Chapter 251: Depressed Sherlock
Chapter 251: Depressed Sherlock
Madam Pomfrey almost used up all the Sadness Potions in the Hospital Wing, but even then, it wasn't enough for Sherlock's needs.
She had to ask Silke to borrow some from Snape.
Although they had just had a fight, and Snape was still sulking in his office, he still handed over all his Sadness Potion reserves to Silke, despite his obvious reluctance.
In times of need, Snape was still reliable.
In the end, Madam Pomfrey concentrated over a dozen Sadness Potions and administered them to Sherlock. This finally calmed his agitated state, and he began to sit still in a chair, his face growing increasingly somber.
"Because he was overexcited, I had to increase the dosage. This will help stabilize his emotions, but he will remain in a depressed state for a few days. Once he recovers, his mental state will improve."
Madam Pomfrey initially wanted to keep Sherlock in the Hospital Wing for observation, but the now calm Sherlock, who had transformed from a "silly" Sherlock to a "depressed" Sherlock, refused.
"I have important matters to attend to, so I must leave. Otherwise, the entire Hogwarts will be in danger."
Sherlock sighed, his gaze fixed on the ceiling, his face troubled.
"How long will I be in this state?"
Madam Pomfrey looked at him seriously.
"At least three days. Your mind needs time to adapt and return to normal. Even after you recover, you must avoid using the Patronus Charm excessively. It directly affects your spirit and soul, and reaching the extreme of any emotion is extremely dangerous. Using one extreme to suppress another is even more perilous."
In his depressed state, Sherlock tended to think the worst. He could now imagine the consequences if his mind couldn't handle such intense positive emotions.
By then, he would surely be a textbook case, known to all future wizards as the only Defense Against the Dark Arts professor to go mad from overusing the Patronus Charm.
"Alright, I'll try to avoid using it again."
Sherlock, sitting in the chair, propped his face with both hands, looking deeply melancholic.
Madam Pomfrey sighed heavily and continued.
"I know it's unrealistic to never use it again, but if you must, don't follow it with a Sadness Potion. It's fine once or twice, but frequent emotional extremes will cause irreparable damage to your mind. And if you don't use enough, the heightened emotions will rebound, which is the real issue."
Sherlock listened to her, and Silke, who was there, noted every word.
After leaving the Hospital Wing with a dejected Sherlock, Silke accompanied him back to his office.
"For the next few days, I'll have Mad-Eye Moody take over my Defense Against the Dark Arts classes", Sherlock said, slouching on his desk, his voice weak. "In my current state, it would be irresponsible to teach the students."
"Also, could you ask Professor Mcgonagall to come over? I need to tell her about the situation in the Room of Requirement."
Sherlock's current state indeed made it unsuitable for him to wander the castle, but Silke could help relay messages.
Before long, not only Professor Mcgonagall, but also the other three heads of house—Flitwick, Snape, and Professor Sprout—arrived at Sherlock's office.
In Dumbledore's absence, all the key figures at Hogwarts Castle gathered here.
On the way, Silke had already informed Professor Mcgonagall and the others about Sherlock's current condition, but seeing him slumped over the desk still gave them a shock.
"How could it be this serious? How much Sadness Potion did he drink?" Professor Mcgonagall's expression was extremely grave.
"Don't worry, Professor Mcgonagall. Worrying won't help, since we're all going to die eventually anyway."
Sherlock lifted his upper body from the desk, looking like an invertebrate, utterly limp.
"I've already faced off against that Straw Golem, and it's indeed much more troublesome than before. The Patronus Charm used to be like a deadly poison to it, but now someone has helped it, making up for its weakness."
"You are all experienced professors. Have any of you heard of a crown-like alchemical artifact in the Wizarding World that can resist the Patronus Charm?"
The four headmasters exchanged glances.
They were indeed well-versed wizards in the Wizarding World, their knowledge and insights always at the pinnacle.
Professor Flitwick, the shortest of them, frowned and paced back and forth in the office.
"There are many crown-like alchemical artifacts in the Wizarding World, as some wizards believe that items symbolizing royal power inherently possess special forces. However, alchemical artifacts capable of resisting the Patronus Charm are quite rare."
Professor Sprout nodded in agreement.
"The Patronus Charm is a highly unique spell, almost as unique as the Killing Curse, which has no counter-curse. This incredibly righteous spell is effective against dark creatures but has little use in normal wizard duels, so few wizards would create an alchemical artifact specifically to counter it."
Professor Mcgonagall shook her head.
"I have not heard of such an alchemical artifact in the Wizarding World either."
As the office fell silent and the already depressed Sherlock became even more melancholic, Snape, who had been silent all along, suddenly spoke up.
"I once heard of a concept for such an alchemical artifact."
Instantly, all eyes turned to him.
Snape's cold expression remained unchanged, and he continued in his deep, somber voice.
"In my first year of joining that organization, one of the person's followers proposed a plan to break the deadlock in the Wizarding World by allying with the Dementors on Azkaban Island. To make these Dementors more effective, someone suggested creating a special alchemical artifact to help them resist their greatest fear, the Patronus Charm."
"This plan was eagerly accepted by that person, as they believed the Dementors' defection might be the final straw to tip the balance. However, before the plan could be fully implemented, that person disappeared. You know what happened afterward, and the matter was dropped."
