Chapter 25: The Harried Sheriff
Chapter 25: The Harried Sheriff
"Good! Take the bodies away and clean up the traces in the room," Hamilton nodded.
"Human skin mask?"
"Warrant?"
"Scarface?"
Upon hearing this series of keywords, Rain's heart was initially filled with confusion, but then he was startled, clearly still feeling a bit scared. He hadn't expected these two to be the wanted fugitives on the warrant, and it was pure luck that he managed to kill them both! Scarface was deceived by Rain's frail appearance and acting skills, while Blackbeard was driven by lust and focused solely on Anna.
If the two of them had been slightly more cautious, Rain might have been turned over by either of them!
However, Scarface was fooled by Rain's frail appearance and acting skills, while Blackbeard was driven by lust and focused solely on Anna.
Rain's eyes lit up as he instantly recalled the scarred bandit's nickname and the reward amount on the warrant.
So, he could also receive a handsome reward.
Rain's heart filled with delight.
"Sheriff Hamilton, about the reward..."
"You want the reward? Come to the town's administration office tomorrow to see me!" Hamilton gave Rain a half-smile, half-mocking look and then turned to leave.
Rain felt that Hamilton's gaze held some hidden meaning, and he suspected that claiming the reward the next day might not be as simple as it seemed.
The night watchmen quickly carried the bodies out of the room and the entrance, and they cleaned up the bloodstains briefly. However, the room still carried a strong smell of blood.
After all, two people had just died there.
Rain glanced at Anna, who was still shivering, and it was clear that she couldn't stay in that room for the time being.
He pondered the situation with some distress and decided that the best option was to have Anna stay at his house for now.
"Anna, please don't mention what happened tonight to my parents or Mint, okay?" Rain squatted down and gently said to Anna, who still had a frightened look in her eyes.
Anna didn't speak but nodded instinctively.
That was enough.
Rain gently hugged the already limp girl and returned to his house next door.
Perhaps because Rain was by her side, the girl fell into a deep sleep in the latter half of the night, and her long eyelashes still held traces of tears.
Although the whole incident had been resolved and Rain was exhausted, he couldn't fall asleep. The scene of the killing kept replaying in his mind, especially the distorted expressions of the two men as they died.
Suddenly, Rain remembered that the system had given him a prompt earlier, but he hadn't had a chance to check it yet.
He opened the prompt:
[You have experienced a battle. Militia Experience Points +121]
[You have experienced a battle. Militia Experience Points +129]
[Your Basic Swordsmanship skill has improved. Experience Points +34]
Rain couldn't help but exclaim in surprise.
He stared at the Militia profession panel, where his experience points had reached 328 out of 500, leaving him in a daze.
It seemed that dangerous real-life battles were the best way to gain experience points!
Although a girl was sleeping in the same room as him, the atmosphere was far from amorous or intimate.
Looking at Anna, who was curled up and sleeping in a way that revealed her extreme lack of security, Rain felt no desire for this pitiful yet resilient and optimistic fragile girl.
However, the woman who captivated Rain's heart was Celia, with her slender yet powerful legs and curvaceous figure.
The next morning, Rain went downstairs for breakfast with Anna, accompanied by the astonished gazes of his parents and the delighted smile of Mint.
"Father, someone knocked on Anna's door last night, and I thought of the recent child disappearance case, so I brought Anna over."
(End of Chapter)Recently, I suggest that Anna stays with us for a while." Rayn shared the news, mixing truth with fiction.
Old Rayn glanced at Anna, who was shyly eating with her head down, and said with a smile, "Alright, you lucky brat!"
"Rayn, you better treat Anna well!" his mother added with a mischievous smile.
This made Anna blush, and she almost buried her face in her hands on the table.
"Mother, it's not what you think!" Rayn said, touching his forehead helplessly.
"Is that so? Then let me ask you, were you and her in the same room yesterday?" his mother asked, perhaps considering Anna's presence and choosing her words carefully.
"That's because Anna was scared," Rayn explained weakly.
At this moment, Old Rayn interjected, his expression turning slightly serious. "As a man, you must learn to take responsibility. Anna is a good girl, and you must not let her down."
Oh no! Now there's a big misunderstanding!
However, facing his parents' advice, Rayn could only listen obediently and plan to clarify the truth with them later when the opportunity arises.
After breakfast, Rayn hurried to the town's administrative office, and after informing the guards at the entrance, a guard led him to Hamilton's office.
As the town's sheriff, Hamilton's position was second only to the governor.
From a certain perspective, due to his control over the town's security forces and night watch, a region's sheriff was even more important than the governor in maintaining regional stability.
"Knock, knock, knock!" the guard knocked on the door.
"Come in!" a deep, resonant voice called out.
The guard opened the door, and as Rayn entered the room, he saw Hamilton dressed in noble hunting attire, seated behind a mahogany desk, reviewing documents.
Hamilton looked up and, without any formalities, said to Rayn, "Take a seat, Rayn. I'm reviewing a case file. Just a moment!"
Rayn nodded and, after pulling out a chair to sit down, began to look around the room.
The office was bright and clean, with an area of about 40 to 50 square meters. In the central area were several soft deer-skin chairs and a tea table, while bookshelves lined the walls.
Along the wall was a mahogany desk, where Hamilton was currently seated, and on it was a large stack of parchment scrolls, presumably case files.
Before Rayn could finish examining the room, Hamilton put down the parchment scroll in his hand, looked at Rayn, and said with a smile, "Rayn, your growth has exceeded my expectations."
"Are you interested in joining the night watch squad to help me? As you can see, these case files are all unfinished cases left by that idiot Kuzma!"
"Lately, I've been short-staffed! In fact, the entire Master County's security situation isn't great. The day before yesterday, three miners went missing from the Elim Mine in the southwest of Glintstone Town. It's said that an unknown creature appeared in the gold mine, and only bloodstains were found at the scene."
"Also, just yesterday, my guards reported that they spotted traces of the fiendish Finned Fishmen upstream of our town's water source, Gleaming Lake, in the northwest. You know, those disgusting fellows seriously pollute the water! But I don't have enough manpower to drive them away!" Hamilton said, pointing to the stack of parchment case files on the mahogany desk with a hint of anger.
"Kuzma?" Rayn had heard this name before; the second-generation imposters had mentioned it during their idle chats. He was the previous sheriff of Glintstone Town, and it seemed he had left a pile of unresolved issues for the new sheriff, Hamilton, to deal with.
