Chapter 247: Lanchi's Positive Work Ethic
Chapter 247: Lanchi's Positive Work Ethic
The ship finally docked, its massive iron anchor dropping into the sea with a thunderous roar, sending up white splashes as the mooring ropes were securely tied to the large iron rings on the pier. Even before Viscount Francis had disembarked, servants from the manor were already waiting with a carriage.
Following Viscount Francis, Lanchi descended the gangplank and boarded the carriage bound directly for the manor. The clopping of hooves on the cobblestones echoed melodiously, mingling with the distant sound of waves.
Lanchi gazed quietly out the window. In the distance, the silhouette of the lighthouse stood against the fiery sunset, and the buildings seemed to be crafted from emotion and history itself. Every stone and every wall bore the marks of their makers, creating a town that was vastly different from Ikelite.
It was said that the imperial style of Protoss was truly unique, with highly advanced magical engineering and demonic legacies that infused the city with a fantastical blend of orderly chaos and diversity.
If possible, Lanchi wanted to finish his thesis early so that he could fully enjoy the vacation that came with it, exploring the imperial city with Huberian. After all, Dean Lorren had mentioned that they wouldn't be expelled even if they returned two months late.
It was time for him to establish himself firmly in the Protoss Empire.
"Viscount, may I start teaching Miss tomorrow?" Lanchi asked, turning to the viscount who sat across from him.
"Of course, but don't you need to rest first?" Viscount Francis eyed the bandages on Lanchi's body.
"It's not a problem. These injuries won't affect my brain." Lanchi replied with a smile.
Once in pursuit of his goals, he didn't want to waste a single day. The Resurrection Church had already obtained legal permission, but the attitude of the residents of Lilom City made it clear that the identity of a resurrectionist was still frowned upon by most people in the Protoss Empire.
If he wanted to use the "Proof of Resurrection - Destruction" to obtain official identification from the empire through the church, his legal identity in the Northern Continent would be irrevocably tied to the church.
And there were flaws in his Proof of Resurrection; at least the bishop had the authority to access its true information. So, he couldn't rely on this "Proof of Resurrection - Destruction" to actually meet the Bishop of Annihilation. Its purpose was merely to help Lanchi quickly connect with the Resurrection Church in the Northern Continent.
Given the current situation, he preferred to obtain the identity of an ordinary resident from a remote province, which would make it easier for him to establish a legitimate career in the Protoss Empire. He could then transfer to the Annihilation Branch and obtain his own "Proof of Resurrection - Annihilation," ensuring that his resident identity and religious identity remained separate.
The promise Viscount Francis had made was actually very broad. As long as Lanchi could fulfill the role of a tutor for the young viscountess, he had even offered to let Lanchi name his conditions.
The viscount was well aware of what Lanchi needed most at the moment. Nonetheless, he had made that promise, implicitly agreeing to assist Lanchi in acquiring a new identity.
"Mr. Roche, you can take a couple of days to rest... and then start working. Teaching her is no easy task. I'll have the manor staff send you a set of theoretical magic textbooks from the Protoss Empire." Viscount Francis replied helplessly.
He was concerned about the young man enduring both physical and mental torment.
"I can finish reading the book I need for tomorrow's lesson tonight. It would make me feel guilty to freeload at the manor," Lanchi said, his confident smile unwavering.
"Actually, you don't have to look at them."
In Lanchi's opinion, the set of books written by Professor Polaau should be no less than any other country's or school's curriculum, and he himself had already committed them to memory and understood them thoroughly.
All he needed to do was to familiarize himself with the syllabus of the Protoss Royal Magic Academy, after all, the Viscount's hope was that Zestil, with her severe academic bias, would be able to smoothly pass the school's future courses, without causing any trouble in that highly ranked and frequently examined school, and that she would adapt to the "teaching" mode of communication.
"Then... I'll leave it to you."
Viscount Francis sighed and nodded in agreement.
At least from the other party's attitude, he could see sincerity and confidence in his abilities.
"However, if you're going to start teaching tomorrow morning, there are some things I need to tell you now."
Viscount Francis' brows soon furrowed with worry.
He had originally planned to have Lanchi stay at the manor for a couple of days before slowly telling him, but now he could only instruct him on the way.
"My daughter, Zestil, is not a bad person at heart. She has just endured a lot of prejudice since she was young because of her demonic features... Even though people treat her with respect due to her status, there are some things hidden in their eyes that a child cannot be deceived about..."
Viscount Francis' words were filled with guilt.
"I should never have taken her to the provincial capital or the imperial capital. There, the great nobles would not even consider her human, and her sensitive heart must have endured unimaginable wounds from the way they treated her."
He understood that he could not empathize with his daughter, and he also knew what she had gone through during the entrance exam for the Protoss Royal Magic Academy.
Ever since then, after returning to Lilom City with her, she had locked herself in her room and rarely went out.
Lanchi listened attentively to Viscount Francis' story, occasionally patting the viscount's shoulder and offering advice and words of comfort like a psychologist. Unknowingly, the sky outside the carriage window had darkened, and they had passed an ancient arch bridge, with historic buildings and street lamps by its side. They were soon approaching the manor.
"Rest assured, I will sincerely try to communicate with her on an emotional level. The culture of my country is different from yours, and perhaps a few years ago, there may have been some prejudice against the demon tribe, but now, at least in my school, no one discriminates against them. Even pure-blooded demons can live out their days in the royal capital, eating and sleeping without a care in the world, free from any worries or discrimination."
Lanchi assured Viscount Francis.
Viscount Francis knew that the young man before him was gentle and tended to paint overly idealistic and impractical romantic pictures to joke with him.
A hundred years ago, the Demon Tribe War had reached the Southern Continent. Even though the Southern Continent nations may not have hated the Demon Tribe as deeply as the Protoss Empire, they certainly did not treat them as well.
The more Viscount Francis chatted with Lanchi, the more he felt like he was being forced to face the reality of the situation.
This young man was still too naive and saw things too simply.
His daughter hated discrimination, feared pity, and resisted charity. The constant hurt she endured had led her to develop a self-defensive attitude that eventually turned into a complete denial of herself and all others.
Viscount Francis could deeply empathize with her, understanding the process of how her long-incurable heart disease eventually turned into her current state.
And it was precisely because of this understanding that Viscount Francis keenly realized that this was an almost unsolvable dilemma.
Perhaps it was a bit of desperation that made him turn to this youth whom he had just met.
However, no matter what, Viscount Francis could only hold onto this slim hope and try his best, even if it seemed futile.
