Chapter 250: A Dream to End the War
Chapter 250: A Dream to End the War
At noon, in the Southern Forest, Obito showed Rin the photos he had developed.
"Rin, what do you think? Aren't these photos great?" Obito asked, his fingers fidgeting with his clothes as he anxiously awaited her opinion, drawing circles on the ground.
Rin, who had been intently studying the photos, paused and nodded with a smile. She then pressed her hands together and said, "They're wonderful. These wildflowers are so beautiful, flourishing on their own in nature."
"Hehe, I thought so too, that's why I took the pictures," Obito said, feeling instantly relieved.
Seeing the delighted smile on Rin's face, he felt that his efforts had been well worth it. It wasn't just luck that had captured these beautiful scenes; he had put in thought and effort to find them.
"If you like them, Rin, next time I see pretty flowers, I'll pick some for you. Muketsu-sensei should know how to preserve them," Obito offered.
Rin shook her head gently and declined with a soft voice, "Thank you, Obito, but it's alright. We already captured their beauty with the camera, there's no need to pluck them."
She felt that the wildflowers had a tough life in the dangerous wilderness and didn't want to subject them to further harm. It was best to let them grow naturally in their environment, as different flowers had different needs and might not survive if brought elsewhere.
"That's true," Obito nodded. "Flowers wither quickly, but photos, if preserved properly, can last a long time."
"Cameras are truly amazing inventions. I wonder how those people came up with such ingenious ideas," Obito marveled.
With his knowledge, he couldn't fathom how cameras worked—how a simple click could capture an image. It was like magic, akin to ninjutsu.
But Obito didn't let that bother him. Not understanding the principle didn't stop him from using it.
"It's indeed amazing, but cameras aren't omnipotent," Rin mused. "Hand-drawn paintings have a unique feel that cameras can't capture, and there are things that cameras can't record, like dreams."
"Speaking of dreams, what's your dream, Rin?" Obito asked curiously.
He racked his brains but couldn't recall any related memories. Although students were supposed to introduce themselves when they first entered the academy as freshmen, sharing their dreams wasn't mandatory.
"My dream," Rin began, her eyes gazing skyward, "is to save more people injured in wars and, ideally, to end wars altogether."
"Is it strange for a girl to have such a dream? I'm not good at fighting, yet I dream of ending wars," Rin turned to Obito, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
Unlike Kakashi, Obito, Might Guy, and Asuma, who were all born into ninja families, Rin's background was different. Her parents were ordinary civilians, and no one in her extended family was a ninja.
Rin had decided to attend the ninja academy on her own initiative; it wasn't her parents' decision.
It wasn't because she envied the large sums ninjas earned from missions or their formidable strength. It was because, when she was very young, a neighbor she was close to, an older girl, had died in the war.
Ever since then, the brutality of war had been seared into Rin's mind, and she had developed this dream.
That was why Rin admired Tsunade, one of the Sannin. Tsunade could not only heal injured comrades with her medical ninjutsu but also play a significant role in battles.
"Not at all, I think it's wonderful," Obito said excitedly, standing up. "After going to the battlefield, I realized how cruel wars are. It feels like every minute, someone—whether a comrade or an enemy—dies."
"So, my dream isn't just to become the Hokage anymore," Obito continued, his voice passionate as he clenched his fists. "I want to end wars. I want to make sure this cruelty never happens again!"
Hearing that Rin also wanted to put an end to wars, Obito was thrilled. Sharing the same dream with the person he loved was incredible.
Obito's mind wandered to the future, imagining himself and Rin working together to make their dream come true.
"With you, Obito, and Kakashi, who knows, maybe we can really make it happen," Rin said, her hands behind her back and a faraway look in her eyes.
Obito thought that the name 'Kakashi' could be omitted from that sentence.
"Come on, graduation exam, hurry up and get here," Obito muttered to himself. "Rin spends so much time with Kakashi; he's influencing her too much."
Obito felt that Kakashi's sudden appearance had ruined the mood. He couldn't wait to graduate and disband the team, so Kakashi wouldn't have as many opportunities to be around Rin.
However, what troubled Obito was that after graduation, he might not get to see Rin as often.
"Six Paths Sage, please bless us. Muketsu-sensei, Shijima-sensei, and Shimaku-sensei, please bless us too... Please let Rin and me be assigned to the same team," Obito silently prayed to every deity he could think of.
Although Shijima and Shimaku didn't seem very reliable as sages, Obito figured that living for eight hundred years should count for something.
"What are you muttering about?" Kakashi asked, giving Obito a suspicious look.
Kakashi thought for a moment before replying, "If nothing unexpected happens, then yes."
Although executing missions with Mu Yue always led to unexpected situations, Kakashi felt comfortable with her, and the thought of joining a new team made him a little reluctant to leave.
However, Kakashi knew that Mu Yue wouldn't continue as his jounin-sensei because she didn't lead genin teams; she was a teacher at the Ninja Academy.
Upon hearing Kakashi's reply, Madara's lips curled upward, and he couldn't help but feel delighted at the prospect of Kakashi leaving and having Rin all to himself.
"Even if I'm not on your team anymore, I'll still be your teacher. Remember to come to me for training when you have the time," Mu Yue said with a smile as she walked over.
In his second year, he intended to acquire more skills, but he was certain he could make time to teach his students. If he squeezed his schedule, he could definitely find some time.
"Of course, even after graduation, I'll definitely come to visit you often, Teacher Mu Yue," Madara quickly nodded.
After nearly a year of interacting with Mu Yue, he had unknowingly become accustomed to her presence, and Madara even contemplated continuing his training with her if his assigned jounin-sensei wasn't strong enough.
"Me too! With Teacher Mu Yue's guidance, the flames of my youth burn even brighter!" Might Guy, who was running backwards, chimed in.
"After I graduate, I'd like to come to you with questions as well, Teacher Mu Yue. I hope you don't mind," Rin said softly with a gentle smile.
"I'll come by when I have the time," Kakashi assured.
Obito observed quietly. Graduation was still a distant thought for him as a first-year student, and with Madara's team graduating, he would simply advance to the second year.
"Everyone's enthusiasm is commendable. Let's begin the afternoon training," Mu Yue smiled and announced.
"Obito and Shisui, you two finish your special training first," Mu Yue called out to the two who were about to start their regular training.
"I've seen your growth these past few days, from initially being able to dodge once to now dodging more than five times. I'm very pleased with your progress," Mu Yue praised with a beaming smile.
"It's normal to improve quickly with such a great teacher like Teacher Mu Yue," Madara replied happily.
"It's all thanks to Teacher Mu Yue's meticulous guidance," Shisui agreed with a nod.
Mu Yue truly cared for their physical and mental well-being.
"That's wonderful. To make the special training even more effective, I'll enhance the speed of my shadow clones a little. You two must focus and use the breathing technique to enhance your bodies to dodge the attacks," Mu Yue explained the changes to the special training.
"Enhance a little? How much faster are we talking about here?" Obito felt a sense of foreboding. He had just finished solving the problem recently, and he wondered if he would have to take on more debt.
"You'll find out during the training," Mu Yue replied with a gentle smile.
After ensuring they were ready, Mu Yue created a shadow clone and shouted, "Begin!"
Obito immediately focused his breathing to its most concentrated state and continued running. When he was about to be caught and couldn't escape, he tried his best to dodge but fell short by a hair's breadth.
"How is it always just a little bit short?" Obito began to doubt himself.
If he had missed by a large margin, he wouldn't have felt anything, but missing by such a slim margin made him extremely frustrated. This was two questions; a whole two questions!
"Could it be that I'm lacking in my training, which is why I always fall short during the actual exercise?" Obito felt that he needed to train even harder.
Subsequently, despite Obito's desperate attempts to dodge and the full power of his Sharingan, he still fell short by a hair's breadth.
"Obito was hit fifteen times and dodged zero times, for a total of thirty-three questions. Shisui's hits and dodges were consistent with Obito's, also totaling thirty-three questions," Mu Yue announced the results.
"Damn it, I was so close!" Obito exclaimed in frustration. If he had successfully dodged just once, he would have reduced the number of questions by five—two for the dodge itself and an additional ten percent.
"I must definitely break through," Shisui also felt the pressure, as Mu Yue's questions were no walk in the park.
"Obito, if you want to become the Hokage, you can't neglect your theoretical knowledge," Rin encouraged him.
"The number of questions doesn't matter. I just want to perform better during training," Obito quickly changed his expression and explained.
Having declared his intention to become the Hokage not long ago, he couldn't afford to back down from the questions.
"Teacher Mu Yue, I suggest doubling Obito's questions to save his theory grade," Kakashi proposed.
"Oh, in that case..." Mu Yue furrowed her brows in thought.
"Teacher Mu Yue, I think we should stick to the rules and not change the number of questions arbitrarily," Obito panicked when he saw that Mu Yue seemed to be seriously considering the idea.
Smack!
Mu Yue's finger landed precisely on Obito's forehead, and she smiled as she said, "Then make sure you finish all the questions diligently."
"Absolutely," Obito heaved a sigh of relief. His mind was already racing with thoughts of how to spar with Kakashi after the training.
