Chapter 23: I Can Be Even More Reckless
Ivan smacked his lips after flipping through the book. He couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor master who had to recount his experiences while being watched by Lockhart.
The detailed descriptions clearly indicated that the author had had many close encounters with the stinky Trolls.
Ivan closed the book and put it back in its place. Even though he now knew the Trolls' weaknesses, he still needed to make various preparations.
For example, improving his Potions skills, or learning more powerful spells. In short, he needed more Skill Points.
The way to obtain Skill Points, besides attending regular classes, was to answer the professors' questions during each lesson.
However, Ivan soon discovered that being a good student wasn't as easy as he thought, especially since even answering questions had become a competition.
No matter what class it was, as soon as the professor asked a question, the Know-It-All Miss would be the first to raise her hand high and answer quickly and accurately once given permission.
After Ivan joined the competition, the classes turned into a battlefield between the two of them, with two arms always raised high.
Hermione seemed to enjoy the challenge and became even more diligent in her studies. She often stayed in the library with Ivan until closing time before returning to the dorm.
Ivan was almost in tears. He just wanted to earn some Academic Points, but with Hermione's interference, his gains were significantly reduced.
Unable to bear it any longer, Ivan decided to use some "special" methods.
"Disarming Charm and Impediment Jinx are the next spells we will focus on. They will be among the most frequently used spells in your future."
In Charms class, the short Professor Flitwick stood on a stool, teaching the young wizards common spells and occasionally demonstrating with his wand.
With years of teaching experience, Professor Flitwick quickly engaged the students.
"Alright, does anyone know the incantation for the Disarming Charm? What is its effect?" Professor Flitwick asked the class.
Hermione was the first to raise her hand high and glanced at Ivan, who was her only real competitor in class.
However, to Hermione's surprise, Ivan stood up directly and addressed Professor Flitwick.
"The incantation for the Disarming Charm is Expelliarmus, Professor. Its effect is to disarm the opponent upon impact, and it also has a certain amount of force, which can push the opponent back. The strength of this effect depends on the caster's skill and the difference in magical power between the two parties."
Professor Flitwick, who was standing on the stool, was about to call on Hermione but was taken aback by Ivan's sudden response.
"Well said, Gryffindor gets two points."
Professor Flitwick quickly recovered, but he wasn't entirely pleased with Ivan's behavior and added a reminder.
"Additionally, Mr. Hals, I think you should raise your hand before answering questions next time."
"Understood, Professor", Ivan replied, satisfied as he saw the reward in his system bar and sat down.
Ivan's obedient attitude made Professor Flitwick nod, thinking that Ivan was just very enthusiastic about learning. He cleared his throat and continued.
"Next question, the Impediment Jinx"
Before Professor Flitwick could finish, Ivan shot up again.
"The incantation for the Impediment Jinx is Impedimenta (Impedimenta), and its effect is to create a magical barrier that blocks attacks from one direction. The advantage is that multiple barriers can be stacked for stronger defense, but the disadvantage is that it cannot defend against attacks from other directions."
"Am I correct, Professor?" Ivan smiled obediently at Professor Flitwick.
Hermione widened her eyes and stared at Ivan, too stunned to even raise her hand this time.
The other young wizards trembled under the scholarly aura of Ivan. They couldn't believe that answering a question required such fierce competition. It was too brutal.
"Correct." Professor Flitwick struggled to utter a word, waving his hand to signal Ivan to sit down. This time, he didn't even award any points.
Ivan didn't mind. The system's bonus points only required the professor's acknowledgment, and the points were determined by the difficulty of the question.
"Let's move on to the next question", Professor Flitwick cleared his throat, glancing at Ivan before quickly continuing. "Actually, I'll just continue the lecture myself."
After learning how to answer questions quickly in class, Ivan accumulated Skill Points much faster. After all, while Hermione was a top student and very smart, her face was too thin-skinned to match Ivan's bold moves.
Every time she saw Ivan, her cute face would puff up with anger. At first, she would remind him that quick answering in class was wrong and that they should compete fairly.
Ivan firmly shook his head. What a joke. Could such competition among top students be called quick answering? It certainly didn't violate Hogwarts' rules.
The founders of Hogwarts probably never imagined anyone could be so "enthusiastic" about learning!
Ivan thought that even if they knew, they would shed tears of relief in their graves.
Hermione was speechless when Ivan brought up her previous deduction of five points during the flying class, now feeling guilty and needing to make it up tenfold or even a hundredfold. She had no more arguments.
While Ivan was delighted, the professors of various subjects were all headache-ridden, unsure how to handle him.
They had seen misbehaving young wizards before, but this was the first time they encountered someone who answered questions so aggressively. Moreover, Ivan always answered correctly and precisely, and his sincere attitude after making mistakes made it hard for the professors to scold him.
Tasting the sweetness of success, Ivan decided to push his limits further by targeting the final stronghold—Potions class, gradually probing the boundaries of Professor Snape.
Snape, who was always biased towards Slytherin and hostile to Gryffindor, was not so easy to deal with. At the end of class, he personally warned Ivan that if he saw him stand up to answer questions without permission again, he would deduct all the House Points Ivan had earned in other subjects!
But the moment Snape left, the system's notification sound rang as expected.
【Ding, Potions class has ended
Overall class performance: Satisfactory (Excellent)
Evaluator: Severus Snape
Reward: Skill Points * 10】
"Such a stubborn pride", Ivan couldn't help but comment. He then stroked his chin thoughtfully, wondering if he could push a bit further?
