Chapter 23: Recharged?
Chapter 23: Recharged?
The next morning, Jing He was awakened by the excited cries of Gastly.
“Grrrrr!”
Jing He saw Gastly clutching his old laptop, with a live battle stream playing on the screen.
Jing He rubbed his head a couple of times, got up, and poured himself a glass of water. After taking a sip, he felt much more alert and walked curiously behind Gastly. When he saw what Gastly was watching, he couldn't help but sputter.
“Pfft—”
Even though Jing He had braced himself for the possibility that Gastly might be watching a horror movie to learn scare tactics, or a battle stream to mock the battles, or listening to Juzi's sneaky techniques, he never expected to see—
A dairy farmer milking a Miltank!
“Grr!”
Gastly, who had been "ambushed" by a splash of water from behind, let out a startled cry.
Again, the "force from behind"!
It glared at Jing He with a fierce look.
“No, no,” Jing He wiped the water from his mouth, “I didn’t know you had this hobby.”
“Moo—”
The computer emitted a contented moo from the Miltank.
Time seemed to freeze for a few seconds.
“Grr! Grr!”
Gastly pointed to a corner of the screen, which displayed a line of text—MooMoo Fresh Milk, making your Pokemon healthier!
It was just an advertisement for MooMoo Fresh Milk.
“Uh, sorry, I didn’t notice,” Jing He paused, but his tone lacked any real apology.
Even if it’s an ad, why are you so excited?
Gastly, looking furious, clicked the refresh button, forcing the ad to play again.
Since Jing He didn’t have a membership, he had to wait through the ads every time he watched a video. Gastly had just seen a crucial moment when it jumped to the next episode, and the ad popped up on its own.
“Cough.” Jing He cleared his throat, “You know, it’s strange. The rich people all have memberships, while the poor ones have to wait for ads. Isn’t it a waste of time to show ads to people who can’t afford them?”
“Grr! Grr!”
Gastly, clearly distracted, nodded seriously.
Exactly, exactly!
But it was also quite cunning and quickly brought the conversation back.
“Grr!”
It made a spitting face, loudly “condemning” Jing He for spitting water on it without brushing his teeth.
“Alright, alright,” Jing He raised his hands in surrender, “You just want to try this MooMoo Fresh Milk, right? I’ll order it for you, okay?”
After spending so much time with Gastly, Jing He knew its little tricks all too well.
Gastly: |ω)
Jing He shook his head in exasperation, grabbed his phone, and quickly scanned through his messages, pausing on the bank information section.
“Why did I have to exaggerate about Daimu? Such an obvious hint, and I didn’t catch it?”
Yesterday, he had praised Daimu for understanding others, but his “skipping the bill” was a clear hint that Daimu was short on money, to the point where he couldn’t even afford a meal.
“Grr?”
Why didn’t you just tell him?
“Ha.” Jing He chuckled, “As a teacher, it’s a ‘dishonor’ to talk about money directly with students.”
Gastly rolled its eyes.
It was hard to tell if Jing He was vain or not.
“Good morning, Jing He.”
“Good morning, Jing He-sensei—”
“.”
Jing He, accompanied by Gastly, entered the academy with a puzzled look. This morning, many more people had greeted him than usual.
But he smiled and responded to every friendly greeting.
Back in his office, Jing He’s confusion only grew.
He knew his position well. As a Pokemon psychology mentor at Kanaz Academy, he was more of a half-transparent, optional teacher with few acquaintances. So why were so many people greeting him today?
However, it was clear that his confusion didn't immediately resolve itself when he returned to the consultation room.
Gastly, too, seemed a bit puzzled by the situation.
But Gastly didn't mind. After returning to the room, it excitedly paced back and forth, eager for the evening to arrive. This morning, after a combination of adorable pleading and heartfelt requests, Jing He had ordered a box of MooMoo Milk to be delivered to their home tonight. All Gastly wanted now was for time to pass more quickly.
"Keh, keh—"
Meanwhile, Jing He made himself a cup of coffee and sat down at his desk, turning on his computer.
He skillfully navigated to the League's official website, briefly browsing some current news before logging into his account.
He wanted to see if Mewtwo had replied.
However, the moment he logged in, the computer started beeping wildly, as if it had frozen.
"Keh?"
Gastly couldn't help but poke its head over to see what was happening.
Jing He was also taken aback.
Could it be that Mewtwo had somehow followed the internet connection?
But when he clicked on the notifications, he realized it wasn't Mewtwo's reply. Instead, it was a flood of comments on the research paper he had published!
"Hmm?"
To be honest, Jing He's paper hadn't been particularly popular. It had been out for a while, but it had never gained much attention or received many comments.
This was quite normal, considering he wasn't a well-known doctor or even a full-fledged researcher. His paper naturally didn't attract much attention.
Staring at the "999+" notifications that kept piling up, Jing He felt a bit bewildered.
What was going on?
He quickly muted the computer's alert sounds to stop the incessant beeping.
Curious, he didn't immediately click on the overwhelming "999+" notifications but instead headed straight to the researcher channel.
To his surprise, he found his paper, "The Potential Link Between Pokemon Personalities and Ability Values," pinned as the sixth entry on the first page of the top-pinned papers.
‘Was this... boosted?’
Otherwise, it was hard to explain why a paper that had previously garnered little attention suddenly became one of the most popular.
This also explained why so many people had been greeting him more enthusiastically this morning. It was likely due to the sudden surge in interest in his paper.
He cautiously clicked on the paper and scrolled down the page.
Soon, he saw a comment that had been pinned to the top due to its high engagement.
"An interesting direction, but it lacks concrete data to support the argument. If the issue is with the equipment, perhaps I can offer some assistance. — Professor Oak"
"Huh?"
Jing He was taken aback.
Professor Oak?
No wonder the paper had gained such high visibility.
It turned out that Professor Oak, a renowned authority in the Pokemon world, had commented on his paper, and the comment was positive enough to spark a lively discussion among researchers and trainers.
As one of the most influential figures in the Pokemon world, Professor Oak's influence was immense. Even a simple comment from him could create such a stir.
The sudden popularity of the paper also brought more attention to his "Jing He's Pokemon Psychological Consultation Room," which had previously only seen visits from Mewtwo over the past month.
【Little Growlithe】: Excuse me, if a Pokemon stops eating, could it be a psychological issue?
【Eevee Eats Cabbage】: Hi, sorry to bother you, but what can be done if a Pokemon has low self-esteem?
【Math Magician】: Should humans really coexist with Pokemon?
Questions like these started pouring in.
