Chapter 235: Newt's Astonishment
Chapter 235: Newt's Astonishment
Newt entered the room within the trunk with ease, his eyes immediately taking in the surroundings. To his surprise, Kyle had done a decent job of setting up the place.
The furniture was neatly arranged, a stark contrast to the messy state of his own room. In the corner of the room stood two large bookshelves filled with scrolls bound in parchment.
As Newt walked over, he immediately sensed the presence of Extension Charms on the shelves, indicating that there were more scrolls than met the eye.
"What are these...?" he asked, his curiosity piqued.
Kyle's heart skipped a beat. He had completely forgotten about those!
Newt might turn a blind eye to his illegal magical creatures, but these copied texts from the Restricted Section were another matter.
"Oh, it's nothing," Kyle replied nonchalantly. "Just some notes I took during class. I keep them here for easy reference."
"Class notes? That's a lot!"
"Well, quite a few are from my studies in the library as well."
Newt ran his fingers over the scrolls, a soft smile on his face. "No wonder you received the Order of Merlin... I'm not surprised at all now."
Even when he was a student, Newt had only ever been interested in knowledge related to magical creatures. And even then, the sum of his class notes probably wouldn't amount to one of these scrolls.
"It's nothing," Kyle said, attributing it to the quick-writing quill. "Let me show you the rest."
Kyle opened a small door and stepped out.
Newt nodded and followed, only to be met with another surprise. The space beyond was far larger than he remembered when he had given the trunk to Kyle.
There were also several mountain ash trees that hadn't been there before, lush and vibrant, and Newt knew without looking that they would be home to a host of Bowtruckles.
But what caught his attention was a large, dark "rock" with three heads next to the trees.
"A three...headed dog?" Newt blinked, his eyes widening in surprise.
Before he could finish processing that sight, a massive shadow passed overhead.
Newt looked up, his expression turning even more stunned.
A dragon? ...A Norwegian Ridgeback, no less! Newt felt a sense of absurdity wash over him.
It had only been a year, and at Hogwarts no less. How had Kyle managed to acquire such dangerous creatures?
He pushed down his shock and continued to survey the area.
Oh, and there was a Mountain Troll as well... Though compared to the three-headed dog and the dragon, it seemed almost mundane.
"These are the... small animals you mentioned?"
Newt's question held a strange tone, and he wouldn't have been surprised if Kyle were expelled.
After all, he himself had been expelled for illegally breeding Magical Creatures with his friends at Hogwarts, and those had only been Erklings, a mere Threat Level 3.
And here Kyle had a dragon and a three-headed dog, both Threat Level 5 creatures. Just one of them would have been enough to get him expelled multiple times over.
This was like the student surpassing the master.
Had children these days become so bold as to start with the most dangerous Threat Level 5 creatures?
Kyle's gaze shifted uneasily. "Well... Fluffy here is around two years old, and Norvy is not even a year old yet. So, they are still quite young, technically."
"And the troll?"
"He has a small brain."
Seeing the look on Newt's face that clearly said, "you're definitely getting expelled," Kyle quickly explained their origins.
It wasn't a big deal; he just had to tell the truth.
...
"Are they all related to the Philosopher's Stone?"
After understanding the ins and outs of the situation, Newt frowned and asked, "But what about the Norwegian Ridgeback? Since the three-headed dog was borrowed from Dumbledore, why don't you return it to Hagrid and let it stay in the Forbidden Forest?"
"There was a little accident. It seems to have become friends with Norber..."
Kyle spread his hands helplessly. "I did send Fluffy back before, but he almost escaped from the Forbidden Forest several times. If Hagrid hadn't found him in time, he might have charged straight into the castle to look for me."
"I had no choice but to keep him inside as well, to avoid scaring the others."
Newt clicked his tongue, and even with his vast experience, he didn't know what to say for a moment.
The student had indeed surpassed the master...
After about ten minutes, Newt left the trunk, taking Norber the Norwegian Ridgeback and the troll with him.
As for Fluffy... he was only staying temporarily and would eventually have to return to the Forbidden Forest.
Although this decision displeased Fluffy, who sulked and rolled around hoping to be taken along, Kyle remained firm.
It wasn't that he didn't want to, but that he couldn't. Fluffy was Hagrid's treasure, and if he took him away, Hagrid would surely be distraught.
It took a while to soothe the aggrieved Fluffy, and only then did Kyle leave with Newt.
On the way back, Newt suddenly spoke up. "Kyle, I can help you take care of them for a while, but you can't keep them like this forever."
"You know what I mean."
"Yes, I understand," Kyle said softly. "By next year, I plan to send the troll back to the Forbidden Forest, and after I graduate, I'll go to Norway to return Norber as well."
"You plan to go yourself?" Newt asked.
"Yes." Kyle nodded. "I want to try. After all, I brought Norber into the trunk, so I should be the one to take him back."
Newt was silent for a moment, then let the matter drop.
Kyle was only in his second year, and graduation was still five years away. It wasn't an extremely long time, and the existence of the trunk could perfectly conceal the dragon without worrying about being discovered by others.
After that, the two switched to a lighter topic.
"So it's a female dragon. Why did you name her 'Norber'?" Newt asked curiously.
"That was Hagrid's idea," Kyle explained. "I noticed that she seemed to really like the name, so I didn't change it."
"I see, no wonder..."
...
After leaving the castle, the pair took a small path that led to the school gates and soon found themselves near the Hogsmeade station.
They stopped there.
Of course, Newt wouldn't take the train to leave; it was too slow. Only after stepping outside the school grounds could he use Disapparating.
The boundary was marked by two winged wart hog statues.
As they crossed the threshold, Newt turned and said, "It's important that you never let them out of the trunk while you're at school.
Oh, and remember to bring the Order of Merlin when you come to pick them up. Tina has been eager to see it ever since she heard the news."
"I will," Kyle said with a smile.
