Chapter 25: Unlocking Potential Requires the Right Motivation
Chapter 25: Unlocking Potential Requires the Right Motivation
Early on Saturday morning, Obito, Kakashi, and Guy began their training under Mu Yue's guidance.
Obito first practiced basic taijutsu moves with Mu Yue. After an hour of intense training, Mu Yue instructed Obito to take a break and handed him a bottle of water, gently wiping the sweat from his brow.
Obito felt a sense of foreboding. While Mu Yue was an excellent teacher, it was unusual for her to be this considerate. Offering water was one thing, but personally wiping his sweat was going a bit too far.
"Obito, I believe there's still a lot of untapped potential within you," Mu Yue said with a cheerful smile as she tightened the cap on Obito's half-finished bottle of water and placed it on the ground.
"No, no, no, I think you've already brought out all my potential, Teacher," Obito replied, feeling a cold sweat break out on his forehead after the vigorous training.
"You tend to underestimate yourself," Mu Yue shook her head.
"How about this, during your fight with Guy, every time you get hit, you'll have to solve an extra problem during your break. I'm sure this will help unlock your true potential. And even if it doesn't, at least your theoretical knowledge will improve."
"Teacher, that's not fair," Obito protested, pretending to be concerned for Mu Yue's well-being. "If I get hit hundreds of times, it's fine for me to solve the problems, but I'm worried you'll tire yourself out from preparing all those questions."
Obito was desperate, and his wit had sharpened as a result of his predicament.
The thought of having to solve countless problems was far more torturous to Obito than an intense sparring session with Might Guy.
"Obito, I'm touched that you're concerned about my well-being," Mu Yue said, her face softening with warmth.
Just when Obito thought he might be off the hook, Mu Yue's tone changed.
"Knowing how considerate you are, I've already prepared a large stack of questions for you. There's no need to worry about running out of problems to solve." Mu Yue smiled as she produced a thick stack of test papers, indicating an endless supply of questions.
"Is this enough, or should I ask my shadow clone to prepare more?" Mu Yue asked, a playful smile on her face.
"It's enough, it's enough!" Obito frantically shook his head and waved his hands. The stack of papers Mu Yue held seemed like an insurmountable mountain to him.
Despite the warm sunshine and Mu Yue's pleasant smile, a chill ran up Obito's spine, starting from his feet and reaching his head.
Realizing that pleading with Mu Yue was futile, Obito decided to try a different approach—if he couldn't avoid the problems altogether, perhaps he could reduce the number he had to solve.
With this in mind, Obito shot a meaningful glance at Might Guy, silently pleading for some leniency.
Guy, understanding Obito's unspoken request, flashed his brilliant white teeth in a broad smile and gave Obito a confident thumbs-up.
"For Guy, if you fail to land a single hit, you'll have to solve fifty problems. Each successful hit reduces the number by one, up to a maximum of forty," Mu Yue continued.
Guy's expression suddenly turned serious, and he solemnly gave Obito another thumbs-up.
"Do I have to give it my all? Please, no," Obito cried, burying his face in his hands in despair. He could already envision a tidal wave of questions rushing toward him.
"We must give it our all for our youth! Let's reduce those problems to the bare minimum!" Guy exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with determination.
Like Obito, the last thing Guy wanted was to spend hours solving problems.
In the ensuing battle, Guy threw himself into the fight with renewed vigor, his fists a blur as he unleashed his full speed, reaching 112% of his usual pace in pursuit of Obito.
Obito, equally determined to avoid the dreaded problems, found his own potential unlocked as he deftly avoided being hit for most of the match. However, Guy's relentless assault eventually landed him a dozen or so blows.
Mu Yue watched with satisfaction as both her students displayed remarkable improvement. Their untapped potential was clearly evident.
When the two exhausted ninjas could fight no more, Mu Yue called an end to the sparring session.
"It's a shame that Noboru Rin has mediocre talent. If she were my disciple as well, spurring on Obito would be much simpler." Mu Yue thought to herself.
For the sake of keeping a low profile, she was reluctant to train anyone who wasn't her disciple.
In fact, there was an even better candidate—Kakashi Hatake.
While Noboru could only spur on Obito, Kakashi's presence would motivate both Obito and Guy.
Kakashi certainly had the talent, but it was unlikely he would become her student since he had already become a Chunin two years ago.
Mu Yue stayed with them throughout the morning, training and then joining them for lunch. Finally, she left two shadow clones and departed with her main body, heading to the home of the Third Hokage to begin her tutoring job.
Perhaps because it was still a work day, Mu Yue didn't see Hiruzen himself, but rather a middle-aged woman with a single-braided ponytail—Hiruzen's wife, Biwako Sarutobi.
"Madame Biwako," Mu Yue greeted her.
"You must be Teacher Musetsu, as described by Sarutobi," Biwako recalled, recognizing Mu Yue from Hiruzen's description.
Mu Yue nodded.
"Asuma is waiting for you in the backyard," Biwako said, pointing her in the right direction. She then added, "Asuma can be a bit rebellious, so please bear with him, Teacher Musetsu. If he's truly unmanageable, just let me know."
"I understand, but I have some special techniques for dealing with rebellious students," Mu Yue replied with a smile, heading in the direction Biwako had indicated.
In the backyard, she found a child of about nine years old, lounging against a tree with a blade of grass in his mouth, exuding an air of nonchalance.
Mu Yue performed an appraisal on him.
Name: Asuma Sarutobi
Chakra: 1100
Potential: A+
Noticing Mu Yue's arrival, Asuma spat out the grass and asked without standing up, "So you're the Musetsu guy who's supposed to teach me?"
Before Mu Yue could answer, Asuma quickly continued, "Let me tell you, if you can't make me surpass the old man, aka the Third Hokage, then just leave. This is boring."
Asuma believed in giving his new tutor a hard time, hoping to gain the upper hand from the start.
Just as Asuma wondered how Mu Yue would respond, she shook her head and said, "That's obviously impossible."
"Then just leave," Asuma waved dismissively, lying back down.
He didn't believe Mu Yue would just walk away like that.
"Alright, I'll be going then. I'll tell Madame Biwako that you don't need a tutor," Mu Yue turned to leave.
Seeing that Mu Yue was actually leaving, Asuma was taken aback. This wasn't going according to the script.
Shouldn't she be trying to persuade him not to misbehave? Why was she just walking away?
"Hey, wait a minute," Asuma jumped to his feet and stopped Mu Yue.
If his teacher left before even starting, he'd surely get an earful from his mother later.
