Chapter 248: Panel Surge
Chapter 248: Panel Surge
【Disciples Might Guy, Kakashi Hatake, and Obito Uchiha worked hard to complete the commissioned task, gaining a growth reward of +1540 chakra. An additional reward of +770 chakra is given for being led by the teacher in person.】
The chakra settlement from the mission was roughly what Mu Yue had expected, perhaps even a little more.
In the previous crisis, the three disciples had all pushed themselves to the limit, totaling about 2,000 chakra. This time, the three of them combined had 2,310 chakra, which was already quite impressive.
The chakra gains from these two missions were almost catching up to his total chakra amount when he first crossed over. Mu Yue could only sigh at how challenging it must be for ordinary people to become ninjas.
With a slight increase in chakra, Mu Yue glanced at his panel.
【Name: Mu Yue】
【Chakra: 50,200】
【Skills: Fire Attribute Chakra Nature Alteration (Perfect: 9/80000), Haki (Perfect: 5/80000), Lightning Breath (Perfect) ... 】
Mu Yue's chakra had finally reached the small goal of 50,000 that he had set for himself. This included large amounts of chakra from missions, as well as small bonuses from exam settlements and disciple refunds. However, the biggest contributor to his chakra increase was the chakra returned by his disciples.
The mission chakra seemed abundant, giving a total of 2,310 at once, but if one were to calculate the time spent and distribute it over the number of days, it didn't seem like much.
On the other hand, the chakra returned by his disciples seemed like a small amount at a time, but with four disciples contributing, it added up. Moreover, due to Obito's recent activation of his Sharingan, his chakra growth had entered a rapid surge, providing Mu Yue with significant chakra gains.
In addition to reaching his chakra goal, Mu Yue was also pleased with his current high-level skills. He possessed three perfect-level skills and twelve skilled-level skills.
"I'll need to focus on leveling up my skills more in the second school year," Mu Yue thought to himself as he carefully reviewed all his skills.
While he had over a dozen skilled-level skills, Mu Yue felt that their overall quality was average. Out of the twelve, three were fire-style jutsu, and none of the other basic nature transformations were present. The rest were taijutsu and fuinjutsu, with the two skilled-level fuinjutsu being the Contract Seal and the Five Elements Seal, which he had learned himself.
Undoubtedly, the best skilled-level skills he had were Water Attribute Chakra Nature Alteration, Rock Breath, and Flame Breath.
If he disregarded the skill levels, his configuration was quite good. He had ninjutsu for all seven nature transformations and both taijutsu and fuinjutsu. However, the skills with high proficiency were mostly fire-style jutsu and taijutsu.
Mu Yue understood the reason behind this. The system rewards were not entirely random. The disciple refunds were highly likely to provide bonuses related to the disciples, with a small chance of being random, while the mission rewards always included disciple-related bonuses.
Before recruiting Kakashi, Genma and Obito had a tendency for fire-style jutsu, and Might Guy focused on taijutsu. This resulted in Mu Yue receiving more rewards in these areas, and it was only after recruiting Kakashi that he obtained the skilled-level Lightning and Earth Attribute Chakra Nature Alteration.
Teaching jutsu in class was an efficient way to level up. Even a small class could yield two basic jutsu per day, and a larger class would mean an additional basic jutsu.
By acquiring the same basic jutsu three times, one could reach the skilled level, and with eighteen more, they could achieve the proficient level.
However, the probability of encountering the same jutsu twenty-one times was too low, and Mu Yue only aimed to obtain more skilled-level skills.
Through his battle with the jinchuriki, he had come to realize the importance of skills. If the old man had possessed any other powerful abilities besides Lava Release, Mu Yue would have had to think harder about how to reasonably stop him.
After leaving the Hokage Building, Mu Yue headed straight to the Southern Forest to instruct his disciples.
He had promised Minato that he would help deliver a message and photos to Kushina, but developing the photographs took time, and he had no way of immediately contacting her.
Kushina didn't have a fixed refresh point near the Hokage Building, so the only reliable way for Mu Yue to reach her was through the food delivery ninjas.
Therefore, Mu Yue decided to wait until the photos were ready before arranging a meeting time with Kushina. He would then deliver Minato's message and give her the photos as well.
When Mu Yue arrived at the Southern Forest, everything appeared as usual, with all the disciples diligently training.
"Teacher Mu Yue, what was the final rating of the mission? It wasn't a C-rank, was it?" Obito paused his fire-style training and asked curiously.
"Of course not," Mu Yue replied with a mysterious smile. "Just the fact that we engaged in combat with ninjas should disqualify it from being a C-rank. Take a guess at a higher rank."
"Could it be an S-rank?" Excitement flashed across Obito's face as he asked.
Most people might have tentatively guessed an A-rank, but Obito never lacked the courage to make bold assumptions.
"You guessed it," Mu Yue nodded with a smile and tossed a candy to Obito. "Here's a reward for your correct guess."
This was one of the reasons why he was so popular among his students. Mu Yue always enjoyed rewarding them and would carry some snacks with him.
"Hehe," Obito chuckled, tearing open the wrapper and popping the candy into his mouth.
"Now that ninja uncle at the mission hall definitely won't dare to underestimate us anymore. S-rank missions should be pretty amazing, huh?" Obito said with a mischievous smile.
Even Kakashi was surprised to hear that. It was uncommon for missions that encountered unexpected developments to be upgraded to S-rank, as S-rank missions were the highest-level missions in Konoha. Kakashi had been a chunin for several years and had never undertaken an S-rank mission.
He had never come across an S-rank mission when working with a regular team, but surprisingly, when he had teamed up with genin, they had managed to achieve two A-ranks and one S-rank. Kakashi couldn't help but marvel at how mysterious the world was.
"The upgrade to an S-rank mission has less to do with us and more to do with Teacher Mu Yue's outstanding contribution," Kakashi analyzed rationally.
He felt that their performance on the battlefield had been decent, but he believed that Mu Yue's contribution had been the deciding factor.
"But Teacher Mu Yue is part of our team, and his strength contributes to our team's overall strength," Obito argued, feeling that Kakashi was splitting hairs unnecessarily.
In his opinion, their team, the Mu Yue class, had simply wreaked havoc on the battlefield.
Kakashi found it hard to refute Obito's statement. Indeed, their team's strength included Mu Yue, but the problem was that without Mu Yue, their team's strength would plummet to the point of disbandment.
"You're right, I did play a significant role, but all of you performed well too," Mu Yue said with a gentle smile. "Jiraiya-sama also values and recognizes your potential. Keep up the hard work, and one day, you'll be able to complete S-rank missions on your own."
In reality, it was indeed Mu Yue's immense contribution that had caused the mission to be upgraded to an S-rank, but there was no harm in giving his disciples some extra encouragement.
"You don't mean there's an exam to become Hokage, do you?" Obito asked, taken aback.
"Becoming Hokage doesn't require an exam, but people generally don't want someone who's all muscle and no brain to lead them," Kakashi replied.
"Damn you, Kakashi! You're the one who's all muscle and no brain!" Obito retorted, realizing Kakashi was mocking his lack of theoretical understanding.
"At least I got full marks in the Ninja Academy exams. What about you?" Kakashi countered, a hint of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
Obito: [...]
He shouldn't have let Kakashi tag along when he went to check his results.
"By the way, I also got full marks on the written exam for the Chunin selection test. I really feel sorry for your future teammates. It would be hilarious if you got eliminated in the first round because of the theory section," Kakashi continued, piling on the sarcasm.
Obito decided to strike back after enduring Kakashi's taunts multiple times, and now he had the perfect opportunity to deal some damage.
"I feel more sorry for your future teammates. A Chunin losing to a Genin? That's you," Obito shot back.
They both knew their team wouldn't stay together forever. Once Obito and his peers graduated, this team, formed during their internship, would disband.
"Alright, that's enough. Channel your energy into training instead," Mu Yue interjected, putting a stop to their bickering. He wanted them to direct their passion toward their practice.
Although Kakashi had just started learning the breathing technique, he didn't have any urgent training goals. For him, the Lightning Breath was the highest priority, so starting the intermediate level training early wasn't an issue.
After all, the intermediate level was about increasing the upper limit of total concentration and maintaining a highly focused breathing state for extended periods.
Might Guy, on the other hand, was different. Mastering the third gate was more crucial for him, and he would focus on the intermediate level training afterward since the first three gates of the Eight Inner Gates were relatively easier to train.
As they began their full concentration breathing exercises, both guys initially had the energy to compete. But soon enough, they were too exhausted to do anything but focus on the training.
When the session ended, they lay on the ground, too tired to continue their verbal sparring.
But Obito, remembering something he hadn't said yet, mustered his willpower, stood up, and slowly walked over to sit next to Rin Nohara.
"Rin, you'll never guess how many enemies we encountered on our mission," Obito said, taking a deep breath to steady himself.
No matter how tired he was, he had to tell her about his heroic deeds.
Kakashi, noticing Obito's movements, saw him chatting with Rin and quietly sat down by a tree nearby to make sure Obito didn't badmouth him.
"Did you encounter twenty enemies?" Rin asked, her chin resting on her hand, a smile playing on her lips.
"Twenty? That's too few," Obito said, exaggerating his expression. "There were at least six hundred! Rock Village ninjas were everywhere, like an endless swarm. Just when you defeated one, three more would attack!"
"With so many enemies, I hope you didn't get hurt," Rin said, her eyes wide with concern. With only about three hundred students per grade in the Ninja Academy, she found it hard to believe that fighting so many fully-fledged ninjas could be anything but extremely dangerous.
"Just some minor injuries. Mu Yue-sensei healed us right after the battle. We're fine," Obito assured her, feeling warm inside at her worry.
"Even though there were many enemies, we also had a lot of comrades. I saved several of them, including a Jonin. They all praised me for my strength and said they were astonished by my talent," Obito continued, a proud smile spreading across his face.
"That's wonderful," Rin said, her eyes shining with happiness.
"I still remember how a few years ago, you couldn't even take care of yourself and forgot to bring your enrollment documents. Now, you've become a dependable boy who can save his comrades in critical moments," she added, her smile softening.
During their four years at the Ninja Academy, she had always helped Obito like an older sister. Seeing his growth filled her with surprise and joy.
"You seem as reliable as Kakashi now."
Rin smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners like two curved little boats, carrying the joy of a bountiful harvest.
Obito felt her smile wash away his training fatigue like warm spring sunshine, gentle and bright.
"It would be better without those three extra words," Obito thought to himself.
Why did she have to say he was as reliable as Kakashi, as if he were a notch below him? Being compared to Mu Yue-sensei wouldn't have bothered him.
"Hehe, I really owe you one for helping me back then. I thought I'd missed the chance to enroll," Obito scratched his head and smiled gratefully.
"It's only natural for future classmates to help each other," Rin replied softly.
"Oh, I took a lot of photos during the mission, and I saw some flowers that I haven't seen in Konoha. They're quite beautiful. I wonder if they're unique to the Grass Country," Obito said, remembering the photos.
"I'll give you some when the photos are ready."
"Okay, then I'll thank you in advance," Rin replied, beaming.
Hearing no mention of himself, Kakashi nodded inwardly and decided they had rested enough. He stood up to leave.
"It seems Kakashi understands you well. He must have carefully selected that gift. You two should get along well," Rin said, her palms pressed together.
Kakashi, passing by, turned his head slightly and explained, "Don't read too much into it. The camera at the store just happened to be on sale."
"Maybe I made a mistake. I should have bought dozens of practice papers from Mu Yue-sensei and given them to him. He might need those more," Kakashi added.
Obito was stunned by Kakashi's words. He had never heard such a malicious idea. Dozens of practice papers as a gift? That would be signing his own death warrant.
"Damn you, Kakashi," Obito thought, wondering what he would do if Kakashi actually gave him such a present.
Without lingering further, Kakashi left to go home for dinner.
...
Learning from Obito that it would take two more days to get the photos, Mu Yue finished making dinner and communicated with Kushina through a food delivery ninja.
After confirming the itinerary, Mu Yue returned to the village on the fourth day with Minato's photos and some pastries he had made, waiting for Kushina at the agreed-upon location.
4k, asking for monthly votes. There should be another 6k coming up.
