Chapter 251: Sylphorian's Extraordinary Lineage
Chapter 251: Sylphorian's Extraordinary Lineage
Sylphorian sat on a sofa in front of a short-legged long table in the center of the grand hall, gazing at the Saintess and the mural behind her in silence for a moment.
In this ethereal hall, honed by millennia of faith, the faint natural light filtering through the window panes onto the white bas-reliefs gave the impression that the variously shaped divine portraits were shimmering, as if they were bringing ancient legends to life.
"Efatia is my mother's name."
After a moment, Sylphorian nodded in acknowledgment.
Although she had never heard of the name Talia, her father had once told her that her mother's real name was Efatia.
Sylphorian felt that since the Ice Snow Witch had asked this question, she must already have her suspicions, and there was no point in deceiving her.
Moreover, the Ice Snow Witch was someone who could help her now, and she should try to trust her.
"Indeed."
On the other side of the table, the Ice Snow Witch showed no change in expression, as if she had already guessed as much upon seeing Sylphorian in person,
"You are the descendant princess of the Demon Tribe."
"?"
Sylphorian pointed to herself, bewildered and surprised.
"With both Princess Efatia and Princess Talia missing, you are the only remaining descendant of the Demon King."
The Ice Snow Witch explained calmly.
"This..."
Sylphorian's mind suddenly felt clouded, struggling to process this information.
She had never imagined that her mother held such an identity.
According to her father, her mother had mostly portrayed herself as a naive and lively young girl, and although it was just an act to disguise herself as human, by the end even Duke Migaya couldn't distinguish how much of it was genuine and how much was a facade.
As for this Talia from the Demon Tribe, Sylphorian had never even heard of her.
"Now, including me, there should only be seven Great Demons still alive in this world."
The Ice Snow Witch continued in a dispassionate tone,
"All the warmongering Great Demons have perished in battle. The surviving Great Demons were those who chose not to participate in the war. If they know that you are Efatia's daughter, they will give you some degree of respect."
"Is it because of my lineage?"
"Not entirely. It's because Efatia's vengeance is terrifying."
"..."
Sylphorian couldn't quite discern if the Saintess was praising or disparaging her mother.
"So, the few Great Demons still alive in the world, are they all like you, opposed to the war?" Sylphorian inquired further.
She had a vague understanding—the Ice Snow Witch probably hoped that she could help solicit assistance from the other Great Demons.
There were no free rides, and this was a form of screening. Perhaps the other six Great Demons were also the most promising candidates for peaceful coexistence with humans.
"I am a pacifist, the two princesses chose to abstain from the war, the three in the Imperial Prison are conservatives, and there's one who advocated surrender."
The Ice Snow Witch rose from her seat and walked to the bookshelf nearby, her eyes scanning the spines of the books as she spoke with her back turned to Sylphorian.
The floor was paved with clear stone slabs, each meticulously polished to a smooth finish, their faint patterns resembling the traces of time and water. As the Ice Snow Witch walked, her footsteps made barely any sound, as if she were walking in the embrace of the divine.
"..."
The factions were clear.
Those who opposed the war became the Saintess, those who abstained went into exile, the conservatives were imprisoned, and the fate of the one who advocated surrender was unknown.
Among those whose whereabouts were known, there were only the Ice Snow Witch and the three in prison.
"How can I help you?"
"It would be an unimaginable boon to the Kingdom of Aether Teland and the Church of the Goddess of Fate if we could be of assistance, and as a follower of the Goddess of Fate, it is only right that I offer my help."
"Perhaps it will even make up for the debt Ranchi owes."
"It might even be enough for him to squander for several more years."
"I would like to entrust you with a crucial task. Sneak into the Empire and make contact with the three Great Demons in prison. At least one of them will give you some face, and I hope that you can bring her back."
The Ice Snow Witch took the last atlas from the bookshelf, carried several books back to the sofa, and spread them out on the table. She pointed to a location on the map and made an earnest request to Sylphorian.
"Why would one of the Great Demons listen to me?"
Sylphorian looked at the location the Ice Snow Witch was pointing to, which happened to be the imperial capital of the Protoss Empire, and then at the Ice Snow Witch's face.
"Did you know that your mother, Efatia, actually has an older sister named Talia?"
The Ice Snow Witch sighed.
"I've never heard my father mention it," Sylphorian said, shaking her head, although she had already guessed the relationship between the two princesses from the previous conversation.
She had also just learned that she had an equally missing aunt.
"One of the Great Demons in prison has a close relationship with your aunt, Talia. If she knows about your blood relationship with Talia, she won't make things difficult for you, and she'll even try to protect you. So she's the one we must try to rescue."
The Ice Snow Witch took out several paintings from between the book pages and spread them out on the table. Each painting depicted a portrait of a Great Demon.
"Most importantly, her abilities are exceptional. She is a skilled Demon physician and coordinator. Once the war breaks out, whether it's defending the rear lines or leading the logistics, she will play an irreplaceable role."
However, as Sylphorian listened to the Ice Snow Witch's narrative and looked at the paintings on the table, she felt that something was amiss.
She had seen photos of her mother at home, and they didn't look as abstract as the ones in the paintings.
But she dared not ask who the artist was, lest it turned out to be the Ice Snow Witch herself, which would be embarrassing.
"Unfortunately, Talia has gone missing. After rescuing this Great Demon, she will likely want to go and search for Talia immediately. I ask that you help us in persuading her to stay and assist the Kingdom of Aether Teland first. We will also promise her that no matter how difficult it may be, we will help her find clues to Talia's whereabouts."
The Ice Snow Witch said helplessly.
If it weren't for the glimmer of hope she saw in Sylphorian that could gain this Great Demon's assistance, she wouldn't have considered venturing into the Empire's prison.
"What about the other two Great Demons?" Sylphorian asked, remembering that the Ice Snow Witch had mentioned a total of three Great Demons in captivity.
Those who were considered Great Demons in the ancient Demon kingdom were at least eighth-rank or above, and any one of them held a significant position of power within the Demon race.
"Don't even think about trying to control those two; they are loyalists to the Demon race and are simply conservative by nature."
The Ice Snow Witch seemed to have little interaction with those two Great Demons, as her tone became more distant when she mentioned them.
To her, only the two princesses were acquaintances she was closer to.
Although the other two Great Demons possessed alternative talents comparable to the Blood Race's authority, they were unlikely to be willing to fight for another race and could only become unstable factors on the battlefield.
Unless it was absolutely necessary, the Ice Snow Witch did not want to take the huge risk of releasing them.
