Chapter 23: Memory and First Aid
【Download?】
When Lu Qing saw the notification prompt, he froze—then broke into a smile.
His Abilities really did keep surprising him.
He’d been struggling with how to make headway on the Hundred Herbs Scripture, and now, before he could even ask, a ready-made solution had arrived—right in the form of a free download.
Without hesitation, Lu Qing selected “Download.”
【Downloading… Progress: 1%…】
Lu Qing waited quietly. But after a long while, the progress bar hadn’t moved.
He paused, then thought to himself. Picking up the Hundred Herbs Scripture, he began flipping through it slowly, page by page.
Sure enough, as he read, the progress bar began to inch forward.
【1%, 2%, 3%… 98%, 99%, 100%】
【Download Complete: Hundred Herbs Scripture. Begin studying?】
By the time Lu Qing had finished reading through the entire book, his Abilities confirmed the download was complete. A new notification popped up.
Without a second thought, Lu Qing selected “Study.”
In an instant, a flood of information surged through his mind—like a sudden burst of clarity. He absorbed the entire text with astonishing speed, grasping its content with remarkable ease.
From the outside, Lu Qing simply sat holding the book, staring blankly. No one could see the whirlwind of transformation taking place inside his mind.
“This herbal art truly is vast and profound,” he murmured, coming back to himself after a while, a look of awe on his face.
He had now fully memorized the entire Hundred Herbs Scripture, and had developed a solid grasp of its core content. The names and properties of hundreds of medicinal herbs were now second nature to him.
Still, this knowledge remained theoretical—mere book learning.
To truly master it, he would need hands-on experience, comparing the texts with real herbs in the field.
Yet even this mental imprint had already left a deep impression. The Hundred Herbs Scripture listed hundreds of herbs—but that was still just a fraction of the total plant life in the world. The way they could be combined and transformed into powerful remedies was nothing short of miraculous.
Now more than ever, Lu Qing felt drawn to the art of herbs.
Even after committing the whole book to memory, he continued flipping through its pages—reviewing, reflecting, seeking deeper understanding.
Chen Laodaifu had been waiting inside the house, expecting Lu Qing to come seek his guidance.
But after a long wait, and still no sign of him, the old doctor stepped outside to investigate.
He found Lu Qing sitting in the courtyard, completely absorbed in the book, eyes alight with fascination.
Xiao Yan, meanwhile, was off in a corner, catching butterflies, quietly and without disturbance.
Seeing this, Chen Laodaifu felt a quiet warmth in his heart.
So Lu Qing hadn’t been bluffing. He really was serious about herbs.
Otherwise, how could he be so captivated by a dry, dense text like the Hundred Herbs Scripture?
But the book wasn’t easy to master. Just as Chen Laodaifu was about to ask Lu Qing if he had any questions, a sudden commotion broke out at the entrance.
“Chen Laodaifu! Chen Laodaifu, are you home?”
“I’m here!” The old doctor hurried out, alarmed by the urgency in their voices.
Lu Qing was startled as well and stood up, book still in hand.
Then he saw several villagers carrying a limp, unconscious man into the yard. Chen Laodaifu directed them to lay the man in the center.
Lu Qing recognized the man immediately—another villager, a man he knew as Zhao Shu.
Zhao Shu was soaked through, his face ashen, his belly swollen. He was unconscious.
“Step back,” Chen Laodaifu said calmly. “Let me take a look.”
The villagers obeyed instantly, stepping away. One of them, Wang Da An, happened to move right in front of Lu Qing.
Lu Qing gently tapped his shoulder. “Da An Ge.”
Wang Da An jumped, startled. Seeing it was Lu Qing, he blinked in surprise. “Lu Qing? What are you doing here?”
“Not now,” Lu Qing said quietly. “What happened to Zhao Shu?”
“He fell into the river,” Wang Da An replied. “If we hadn’t been nearby, he’d have been swept away.”
“How did he fall in?” Lu Qing asked, puzzled. “You guys usually fish together, right?”
“He wasn’t with us today,” Wang Da An admitted. “He went fishing somewhere else.”
“Where?”
Wang Da An glanced around nervously, then leaned in and whispered, “It’s… probably the same place you fished yesterday. The one with the big catch.”
“…” Lu Qing fell silent.
“That place was pretty flat, though,” he said slowly. “I even fixed the bank. He shouldn’t have fallen.”
“I don’t know,” Wang Da An said. “We heard his cries. When we got there, he was already far downstream—nearly submerged.”
He paused, then added, “Oh, and when we pulled him out… he was still clutching his fishing rod. The line was completely broken.”
Lu Qing fell silent again. A suspicion stirred in his mind.
Still, he asked, “Does Zhao Shu know how to swim?”
“No,” Wang Da An said. “If he could swim, he wouldn’t have drowned. The current wasn’t strong.”
“…” Lu Qing was speechless.
Not knowing how to swim, yet going fishing alone—then diving into the river to retrieve his rod? Zhao Shu was reckless beyond belief.
Based on years of fishing experience, Lu Qing had already guessed what had happened. But until Zhao Shu woke up, he couldn’t be certain.
He turned to the center of the yard.
Chen Laodaifu had already learned the full story from the villagers. He immediately pried open Zhao Shu’s mouth, checking for obstructions.
Finding none, he pressed both hands firmly over Zhao Shu’s chest and abdomen.
With a subtle motion—perhaps a technique or method known only to him—Chen Laodaifu pressed down, and instantly, Zhao Shu heaved forward, vomiting a large gush of filthy water.
The old doctor pressed again—another flood of water erupted.
Each press brought up more water. After seven or eight rounds, the vomit became thin and clear.
By the time he’d pressed a dozen times, Zhao Shu suddenly coughed—then slowly, his eyes fluttered open.
“He’s awake! He’s awake!”
“Lao Zhao’s back!”
“Chen Laodaifu is a true miracle worker!”
The villagers erupted in joy, marveling at the old doctor’s skill.
Earlier, when they’d carried Zhao Shu in, his chest had barely moved. They’d thought he was gone.
And yet, with just a few skilled presses, Chen Laodaifu had brought him back.
Zhao Shu coughed a few times, then slowly regained awareness. Dazed, he looked around.
“Where… am I?” he murmured.
