Chapter 229: The Owl That Witnessed Everything
Chapter 229: The Owl That Witnessed Everything
The Basilisk hesitated for a moment, then lowered its head. Ivan directly jumped onto its head, grabbing the protruding part on top to stabilize himself.
The Basilisk seemed to be used to this, carrying Ivan as it moved away from the statue's interior, passing through the Chamber of Secrets' grand hall and navigating the complex pipes, retracing the path Ivan had taken to get there.
Ivan, perched on the Basilisk's head, found the long journey through the pipes much more comfortable this time.
From the research lab's documents, Ivan learned that the Basilisk was not only used by Salazar Slytherin as an experimental subject and pet but also as a means of transportation and an elevator.
After all, the entrance statue was built so high, and the pipe was so long that only a creature like the Basilisk could move freely through it.
More importantly, riding on the Basilisk's head gave one a sense of grandeur!
Perhaps this was the true reason Slytherin kept the Basilisk.
After about ten minutes of traveling through the pipes, a speck of light began to shine down from above. Ivan realized he was about to return to the surface.
He recited the Parseltongue command "Open" again, and soon the specks of light grew larger, accompanied by a faint rumbling from above.
In the bathroom, the circular pool formed by the Sink rotated once more, revealing the circular pipe below.
The large, flat snake head emerged from the hole, followed by a long segment of its body. Its dark, yellow, bulbous eyes surveyed the familiar yet strange surroundings.
Ivan jumped down from the Basilisk's head, turned away, and spoke to it.
"Hiss (Go back to where you belong!)"
"Hiss (Eat Acromantula)" The Basilisk was agitated and wanted to fully emerge from the pipe but was stopped by Ivan's rebuke.
"Listen, go back to your nest. Next time, when I come back, I'll take you to eat Acromantula!"
The Basilisk hesitated, then slowly turned and slithered back into the pipe.
Ivan sighed with relief, sensing that the Basilisk had obeyed his command.
While Parseltongue was a powerful tool for wizards to control serpent-like creatures, it was difficult to subdue a powerful magical creature like the Basilisk with just Parseltongue alone.
Fortunately, according to the data left by Slytherin, once he fused with the Basilisk's blood, the power of Parseltongue would be significantly enhanced, and he might be able to control the Basilisk as a pet.
Thinking about this, Ivan became even more eager.
The Chamber Entrance slowly closed, and intermittent sobs reached Ivan's ears.
Ivan glanced at the toilet in the farthest corner of the bathroom and shook his head.
Moaning Myrtle really could cry; she had been at it for half a day and still hadn't calmed down.
But this was good in a way. He had been worried about being seen by Moaning Myrtle when he came out, but now he didn't have to worry about that.
Ivan organized his gains as he walked back to the dormitory.
"Ivan, something's wrong!" When he reached the Gryffindor common room, Harry and Ron, looking panicked, ran up to him.
"What happened?" Ivan asked, feeling a sense of unease.
Harry and Ron didn't answer but urgently pulled him along. Ivan didn't resist. When they entered the dormitory, he understood why they were so anxious.
In Ivan's line of sight, the large dormitory was in a mess, with books and clothes scattered all over the floor.
The bizarre-looking "Owls" he kept had somehow escaped from their cages. Maca, in a panic, had hidden on the bedpost and only flew over urgently when she saw Ivan.
Ivan stared at the open suitcase, his expression grim.
He had been worried about not finding any clues in the Chamber of Secrets and had temporarily spared Tom’s life. Before heading to the Chamber, he had sealed the Horcrux and locked it in the suitcase, which he then shoved under the bed.
So the intruder must have come for the Horcrux!
Ivan hurriedly checked the suitcase and, as expected, found that the black leather Diary was missing. Ivan was stunned. Who could have wanted this Horcrux?
Apart from Lucius Malfoy, no one else should have known that he had it.
Since obtaining the Horcrux, he had carried it with him most of the time, and when he wasn’t, it was always kept securely. Tom Riddle had no chance to tempt anyone else.
Ivan thought about who might have stolen the Horcrux and suddenly turned to stare fiercely at the chubby rat lounging by the window.
Pettigrew was leisurely munching on a Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Bean, seemingly indifferent to the mess in the dormitory. It didn’t concern him at all.
But when Ivan’s gaze fell on him, Pettigrew felt a chill run through him. Even the bean in his hand lost its flavor, and he quickly jumped into Ron’s arms, trembling as he burrowed into Ron’s pocket.
Ivan averted his gaze. Since Pettigrew still had the nerve to stay, the Horcrux theft was likely not his doing.
"Ivan, did you lose something important?" Harry noticed Ivan’s troubled expression and asked.
"Just a notebook, black cover. Not really important", Ivan hesitated for a moment before responding.
Ivan didn’t want to involve Harry and Ron, so he only described the Horcrux and asked if they had seen it.
Harry and Ron both shook their heads.
"Where were you earlier? Did you see who did this?" Ivan suppressed his growing anxiety and asked again.
"Ron and I were in the common room playing Wizards' Chess all afternoon. When we came in, we found the dormitory like this. We checked our stuff, nothing was missing, so we came out to look for you and Neville", Harry explained.
"Whoever it was, they went to a lot of trouble just to steal a useless notebook", Ron said, trying to calm the agitated Pettigrew in his pocket, sounding angry.
Ivan frowned. This was troublesome. He couldn’t think of who would want the Horcrux.
Apart from Pettigrew, there were no other witnesses. As Ivan was racking his brain, Maca flew to his shoulder and pecked his face, cooing, "Goo goo goo~"
"Maca? Right, I almost forgot. You must have seen it. I can ask you!" Ivan was initially stunned but then realized with joy that his Owl was also a witness.
