Chapter 240: This is What You Call Repair?
Chapter 240: This is What You Call Repair?
"So, you were the ones who stopped her bleeding?" Madam Pomfrey, who was half-kneeling on the ground, turned to the two boys as she examined the Ravenclaw girl's left hand. She spoke with evident approval.
"You did a great job! You saved her life!"
"No, Professor, we didn't do anything." The two boys shook their heads in fear, indicating that the girl was already in this state when they arrived.
"Then who could it have been?" Madam Pomfrey stood up, looking puzzled.
"It couldn't have been the person who attacked her, right?" Lockhart tried to make a joke, thinking he was being humorous.
"There's a possibility!" Professor Mcgonagall interjected.
The other professors nodded in agreement. They believed the attacker was likely a student who acted on impulse and then, unable to bear the guilt, tried to save the girl.
Dumbledore was silent for a moment before he turned to the two Ravenclaw boys and asked, "Did you notice anything unusual when you arrived? For example, did you hear any sounds or see anyone else nearby?"
The two Ravenclaw boys recalled the noise they had heard earlier and reported it truthfully to Dumbledore.
"Is that so? It seems someone was in a hurry to cover their tracks. Perhaps we should use the Reparo spell to restore the wall", Professor Mcgonagall suggested, noticing the spell damage on the wall. She raised her Wand to cast the spell.
Ivan, who was watching from the side, felt his heart leap to his throat. He couldn't imagine what everyone would think if the words on the wall were restored and his name appeared. How would he explain it?
Should he deny it outright, insisting that he had never been there and that the words and damage on the wall were planted to frame him?
Or should he admit that he arrived at the scene and immediately saved the girl, only to find someone setting him up, so he destroyed the wall and hid?
Both explanations seemed weak and unconvincing.
Ivan could almost see the sixteen-year-old Slytherin boy, Tom Riddle, smirking at him.
He finally realized why Tom Riddle had placed the girl on the eighth floor. The corridor led directly to the Room of Requirement, which he visited almost every day at this time. By placing the girl there, Riddle was deliberately making sure Ivan would find her.
If another student, who couldn't perform healing magic, had encountered this situation, they would have been forced to watch the Ravenclaw girl die and would have tried to erase the words on the wall.
As the mastermind, Tom Riddle would only need to have one of his controlled students bring people to the scene at the right moment to complete a perfect frame-up.
Ivan knew that while he had avoided the worst-case scenario, he was still trapped in Tom Riddle's scheme. Unless he could quickly clean up all traces and move the Ravenclaw girl who was lying in a pool of blood, he wouldn't be able to clear his name.
Ivan kept thinking about how he could explain the situation when Lockhart's voice cut through his thoughts.
"Let me handle it. No one here is better at this kind of repair work than I am!" Lockhart preempted Professor Mcgonagall and waved his Wand.
A crimson beam of magic hit the wall, followed by a loud explosion. A large hole appeared in the corridor wall, and dust rained down from the ceiling.
"This is what you call a repair? Now there's nothing left there", Snape interjected with a sarcastic tone.
Everyone stared dumbfounded at the scene, the professors looking at Lockhart with peculiar expressions. Lockhart himself looked utterly at a loss.
Dumbledore, however, stepped forward at this moment. He drew his old Wand from his sleeve and, with a wave, the fragments of lime and ash on the ground reattached themselves to the wall.
However, many of the stones were already stained with blood, and Ivan had used the Aqua Eructo spell to clean the area initially, so the inscriptions were now completely illegible.
Ivan finally let out a sigh of relief. He had never been so grateful.
Dumbledore frowned at the sight and cast a disapproving glance at Lockhart before turning to the two Ravenclaw boys.
"Mr. Aber and Mr. Adrian, please come with me!"
Dumbledore led the two away, while the other professors maintained order, urging the little Wizards gathered around to quickly return to their dormitories. Madam Pomfrey took the unconscious Ravenclaw girl to the hospital wing.
Ivan managed to extricate himself, but he felt no joy.
If Tom Riddle could carry out such an attack once, there was a high chance he would do it again!
Ivan did not believe he would be so lucky every time.
The only solution was to find the person holding the Diary before the next attack.
"Hals, how about you stop by my office later?" Ivan was still thinking when Lockhart suddenly caught up from behind, patting his shoulder.
"Sure!" Ivan looked at him for a moment before nodding.
Stepping back into Lockhart's office, Ivan glanced around. The table was cluttered with books, all of them on magic.
The last time he visited, Ivan had noticed these books on Lockhart's table and thought he was just fickle. He didn't expect that Lockhart would still be reading them even now.
"Can you cast spells normally now?" Ivan asked curiously, remembering that Lockhart's spells used to go out of control. Reading these books didn't seem to help much, did it?
"Not really, but if I focus on practicing just one spell for a while, maybe I can use it normally like my Obliviate spell", Lockhart shook his head and said with a sigh.
Then, with a glimmer of hope, he added, "Hals, do you really have no quick way to enhance one's power?"
"I already told you, I don't!" Ivan shook his head.
"What you're doing is already good. Try to deepen your knowledge of magic and use the time you spend writing to your fans to practice magic. In a few years, you should be able to regain the spellcasting abilities of a normal Wizard", Ivan added.
"Spending several years just to become a regular Wizard? That's not what I want!" Lockhart was quite disappointed.
However, he quickly composed himself and brought up the main topic, which was the agreed-upon identity swap at tomorrow's Dueling Club.
Ivan had almost forgotten about this until Lockhart reminded him.
However, Ivan hesitated for a moment but did not refuse. This meant he could use the professor's identity to interact with most of the students and investigate any suspicious behavior.
