Chapter 230: Inviting the Moon: It's Better to be Feared than Respected
Chapter 230: Inviting the Moon: It's Better to be Feared than Respected
On the first day of October, by the shores of Dongting Lake, the Mei family mansion was bustling with guests.
The engagement ceremony between the Murong and Mei families was being held at the Meiyu Mountain Villa.
The who's who of the Jiangnan martial arts world were in attendance: the Nangong family, the Jiangnan Thunder Hall, the Huainan Wang family, the Nanpai Five Tigers' Duanmendao Peng family, the Huangshan family, as well as the Hankou Chen family, the Lianguang Qin family, the Jiujiang Luo family, and the Sanxiang Liu family, to name a few.
One could say that the essence of the Jiangnan martial arts world was gathered here, perhaps an exaggeration, but it was indeed an impressive gathering.
Jiang Feng presented a pair of pearls and a pair of jade screens, and then entered the villa with Inviting Moon.
"Young Master Jiang, Inv—"
Seeing Inviting Moon shake her head, the host, Mr. and Mrs. Murong, wisely stopped short and respectfully invited the two guests into the villa.
"Please feel free to explore the villa at your leisure. The engagement banquet will be held at noon, and we hope you will honor us with your presence." Murong Yong said.
Jiang Feng didn't stand on ceremony, even without Inviting Moon by his side. As the brother of Yan Nantian, he was certainly entitled to a seat of honor.
"The Jiangnan Plum Garden indeed offers a unique scenery," Jiang Feng remarked, his thoughts drifting to the Xingyun Villa in Baoding Prefecture, which also boasted a plum garden, though it couldn't compare in size to the Meiyu Mountain Villa.
He wondered about Ximen Chuixue's Ten Thousand Plum Villa; perhaps he would have a chance to visit it someday.
Inviting Moon surveyed the surroundings and nodded in approval. Although the Meiyu Mountain Villa fell short of the Embroidery Valley, it was, after all, a venerable martial arts family with a deep heritage. The decor, layout, and feng shui were all top-notch, and there was nothing worth complaining about.
As the two strolled through the plum garden, the early guests, though unfamiliar with them, could sense their extraordinary aura. Their graceful demeanor and whispered conversation commanded respect, and so the guests politely kept their distance.
Those who were invited to the engagement ceremony between the Murong and Mei families were not the impetuous sort.
Of course, this only spoke to their awareness of social cues; it didn't mean they would act the same way with familiar acquaintances.
After all, the Jiangnan martial arts world was not one big happy family.
"I heard your cousin died on Emei Mountain. He didn't even land a blow and was killed by a single palm strike from Blood Hand Du," came a mocking voice from a short distance away.
"Hmph, that's because you two were lucky. If you had been on the mountain then, you probably wouldn't be attending the Murong and Mei families' engagement banquet now."
"Hmph, that's not certain. Our brother's combined sword technique is more than a match for Du Sha."
"But I remember that your brother's combined sword technique still lost to Feng Xiaoyu."
"That was a year ago. If Feng Xiaoyu were here now, our brother could still defeat him!"
"Hehe, you know very well that Feng Xiaoyu also died on Emei Mountain."
"Yes, along with your cousin. They say they were traveling in Shu and missed the opportunity, but ended up losing their lives instead."
"You!"
"What do you mean, 'you'? Do you want to fight?"
"Enough! This is the Meiyu Mountain Villa of the Mei family. If you want to fight, take it outside!"
"Brother Luo, it was the Ding brothers who started it!"
"So, the disciples of the Huainan Eagle Claw King are all talk now?"
"Me!"
"Don't my words count for anything?"
"Of course, of course, we won't say anything more."
"Hmph, you'd better not show your faces in Huainan!"
With those words, a short youth departed, followed by two young masters with swords on their backs. Upon seeing Inviting Moon, their eyes lit up, and then they noticed Jiang Feng.
Jiang Feng's eyebrows rose as he noticed the scholar approaching cautiously and bowing respectfully. "I am Luo Fangya. It is an honor to meet you, Master Jiang, and Lady Yihuagong."
Intrigued, Inviting Moon turned to face Luo Fangya. "You know me?"
"The unique details of the Yihuagong attire set it apart from the rest. I just couldn't identify which Lady it was," Luo Fangya explained, his hands clasped together.
"The Luo family, known for their keen eyes, indeed has some impressive observational skills." Inviting Moon nodded in acknowledgment. "I am Inviting Moon."
Luo Fangya's heart skipped a beat as he stammered, "I am blessed to have encountered you, Lady."
Jiang Feng's lips curled up in amusement, while Inviting Moon shot him a displeased glance. "I didn't want the Murong couple to reveal my identity," she said flatly.
"I understand, and I assure you, I won't let any irrelevant people disturb you, Lady, or Master Jiang," Luo Fangya replied, bowing once more.
After bowing, he slowly took a couple of steps back, not daring to interrupt their stroll through the plum garden, and quickly turned to leave.
As soon as Luo Fangya was out of earshot, Jiang Feng burst into laughter.
Inviting Moon couldn't help but feel a bit annoyed. "What are you laughing about?"
Jiang Feng composed himself and nodded slightly. "I'm envious of how Yihuagong is revered in the martial arts world. Everyone who sees you treats you with such... respect."
"If you want to say fear, then just say it," Inviting Moon remarked.
"No, no, no," Jiang Feng emphasized. "Respect."
Jiang Feng's laughter faded, but Inviting Moon smiled instead. "The martial world is a place where the strong prey on the weak. Yan Nantian earned respect, but he almost got besieged on Emei Mountain, didn't he?"
This was the typical mindset of a hegemon.
While Inviting Moon might not be classified as a hegemon, it wasn't because she lacked the capability. She simply had no interest in controlling power. If she ever desired to dominate the martial world, it would be challenging to find someone capable of restraining her.
Or perhaps, her pride was such that she disdained ruling over the motley crew that made up the martial world. Even the renowned masters weren't worthy of her attention.
There were hardly five people in the entire martial world who caught her eye!
Whether it was fortunate or unfortunate, Jiang Feng had somehow managed to capture her interest. He had even gone so far as to develop romantic feelings for her, and now he had taken the initiative to pursue her.
But Jiang Feng was afraid. When you knew exactly what kind of person this woman was in the original timeline, it was challenging to maintain a calm mindset. And he couldn't very well tell Inviting Moon about the other world.
While Inviting Moon wasn't particularly clever, she wasn't foolish either. If he rejected her too harshly, it might trigger a rebellious mindset or even turn her love into hatred, and Jiang Feng feared that he might not get a second chance.
So, for now, Jiang Feng maintained his distance, biding his time for a change. Of course, if he could somehow alter Inviting Moon's personality and outlook...
Jiang Feng: ()
However, when Inviting Moon stated that it was better to be feared than respected, Jiang Feng realized that changing her mindset and personality would be as difficult as climbing heaven.
He couldn't change Yan Nantian's unwavering sense of righteousness, and he couldn't change Inviting Moon's relentless pursuit of dominance.
Therefore, without giving her a chance to develop an obsession, and by preventing her from feeling dominant, how would she react? Jiang Feng's eyes flickered, and he calmly said, "You're right."
