Chapter 231: The Representative Duel
Chapter 231: The Representative Duel
"Huh?"
In the Duel Academy's high-level conference room, Professor Crowler slammed his hand on the table and stood up, his eyes wide in disbelief.
"Why is it necessary to change the candidate, Mr. Noh? For the friendly exchange duel between Duel Academy and the North School, it would be best to keep Marufuji Ryo as the representative, just like last year."
He pointed to Ryo Marufuji, who was standing by the side of the conference room, listening to the discussion.
"I strongly recommend that Ryo Marufuji be sent again this year to maintain our headquarters' winning streak!"
Chancellor Shark, bald-headed, leaned back in his chair and said, "However, the North School has explicitly stated that they will send a first-year student to compete this year. If we send an upperclassman from our side, it might seem a bit like bullying, don't you think?"
"A first-year student!?" Professor Crowler exclaimed.
"Yes," Chancellor Shark nodded, "For this reason, it would be more appropriate for us to send a first-year student as well."
As he spoke, he turned to Ryo Marufuji.
"What do you think, Marufuji-san?"
Ryo Marufuji remained indifferent. "I don't mind."
Chancellor Shark nodded. "So, the question is who will be the new representative. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?"
The teachers exchanged glances, but no one spoke up immediately.
"Yuki Judai," Ryo Marufuji spoke up, breaking the silence.
"Eh!?"
Professor Crowler, known for his greed, was the first to show displeasure at the suggestion.
A failing student from Osiris Red as the representative?
"Oh?"
Chancellor Shark also seemed surprised as he glanced at Ryo Marufuji, clearly not expecting him to proactively recommend Judai.
As always, Professor Daigoji leaned back in his chair with a smile, gently stroking his beloved cat, Pharaoh: "It seems like this is turning into something troublesome."
The teachers in the room wore strange expressions and began to discuss the proposal.
"Yuki Judai? Are you serious?"
"Isn't that inappropriate?"
Everyone acknowledged Judai's dueling prowess, and no teacher doubted his combat abilities.
However, despite his talent, he was still a student of Osiris Red, and in the academy's history, there had never been a representative from the Red Dorm.
Furthermore, Judai was known for his laziness and lack of academic achievement, failing most of his classes. He slept in class, didn't turn in assignments, and was often absent, earning the reputation of a problem student in the eyes of the faculty.
Thus, the teachers' first reaction to the suggestion of sending him to represent the academy was one of discomfort and disagreement.
"I've dueled him," Ryo Marufuji said, "and I believe he can show us an interesting duel."
You must be joking.
Professor Crowler, an advocate of elitism, was furious, his face contorting in anger.
How could they let a failing student from the Red Dorm represent the academy? This preposterous suggestion should be immediately rejected to uphold the reputation of our elite school!
"Hmm, that's a good idea," Chancellor Shark smiled and nodded, "His strength is undeniable, and it is indeed a good idea for him to represent us."
What!?
Professor Crowler was flabbergasted.
Chancellor, are you alright? How could this be a good idea? It's unthinkable to let a failing student be our representative!
Chancellor Shark continued, "So, if there are no other candidates..."
It was then that Professor Crowler realized they hadn't finalized the decision yet. As long as there was someone who could challenge this Yuki Judai...
"Then I nominate Fujiki Yougen!" Professor Crowler hastily interjected.
"Oh? A student from the Yellow Dorm this time?" Chancellor Shark showed an approving expression, "Indeed, he is also a very special and powerful student."
However, the fact that the two most promising newcomers this year were from the Red and Yellow Dorms was quite unexpected.
"Hmm? Oh, I..."
Chancellor Shark turned to look at Ryo Marufuji.
"What about you, Ryo? What are your thoughts?"
It wasn't unusual that the chancellor would seek the opinion of a student before making a decision. All the teachers present understood the special relationship between Chancellor Shark and Marufuji.
Not only was Marufuji the Caesar of the academy and acknowledged as the strongest student representative, but he was also known to be Chancellor Shark's personal disciple, a fact that only those present in the room were aware of.
Chancellor Shark had been a teacher at the Dueling Dojo before becoming the principal of Duel Academy. Marufuji was his most outstanding disciple and the one he was most proud of.
"Of course, I have no objections," Marufuji replied with a smile.
And so, the matter was settled.
Professor Daigoji announced the school's decision during his alchemy class—the duel between Fujiki Yougen and Judai Yuki would determine the representative for the exchange duel. The duel was scheduled for the upcoming weekend.
Both parties had already been informed beforehand, so it wasn't a surprise. However, Judai was thrilled, as if he had been eagerly anticipating this duel since enrollment.
Yougen, on the other hand, remained calm and continued his usual routine throughout the week.
His laboratory had expanded, with new personnel and even faculty members joining his team. The department was now divided into modules, and several teams were working on projects based on the directions he had set.
Some new results had emerged recently.
These were primarily from the two cards obtained from the Kaiba Corporation, one of which was the "Death Deck Destruction Virus" that the CEO had frequently used in the past.
To be honest, Yougen wasn't very accustomed to using the original anime version of the Death Toxin. Although it seemed cool to destroy all of the opponent's monsters with an Attack Strength of 1500 or higher in their deck, it also carried the risk of triggering the effect by battle destruction and helping the opponent fill their graveyard.
He preferred the older version of the Death Toxin that had been modified after the physical card release.
[Trap Card, Death Deck Destruction Virus
Effect: Sacrifice an opponent's monster with an Attack Strength of 1000 or lower. Destroy all monsters with an Attack Strength of 1500 or higher in your opponent's hand, field, and those drawn within the next three turns.]
This version of the effect was also a forever-limited card until it was weakened and had its effect text modified in 2015.
However, even before the change, the Death Toxin had specialized upper-level card groups and had a significant impact on the environment. Yougen was already working on constructing a deck around it.
The other card, also obtained from the Kaiba Corporation, was even more interesting.
It was a card used by the CEO during his famous duel with Yami Yugi in the Sky Dome.
Spell Card - Voice of the Heaven's Obedience.
The anime effect allowed the player to pay 1000 Life Points and declare an 8-star or higher monster card. If the opponent had that monster in their deck, it would be added to the player's hand.
The physical card version of the effect was even stronger. It required paying 2000 Life Points but allowed the player to declare a monster card of any level. If the opponent had the declared monster in their deck, the player could choose to add it to their hand or Special Summon it to their field in Attack Position, ignoring the summoning conditions.
Being able to take control of an opponent's monster was a rare and powerful effect, and it would undoubtedly be a great tool for mind games when used with known information about the opponent's deck.
With classes, research, and daily duel practices, the week passed quickly.
And finally, the day of the duel with Judai arrived.
Long duel ahead!
