Chapter 251: An Unknown Opponent
Chapter 251: An Unknown Opponent
You Xuan narrowed his eyes, suspecting that an extraordinary ability was at play, and the perpetrator was likely no novice.
As expected, the Silent Magician appeared beside him, floating with a worried expression, guarding him protectively.
"You think our opponent is no ordinary duelist?" You Xuan nodded, "I know. Don't worry, I understand."
This trip with the president was intended not only to play some duels but also to scout for new cards. Moreover, the unique design of the opponent's Duel Disk and their unknown deck further piqued his interest.
"Then let's begin."
You Xuan unfolded his Duel Disk.
"The sooner we start, the sooner we finish."
"Whoa, you're not nervous at all and quite confident," the masked man smiled, "Confidence in the youth is not a bad thing, but does your strength match it?"
He left the sentence hanging, but his implication was clear: the proof was in the dueling.
"Duel!" x2
You Xuan: LP 4000
Masked Man: LP 4000
"I'll go first. Draw!"
You Xuan drew two cards.
"I summon a monster in attack position to the front main monster zone and set a card in the backrow. That's the end of my turn."
"My turn, draw!" The masked man said hoarsely, "I activate 'Greed Jar' to draw two cards from my deck."
After drawing, he immediately played another card from his hand.
"I activate the magic card 'Angel's Charity' to draw three cards from my deck and then discard two cards from my hand."
You Xuan raised an eyebrow.
While 'Greed Jar' and 'Angel's Charity' were commonly used in the GX era, it was rare to see them used consecutively right at the start of a duel.
"I activate the quick-play spell card 'Toy Box'!" The masked man continued, "Discard one card to special summon three 'Robot Tokens'!" (Original Card)
A card from his hand was discarded to the graveyard, and three small robots with a toy-like texture appeared on his field.
Robot Token: ATK 0 / DEF 0
"These tokens cannot attack, but they can be used as tributes." The masked man said coldly, "So, I tribute two 'Robot Tokens' to tribute summon!
From chaos, a source of disaster, a devil of calamity emerges—
—I summon Disaster Devil!"
The two robots transformed into specks of light and dissipated, as thick black clouds covered the sky like a massive dark curtain. A storm began to howl, sweeping up leaves and dust. The swirling winds in the air let out an ear-piercing roar.
The ground split open, spewing lava and black smoke, painting the arena with an apocalyptic hue. A tall, dark devil rose from the depths, its body covered in hard scales, and its eyes burning with the black flames of hell.
Disaster Devil: ATK 2000
"The effect of Disaster Devil activates once per turn, letting me destroy one card on the field for each player!" The masked man shouted, "I destroy the third 'Robot Token' on my field and your set card in the backrow!"
Disaster Devil bellowed, and two spirals of hellfire rose. The masked man's third robot melted in the black flames, and You Xuan's set card in the backrow was also engulfed, turning into a black ashen cloud.
Trap Card - Magic Cylinder
You Xuan raised his arm to block the after-effects of the hellfire.
"Magic Cylinder, huh? If I attack recklessly, I'll be the one taking the big damage." The masked man said calmly as he played another card from his hand, "I activate the magic card 'Shield Crush' to destroy face-down defense position monsters.
Your face-down monster is destroyed."
The green glow of the magic card pierced through, shattering the face-down monster in the front main monster zone.
"Hmm, you're not bad," acknowledged You Xuan with a nod.
"I'm not like the third-rate characters you usually deal with. You'll be at a disadvantage if you treat me like those other duelists." The masked man stated nonchalantly, casually waving his hand.
"Direct attack from Disaster Devil!"
Disaster Devil leaped over the spaces in You Xuan's arena, cleared of monsters, and its claws descended without hindrance. You Xuan raised his Duel Disk to block, but the impact of the holographic projection passed through the disk, causing his body to shake and stagger backward.
[You Xuan: LP 4000 → LP 2000]
"Hmm?" You Xuan noticed something peculiar.
This pain...
It doesn't seem that bad?
Contrary to his expectations of a violent impact from a Dark Duel, it felt like a regular Duel's normal impact.
However, there was no doubt that his opponent possessed formidable dark powers, as Silent had just warned him. You Xuan gave the masked man a curious glance.
Had his opponent not initiated a Dark Duel?
Why not?
"As I said," the masked man replied coldly, "if you don't bring your true skills to bear against me, you will be instantly defeated."
You Xuan smiled faintly.
"Perhaps. But how dare you assume that just by clearing my monsters and magic traps, you've dismantled my setup?"
"Oh?"
The masked man frowned, and then, to his surprise, shadows appeared out of thin air on the empty arena in front of You Xuan.
An eerie, unsettling shadow writhed slowly on the ground, then gradually rose, its body twisting unnaturally until it transformed into a humanoid shape.
Finally, it took on the form of a warrior with a sword.
"The effect of 'Messenger of Chaos - Grepher' in my hand," You Xuan revealed a card, "When there are no other cards on my field and I take battle damage, this card is Special Summoned.
Additionally, Special Summon one 'Messenger of Chaos - Kain' token, whose ATK and DEF become the same as the damage I took."
[Messenger of Chaos - Grepher: ATK 2700]
[Messenger of Chaos - Kain Token: ATK 2000]
Like Mutou Yuugi, this card made its debut in a spin-off manga. When it was finally released as an actual card, it immediately had a huge impact on the Duel Monsters competitive scene, becoming a must-have powerhouse for almost all decks.
The ability to instantly summon a 2700-ATK monster after taking damage made it a game-changer, and duelists had to assume their opponents had a Grepher in hand if they passed their turn without summoning. Many times, even if they didn't have one, duelists would deliberately pass their turn to deceive their opponents.
As a result, Messenger of Chaos was restricted to one copy per deck during the latter part of the GX era and well into the early Synchro era, attesting to its enduring power.
"I see, holding your trump card close to your chest. It seems I've underestimated you."
The masked man's light laughter sounded a bit odd due to the voice changer.
"Then, I'll end my turn by setting one card face-down."
