Chapter 238: Being Tracked
Chapter 238: Being Tracked
Cui Meili was also at home. She came out of the kitchen with a bowl of soup and, seeing Lu Jiaxin, smiled and said, "Miss Lu, the food will be ready soon. Please have a seat."
Lu Jiaxin thanked her and sat down, asking curiously, "Zihui, where are your younger brother and sister?"
Cui Zihui placed the bags beside the sofa and replied with a beaming smile, "My eldest sister ordered a cake, and they've gone to pick it up."
Cui Meili used to make quite a lot of money, but Cui Zihui refused to take any of it because she felt that her sister's money was dirty. She also wouldn't use any of the things Cui Meili bought for her. However, after Lu Jiaxin's persuasion, and seeing that Cui Meili now had a proper job, she no longer rejected her sister.
Cui Zihui pulled Lu Jiaxin into her room and showed her some old photos. As Cui Zihui was about to take the college entrance examination, which would determine her future, Cui Meili let her have the room to herself and slept in the same room as her younger siblings.
Gu Wenfeng entered the kitchen and spoke in a low voice to Cui Meili, "Miss Cui, I just beat up a thug downstairs. There might be trouble, so we should leave with Miss Lu as soon as possible."
"What's the name of the person you beat up, and what does he look like?"
Upon hearing the name Ah Hao, Cui Meili's expression changed. "Ah Hao is the cousin of Lame Ge, the boss of the local gang in this area. Lame Ge is a ruthless character. If he finds out that you beat up his cousin, he won't let it go."
Most of the residents in the public housing estate were decent people, but there were also a few thugs like Ah Hao. Although Lu Jiaxin was wealthy, one could only guess what might happen if she fell into their hands here. However, once they left this place, those thugs wouldn't dare to be so arrogant.
Gu Wenfeng asked, "Will this cause trouble for you?"
Cui Meili shook her head. "No, it was that guy who first harassed Miss Lu. You two should leave quickly before he calls for backup. Then they won't be able to do anything."
Gu Wenfeng called Lu Jiaxin out and explained the situation to her, and the two of them left soon after.
The elderly man watching the car was sitting beside it, chatting with someone. However, he had noticed Gu Wenfeng and Lu Jiaxin as soon as they appeared. He walked up to them and pointed to the car, saying, "Boss, the car is intact."
Gu Wenfeng checked the car and confirmed that there was no damage at all. He then gave the elderly man another hundred dollars. It would cost a few hundred dollars to fix the car if it were vandalized, so this money was well spent.
Cui Meili didn't see them off, nor did she let her younger siblings do so. It was better to avoid unnecessary trouble. However, she could tell that Lu Jiaxin was no ordinary person. "This Miss Lu is amazing. You should definitely be friends with her so that you can have more opportunities in the future."
Cui Zihui felt that her sister was being too pragmatic, and she said unhappily, "What do you mean by more opportunities? I'm friends with Jiaxin because I like her. Big sister, when are you going to break up with that guy?"
Although Cui Meili's boyfriend treated her well, he was always getting into fights. Who knew if one day he would be killed on the street? Now that the relationship between the two sisters had improved, Cui Zihui wanted her sister to break up with him.
Cui Meili didn't brush her off. She said, "After you get into university, if he finds a proper job, I won't break up with him. But if he continues to mess around with gangs, I will."
After Cui Zihui got into university, she could apply for scholarships and subsidies, so Cui Meili wouldn't have to pay for her anymore. She only had to support her two younger siblings, which her salary could cover.
Hearing this, Cui Zihui felt a bit guilty and said, "Big sister, after I start working, I'll support our younger brother and sister."
"Then I'll be waiting."
When they returned home, Cui Zihui's younger sister said, "Sis, your classmate gave you a pair of sneakers. They're so pretty!"
Cui Zihui saw the white sneakers and immediately brightened up.
Lu Jiaxin had once mentioned in casual conversation with Lu Jiaxin that her father had given her a pair of sneakers for her tenth birthday, but sadly, she had outgrown them. Unexpectedly, Jiaxin had remembered this and bought her a new pair.
Cui Meili had noticed the bag earlier and thought Lu Jiaxin was very generous. "These are New Balance shoes, an American brand. A pair costs seven to eight hundred dollars, which is a quarter of my monthly salary. Zihui, you must thank her properly tomorrow."
"I will," Cui Zihui replied, secretly vowing to repay Jiaxin's kindness someday.
Not long after they set off, Gu Wenfeng realized they were being tailed. He deliberately took a detour, but the car behind them did the same, even after two changes in direction. He knew it was no coincidence.
"Jiaxin, check your seatbelt. I'm going to speed up," Gu Wenfeng said.
Hearing this, Lu Jiaxin's heart skipped a beat, but she didn't ask any questions. Instead, she quickly checked her seatbelt. "All good."
Gu Wenfeng drove at breakneck speed, overtaking more than ten cars in just three minutes. Lu Jiaxin was terrified, her heart in her throat, but she didn't utter a sound, not wanting to distract Gu Wenfeng.
After more than ten minutes of this, Gu Wenfeng slowed down and, seeing Lu Jiaxin's pale face, reassured her, "Don't worry, we've lost them."
"Pull over."
Gu Wenfeng quickly found a spot to stop, and Lu Jiaxin jumped out of the car, rushing to a garbage bag to vomit. She emptied her stomach of the food she had just eaten and felt a little better.
Gu Wenfeng handed her a bottle of water and asked, "Do you want to go to the hospital?"
Lu Jiaxin rinsed her mouth with the water and then threw the bottle into the garbage bag. Still shaken, she said, "It's getting late. Let's head home."
Once they returned home, Lu Jiaxin sincerely apologized to Gu Wenfeng, "I'm sorry, Feng Ge. I won't make such a mistake again."
She realized she had made a critical error by being too complacent. She had assumed that public housing wasn't like a slum and that the area had decent security, especially during the daytime, and with Gu Wenfeng by her side. She never expected that someone would dare to tail them in broad daylight after all these days. The security in Hong Kong was worse than she had imagined. Clearly, her comfort and ease in recent days had made her lower her guard.
Gu Wenfeng didn't say much after her apology; he merely made a suggestion, "We should hire two more bodyguards, and from now on, Xiao Xiao shouldn't be sent out alone."
Regardless of the reason behind their tail, the poor security in Hong Kong demanded extra caution. While they could manage in more affluent areas, the slums were an absolute no-go.
Lu Jiaxin nodded in agreement.
Gu Wenfeng recalled something she had said earlier, "I've made some inquiries. For the garden villa, yacht, and private jet, the total cost would be at least a hundred million. And for such a large villa, you'll definitely need to hire staff. There are also mooring fees for the yacht and maintenance fees for the plane. Just these three expenses would amount to millions."
"Feng Li Hua has a child, and that's her weakness. Once you become a wealthy lady, it would be easy for someone to target her weakness and use it against you."
"Miss, I suggest we pay her this month's salary plus an additional three months' worth as compensation and ask her to look for another job."
Lu Jiaxin was already aware of the reason behind Feng Li Hua's unemployment, "I was the one who asked her to take time off to spend with her daughter; she didn't request it herself. According to our agreement, she'll resign after my college entrance exam. Don't worry, I won't act so impulsively in the future."
There were only a little over four months left until the exam, and as long as they avoided areas with poor security, there shouldn't be any problems. Plus, Qian Xiaoxiao would be returning soon, so Gu Wenfeng didn't press the issue further.
