Chapter 240: Lanchi is the Principal of the Inferno Corridor Academy
Chapter 240: Lanchi is the Principal of the Inferno Corridor Academy
The cozy chamber was adorned with warm-toned furniture and drapes, creating a comfortable ambiance. Seated on the bed beneath the chandelier, the young man rose and bowed deeply to Viscount Francis.
"Thank you for saving my life, Viscount," he said, his voice tinged with fatigue from adjusting to the translation magic.
With a smile, Viscount Francis nodded for the young man to sit and took a seat himself, never one to put on aristocratic airs.
"You're welcome, young man. I imagine this place is unfamiliar to you. Would you mind telling me about your ordeal, where you're from, and where you're headed?" Viscount Francis inquired.
"I am a scholar from the Kingdom of Hutton in the Southern Continent. I had intended to travel to the Northern Continent to complete an academic project, but we encountered a magical storm, and our ship wrecked... I must have been rescued by you after I lost consciousness," the young man with brown hair explained, a hint of hesitation in his voice.
As Viscount Francis listened, a ripple of intrigue stirred within him.
The Kingdom of Hutton was a renowned power in the Southern Continent, even to the extent that Viscount Francis had heard of it.
Additionally, there were notable figures associated with the kingdom, such as the High Priest of the Church of the Goddess of Fate, who hailed from Hutton.
Viscount Francis surmised that the young man's plight was likely connected, in one way or another, to the recent disturbances in magical storms at sea.
Indeed, there had been a significant increase in shipwrecks lately, particularly among vessels from the Southern Continent.
Although the young man's account may have omitted certain key details, Viscount Francis could sense his sincerity.
"I apologize, but my identification documents and luggage were lost in the shipwreck," the young man added.
Viscount Francis waved his hand, indicating that he wouldn't press the issue or subject the young man to undue scrutiny.
During breakfast, the viscount's secretary had already verified the young man's fluency in the Southern Continent's language. Even without translation magic, he could easily comprehend books from the Southern Continent and exhibited a profound understanding of their culture and society through conversation.
There was no doubt he was from the Southern Continent, and some things couldn't be acquired through mere study or imitation.
More importantly, the gentle aura he exuded made it difficult to suspect him of any ill intentions.
He also didn't possess any threatening powers.
The young man's attire was not extravagant, but his eloquence and demeanor instantly revealed his erudite background and noble upbringing. It was evident that he had become separated from his guardians during the maritime disaster.
"I won't pry into your identity any further, as doing so would only lead to unfounded suspicions. However, there is one thing I'd like to confirm with you," Viscount Francis said. "Are you affiliated with the Church of the Goddess of Fate?"
"No, I don't subscribe to any religious faith," Lanchi replied, perplexed.
Viscount Francis heaved a sigh of relief. "May I ask why you're asking me this?" Lanchi inquired, his expression unchanged and filled with confusion.
"If you were a priest, I would have had to turn you over to the Protoss Empire on charges of colluding with a heretical sect or espionage. Rest assured, I wouldn't have harmed you. I would have simply set you ashore outside the city and provided you with some food," Viscount Francis explained.
"The Church of the Goddess of Fate is currently considered a heretical sect in the Protoss Empire and is being eradicated." He was aware that this would sound absurd to someone from the Southern Continent.
As Viscount Francis briefly outlined the current political climate in the Protoss Empire, Lanchi's expression grew increasingly puzzled.
This version of events was peculiar; it was as if the Church of Resurrection was on the verge of going public!
However, Lanchi quickly adapted to this new version. After all, it was more practical to adapt to the prevailing narrative than to wait for it to change.
After a brief conversation, Lanchi gained a general understanding of his current location and shared his predicament with Viscount Francis.
"Mr. Francis, I'd like to find my companions. Can you help me?" Lanchi asked earnestly.
"Mr. Roche, I am truly sorry to hear about your situation, but my ability to assist you at this time is limited," Viscount Francis replied with a sigh.
It was evident to him that the missing companion held great significance for the young man.
Furthermore, the young man's calmness, composure, and insightfulness, especially after having just escaped the clutches of death, impressed upon Viscount Francis the young man's exceptional character once more.
"However, without legal status in the Empire, while it's fine in this small city, it would be difficult to travel further north into the Protoss Empire."
Viscount Francis did not dare to risk using his territorial rights to procure a false identity for the young man during this period.
"If you're willing, I can settle you in Lilom City and give you a job."
This was the extent of Viscount Francis' ability to help.
If Roche earned enough money, they could take him with them the next time they went to the eastern port city, where he could buy a ticket back to the Southern Continent. At the very least, they could send him home.
And with this act of kindness, perhaps if he ever needed to go to the Southern Continent in the future, he would have one more acquaintance there.
"What kind of job is it?" Lanchi asked.
Having been rescued, he felt it would only be right to contribute and not freeload, and earning some Protoss Empire currency would also make his travels within the Empire much easier.
However, his appearance clearly wasn't suited for manual labor, and for some key clerical positions, Viscount Francis, despite his kindness, wouldn't dare entrust them to this stranger he had just met.
"You mentioned that you're a scholar and proficient in magic genealogy and magic engineering, right?" Viscount Francis asked slowly.
"My daughter is a real headache. She refuses to go to school and has driven away many tutors, even those I've specially invited from other cities... She has actually passed the entrance exam for the Protoss Royal Magic Academy, but with her attitude, I worry that she won't be able to continue her studies there smoothly."
His daughter was extremely talented, even unreasonably so. As long as she didn't waste her gift, she would undoubtedly become a powerful individual, and no one would dare look down on her again. She would also have more than enough ability to protect herself.
Originally, Viscount Francis had been at his wit's end, but upon seeing this unique young man from the Southern Continent, he thought he might as well give it a try.
"Teaching? No problem," Lanchi said, his eyes lighting up at the prospect.
This topic had truly piqued his interest, and he readily agreed.
"I advise you not to get your hopes up. She's a very difficult student," Viscount Francis said, shaking his head with a smile.
"In that case, if she approves of me, will the compensation be very generous?" Lanchi asked, his enthusiasm growing.
As the principal of the Inferno Corridor Academy, there wasn't a student he couldn't teach.
"Hmph, then name your price," Viscount Francis said, having never met someone so confident.
One could even say that Lanchi was a bit arrogant and self-important.
Perhaps he really was a talented young scholar in the Southern Continent, but education was far from simple.
Especially when dealing with extremely challenging problem children.
It was worth a shot, and if it didn't work out, he could always find something else for him to do.
But if he truly became an approved tutor, then using his authority to procure a new identity for him and even sending him to the Imperial Capital to accompany her at the Protoss Royal Magic Academy wouldn't be a problem.
After all, when it came to finding people, the Imperial Capital was the place with the most extensive flow of information.
"Very well, then rest assured that I will get you to meet her," Lanchi said confidently.
Viscount Francis smiled as he stood up and slowly walked to the cabin door. He turned and looked at the young man once more.
"Get some rest for now. You're still a patient, and it looks like there might be a storm tonight, so the ship might rock and make it hard for you to sleep."
With that, Viscount Francis opened the cabin door and left.
After closing the door behind Lanchi, Viscount Francis let out a relieved smile.
Regardless, this young man was a likable person, and even after hearing about his prospective student's demonic features, he hadn't hesitated at all.
The Southern Continent truly bred honest and simple people.
"My lord, aren't you afraid that he might harm Miss?" the secretary asked as he accompanied Viscount Francis along the corridor.
"It's fine. She can easily subdue that young man," Viscount Francis waved his hand dismissively.
The young man might not truly be a first-tier magician, but his magical power was indeed only at the first-tier level, and he clearly hadn't trained in close-quarters combat techniques.
If his magical power was a disguise, and he could disguise it so smoothly and naturally, then he would at least be a seventh-tier or higher powerhouse. If he wanted to cause them harm, it would only take a thought.
