspect.
Shisui examined Obito's test paper and was perplexed. These were standard Ninja Academy exam questions, which didn't require much thought.
"Although it's the same training, I tailor the questions to match your individual levels," Mu Yue clarified.
His teaching methods were highly personalized, even when it came to pursuing Obito and Shisui's shadow clones; he adjusted his speed accordingly.
Of course, once Obito graduated, the questions would become identical to Shisui's, as it would be time for Obito to step up and mature.
Mu Yue lectured for an hour and a half, then allowed the students a half-hour break before commencing the afternoon training.
This chapter is 3k words. Initially, I considered briefly mentioning "Mu Yue enhancing their knowledge through lectures" and moving on, but in the end, I decided to elaborate on this turning point to avoid a disjointed feel in the character development.
Good night, everyone. I hope to fall asleep early tonight; my head is already starting to ache.
