Chapter 24: The Night
Chapter 24: The Night
"Slap!"
Scarface, caught off guard, froze momentarily as a small, pointed hammer pierced his forehead between his eyebrows. His eyes widened, and his face expressed sheer disbelief.
The next second, his heavy body started to fall forward.
However, a pair of slender yet sturdy hands suddenly appeared, catching Scarface's twitching body and gently lowering it to the side of the porch without making a sound.
Although Rain had just demonstrated remarkable steadiness in his previous action, his heart was now pounding fiercely.
Before launching the attack, Rain had allocated his remaining attribute points to agility.
For a surprise attack, Rain believed that speed was the key to success.
With sufficient speed, even a flying bird could pierce bulletproof glass.
Moreover, Rain held a woodworking hammer in his hand.
Removing the short sword from Scarface's waist and a delicate hand crossbow, Rain aimed through the window with the crossbow, but there was no movement inside.
Inside, a bearded man was in the process of taking off his pants.
The naked girl in front of him had already captured more than ninety percent of his attention, and he hadn't noticed the slender shadow that had crept up behind him.
"Swoosh!"
A black crossbow bolt flew out, striking the tall body of the bearded man, who immediately let out a painful cry.
The bearded man quickly turned his head to look behind him, but before he could make out who had attacked him, a gust of wind rushed towards him.
"Pfft!"
A sharp short sword was thrust into his throat!
The bearded man didn't even have time to pull up his pants, and he clutched his neck wound with both hands, his eyes wide with shock, as he stared at the slender Rain.
His body seemed reluctant to give up, and he staggered back a few steps, slamming into a wooden table before finally collapsing to the ground, twitching occasionally.
He looked like a snake with its spine removed.
Rain had just executed a powerful Step Thrust with all his might!
"Huff... Huff..."
Rain panted heavily, drenched in sweat, and stood motionless, his chest heaving rapidly. If not for this, he might have been mistaken for a statue.
That thrust seemed to have exhausted all of Rain's strength.
This was the first time Rain had killed someone in his two lifetimes.
At this moment, Rain felt a sense of fatigue throughout his body, and his eyes held a hint of confusion.
"Did I just kill someone?"
"I killed someone!"
"No, I didn't kill anyone!"
Rain's clenched fists gradually loosened, and his eyes began to shine as if he had realized something.
"I came to this extraordinary world, and even if I can't do much, I must at least survive and live well!"
"I must protect myself, protect my family, and if I have the ability, I'll protect those I want to protect!"
At that moment, Anna was trembling, using her torn linen outer garment to cover her fair skin, like a frightened fawn, she timidly gazed at Rain.
When her tearful eyes, finally recognized her savior as the familiar Rain, she couldn't help but rush forward and embrace him.
Facing the girl's passionate embrace, Rain had no thoughts whatsoever.
He gently patted Anna's back and softly said, "Don't be afraid, you're safe now."
"Anna, put your clothes on first, and I'll go check again just in case."
Instantly, Anna let out a soft cry, realizing that she was almost completely naked. Blushing, she quickly began to dress.
To avoid Rain's gaze, she turned her body slightly, inadvertently revealing a beautiful curve to him.
Suddenly, Rain froze, realizing what he had just witnessed.
He muttered to himself, "This is bad."
The other party must have discovered the body lying at the door.
The romantic atmosphere in the air instantly dissipated.
"Hurry up and get dressed!" Rain urged, pulling out the sharp short sword from the bearded man's throat, which was dripping with blood.
Rayn immediately turned around, shielding Anna behind him, and pointed his sword at the direction of the door. Anna also began to hurriedly put on her clothes, seeing Rayn's tense expression, she couldn't help but sense the impending danger.
It seemed like he had to waste Skill Points, and just as Rayn was about to allocate them to Mammoth Breath Technique, a figure that Rayn was all too familiar with and disliked appeared at the doorway, followed closely by several fully-armed elite night watchmen.
"It's him!" Rayn couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief, and his entire body relaxed.
Hamilton, upon witnessing this scene, was several times more astonished than Rayn! He had finally obtained reliable information that the suspect in the child abduction case might be active in this area tonight. But upon entering, he never expected to see such a scene!
How could a child possibly do this?
Directly killing two wanted fugitives?
Although their strength wasn't considered exceptional, it was still beyond the capabilities of an ordinary youth to handle two such fugitives!
But the bloody reality told Hamilton, the town sheriff, that the skinny youth holding a bloodied sword before him was the very 'instigator' of all this!
If Rayn's display of composure and talent when dealing with Drunkard Jack had left a deep impression on Hamilton, this time, Rayn's actions truly shocked him.
Clearly, it was unlikely that Rayn had directly charged in and engaged the two fugitives in a head-on battle, especially with a weak girl who might have been taken hostage by the fugitives.
Even if he had come to rescue the girl, it would have been a difficult situation for Hamilton, as he would have had to consider the girl's safety.
Yet, Rayn had managed to save the girl and counter-kill the two fugitives, demonstrating both courage and strategy!
From this moment on, Hamilton viewed Rayn with newfound respect.
In his heart, he no longer saw Rayn as a mere child but as one of his elite night watchmen.
Hamilton's eyes gleamed as he scrutinized Rayn several times, silently praising him in his mind. After experiencing killing and seeing blood, Rayn's entire mental state had indeed changed.
If the previous Rayn had a hint of immaturity, like a rough gemstone.
The current Rayn now gave off a different impression, as if the gemstone had been polished on one side, emitting a dazzling light that commanded attention.
"Was this your doing?" Hamilton asked again, even though he already knew the answer.
"Yes, sir. These two broke in late at night, intending to violate the girl. I happened to be nearby and heard the commotion, so I killed them," Rayn replied.
"Sheriff, according to the Imperial Law on Public Security, I should be within the law, right?" Rayn asked, his mindset completely transformed after killing.
Rayn had just thought about it, and there was nothing to hide from Hamilton.
After their previous interaction, Rayn knew that the sheriff was experienced, and any attempt to conceal the truth might backfire.
"Haha, of course, it's within the law! Rayn, come, tell me how you killed these two. Although your strength is impressive, it's almost impossible to defeat either of them head-on," Hamilton said, laughing as he approached Rayn and waved his hand backward.
Several elite night watchmen in black leather armor entered and began to deal with the corpses on the ground.
When they first saw the bodies, they were stunned, clearly shocked as well. They glanced up at Rayn, their eyes seemingly saying, "Such a small child, yet so ruthless!"
Soon, an efficient night watchman reported:
"Sheriff Hamilton, one of the deceased was confirmed to be Scarface, wearing a human skin mask, and the other was Blackbeard. They are both suspects in the child abduction case we've been chasing after. Additionally, these two are also the wanted fugitives on the bounty posters."
