Chapter 241: Drained Life Force
Chapter 241: Drained Life Force
After agreeing to Lockhart's request, Ivan did not leave immediately. Instead, he asked Lockhart to teach him the Obliviate spell.
This semester's experiences had deeply impressed upon Ivan the importance of this spell.
If he had known the Obliviate spell back then, the incident of sneaking into the Gryffindor girls' dormitory would not have been discovered by Hermione.
It would also have allowed him to handle today's situation more calmly. For example, he could have erased the memories of those two Ravenclaw boys and cleaned up the writing on the wall before anyone else arrived.
"You want to learn the Obliviate spell? Why? Do you plan to erase someone's memory?" Lockhart asked curiously.
"Just in case." Ivan did not elaborate, giving him a look. "Why are you asking so many questions? I won't use it on you."
"I didn't say that, but this spell isn't easy to learn", Lockhart chuckled awkwardly and began explaining the incantation, gestures, and usage of the Obliviate spell to Ivan.
While Lockhart might be a mediocrity in other areas of magic, he was undoubtedly a master of the Obliviate spell. Probably no other Wizard in the Wizarding World could use it better than he could.
After all, for decades, Lockhart had devoted all his intelligence and talent to this one spell.
This was a rare opportunity to show off his genuine expertise, and Lockhart was deeply engaged in the explanation, even sharing some of the small tricks he had summarized over the years.
Of course, this was also partly because the young Wizard in front of him held something over him.
Under the guidance of this master of the Obliviate spell, Ivan's understanding of the spell improved rapidly.
With the expenditure of a certain amount of academic points, Ivan could hear the sound of his proficiency increasing in his mind from time to time.
Before long, the Obliviate spell appeared in the magic section of the System.
"Obliviate!" Ivan waved his Wand, and a beam of milky white light struck the wall.
Since there was no target, Ivan did not know how effective it was.
"You learned it? So quickly!" Lockhart was amazed. As a master of the Obliviate spell, he could clearly see that Ivan had already grasped the basics of the spell.
The Obliviate spell was a particularly difficult memory spell to learn. It had taken Lockhart three days to master it, which he had always considered very fast, and he had been quite proud of it.
"More or less", Ivan nodded casually.
"Your talent is truly astonishing", Lockhart said, both admiring and a bit envious.
"There's no need to envy me. In terms of understanding the Obliviate spell, no one in the Wizarding World is stronger than you", Ivan shook his head and said.
"Of course, otherwise I wouldn't be so famous", Lockhart said proudly.
This was his only point of pride. Not everyone could use the Obliviate spell to erase the memories of so many powerful Wizards without leaving any trace.
Ivan didn't bother to correct Lockhart's mindset. Everyone has their own way of living.
Having learned the Obliviate spell, Ivan opened the door and was about to leave.
Suddenly, he remembered something and turned back to ask.
"By the way, Professor Lockhart, what do you think about today's attack?"
Lockhart was taken aback for a moment, then replied regretfully, "She was an enthusiastic Ravenclaw. I even signed her autograph earlier. Fortunately, she's fine."
Walking out of Lockhart's office, Ivan followed the crowd back to the Gryffindor common room.
Almost everyone on the way was speculating about who had attacked the Ravenclaw girl, and rumors were flying.
This situation continued until the next afternoon, when Hermione asked Professor Binns about the Chamber of Secrets. The young Wizards from Muggle families immediately felt threatened.
They believed that the one who opened the Chamber of Secrets must, as the rumors suggested, think that Muggle-born Wizards were unworthy of learning magic, and that was why they wanted to kill the Ravenclaw girl.
The message written on the wall was a warning to everyone, stating that those who tried to stop the cleansing of the school would also be killed.
The unluckiest of all was Harry. Due to his previous exposure of his ability to speak Parseltongue, he was listed as the primary suspect for the attack.
According to legend, the Chamber of Secrets was built by Salazar Slytherin, one of the founders of Hogwarts, and his most famous trait was his ability to speak Parseltongue!
"Damn it, how can they suspect you? You were with us all day yesterday!" After class, in the corridor outside the classroom, Ron said indignantly.
Harry was also very frustrated. He had done nothing, yet he was somehow considered the attacker.
"Do you think it might be related to Voldemort's thing?" Harry suddenly thought of the Diary that had been stolen from Ivan, and he lowered his voice to ask.
"Maybe", Ivan said casually, then turned to Hermione and asked, "Hermione, has the injured Ravenclaw girl woken up yet?"
To figure out who took the Horcrux, the most direct approach would be to ask the girl who was injured yesterday. She might know some clues.
"Not yet. According to Madam Pomfrey, she is not only injured but also seems to have been hit by a very powerful dark magic, causing severe Life Force Depletion", Hermione said worriedly.
"Life Force Depletion", Ivan frowned, realizing the situation was more serious than he had imagined.
It seemed that Tom Riddle not only planned to frame him but was also secretly trying to restore his strength.
This discovery gave Ivan some clues.
Having interacted with Tom for so long, Ivan had a deep understanding of the power the Horcrux possessed.
Unless the girl had complete trust in the Horcrux and was willing to open a part of her soul to it, Tom would not have been able to drain so much of a young Wizard's life force in such a short time.
This meant that the Ravenclaw girl had likely held the Horcrux for a long time, building this level of trust.
Now that the poor girl had lost her usefulness, Tom had heartlessly discarded her, using her as a pawn to create trouble for him.
"Brilliant, Tom, you're really getting better at your schemes", Ivan said, feeling a headache. He had been using his informational advantage to tease Tom every day, but now he had almost been outmaneuvered by Tom.
Compared to the Ginny in the original timeline, Ivan understood that Tom had already regained some power, but it wasn't enough for a full resurrection, as the Ravenclaw girl was still alive.
But if Tom drained a few more people's life forces, who knew what might happen!
